  • Uttara Kannada District- Introduction 2013
Uttara Kannada District- Introduction 2013 LAND USE CHANGES WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF DEVELOPMENTAL PROJECTS IN UTTARA KANNADA DISTRICT Summary: Forest ecosystems in Uttara Kannada district have witnessed major transformations during the post-independence. Uttara Kannada district has the distinction of having highest forest cover among all districts of Karnataka. Land use analysis using temporal remote sensing data reveal distressing trend of deforestation in the district, evident from the reduction of evergreen - semi evergreen forest cover from 67.73% (1973) to 32.08% (2013). Taluk-wise analyses reveal similar trend for evergreen - semi evergreen forest cover during 1973 to 2013; Ankola (75.66 to 55.33%), Bhatkal (61.37 to 30.38%), Honnavar (70.63 to 35.71%), Karwar (72.26 to 59.70%), Kumta (62.89 to 29.38%), Siddapur (71.42 to 23.68), Sirsi (64.89 to 16.78), Supa (93.56 to 58.55%), Yellapur (75.28 to 18.98%), Haliyal (35.45 to 2.59%), Mundgod (2063 to 1.52). Forest cover has declined from 81.75 (1973) to 60.98% (2013) in the coastal zone, 91.45 (1973) to 59.14% (2013) in the Sahyadrian interior, and 69.26 (1973) to 16.76% (2013) in plains zone. Implementation of developmental activities without taking into account the ecological significance of ecosystems, services provided by them in meeting the livelihood of local population has resulted in the degradation of forests. These changes in the landscape structure (through large scale land use changes) have altered functional abilities of an ecosystem evident from lowered hydrological yield, disappearing perennial streams, higher instances of human –animal conflicts, declined ecosystem goods, etc.

  • Devara Kaadus’ | Bengaluru News - Times of India
2/12/2019 Rapid urbanisation, change in style of worship threaten ‘devara kaadus’ | Bengaluru News - Times of India Rapid urbanisation, change in style of worship threaten ‘devara kaadus’ Shrinivasa M | TNN | Feb 11, 2019, 09:47 IST 2 Comments DIVINE ABODE: A place of worship in the Eechuru Bhagavati sacred grove in Kodagu district Fear of being cursed by the local deity ensured ‘devara kaadus’ (sacred groves) remained pristine for generations, but these groves increasingly face the threat of being destroyed. There are a sizeable number of sacred groves in districts along the Western Ghats like Shivamogga, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Uttara Kannada, but they are slowly being encroached. In Kodagu, a district rich in flora and fauna, about 2% of forests are considered sacred groves. Three taluks — Madikeri, Virajpet, and Somwarpet — account for a total of 2,500 acres of sacred groves. Forest department records show that an estimated 508 groves are in Virajpet taluk, while Somwarpet has 400 and Madikeri 306. They are known for their rich bio-diversity and flora. But urbanization and changes in style of worship threaten the very existence of these groves. Sacred groves, also known as kans, are part of day-to-day life and play an important role in the beliefs of local communities. Researchers estimate that as many as 120 deities are worshipped in kans across the district and 18 communities use them for worship. “Bhadra Kaali and Aiyyappa are the major deities,” said Poornima Seregar, a researcher from Kushalnagar, Madikeri. “In many places, even ‘Kutti Chata’ is worshipped. After the August 2018 floods and landslides, awareness of the importance of ‘devara kaadus’ has increased.” Devara kaadu utsav However, locals bemoan the steady loss of groves.

  • Yakshagana Natakwala Fakir Abstract the Present Paper Deals With
Yakshagana Natakwala Fakir Abstract The present paper deals with Yakshagana, a folk form of South India. The research is historical, exploratory and aesthetic in nature. It finds out the different significances of the idioms of the art form. Keywords: Yakshagana, Folk, Natyasastra, Theatre Introduction Yakshagana, like Kutiyattam and Kathakali, follows the Natyasastra tradition by evolving a theatrical technique which is harmonious balance among the four types of abhinaya (enacting): the Vacika, with the recitative sung verse and pure prose passages; the angika, having a well formulated system of stylized gaits(gatis)classified according to character or animal, bird or human situation and mood, and patterns and clusters of movement which are set to seven material circles of the talas; the aharya, with its elaborate and intricate costuming headgear and make up conventions; and the sattvika which sets the internal mood pervading the moral and the ethical tone of the dramatic piece. It has the element of Tandava and Lasya and follow the conventions of Natyadharmi in exits and entries and in the establishment of locale through its several choreographical patterns and floor designs. Theatre Street Journal Vol.2, No.1 27 March 2018 ISSN 2456-754X Page 68 After one has examined these structural and stylized features, there is little that is left in the Yakshaganaa which can be considered as pure folk, in the sense that it can be taken as untutored, unlearned and spontaneous. Kapila Vatsayan: Traditional Indian Theatre Multiple Stream. Significance of the form Yakshagana is a uniquely traditional form of dance theatre of the state of Karnataka, with a formidable classical background.

PRIORITIZING TRADITIONAL CONSERVATION PRACTICES FOR KARNATAKA Yogesh Gokhale*, Kushalappa C^, Bhat H. R*, Madhav Gadgil* Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560012, India Ph: 3600985 College of Forestry, Ponnampet, Kodagu 1.Current Status Karnataka has diversity of landscapes associated with biological and socio-cultural diversity. The physical geographical features have been largely responsible for the ecology and the cultural affinities of people with the biodiversity. The State can be broadly divided into 2 regions in terms of physical geography: Western Ghats and Eastern semi-arid plains. The secular and sacred cultural traditions linked with the biodiversity are more of a function of the physical geography of the region and the biodiversity supported by the geography and hence the climatic conditions. The Western Ghats is part of one of the megadiversity hot-spots in the world and harbour a range of cultural practices like sacred groves, sacred stretches of riverbeds, streambeds and tanks, sacred mangroves, sacred species of plants and animals. And historically it also supported totemism associated with the local people in the area. The Western Ghats consists of part of Uttara Kannada district, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. consists of the Uttara Kannada, Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Hassan and Kodagu districts. Locally the whole region comprising the West Coast and the Western Ghats is referred as Malnad. The sacred elements (SEs) in the Malnad region can be described as follows: The most common SE in this region is sacred grove (SG). But the SGs vary in terms of size, ownership patterns and also with respect to the vegetation.
