Selection of Cureton and Sanchez was made at the Board's 29th annual selection meeting held at Helms Hall recently. Mickey Cureton, who led coach Aaron Wade's Apaches to the Coast League title and into the "AAAA" playoff finals against Mater Dei, had a phenomenal year for a junior performer. In 13 games, Mickey carried the ball 154 times for 1,496 yards and 23 touchdowns. Averaging close to 10 yards per carry, Mickey scored fou r TDs in two games during th e y ear ag a in st Warren and S e rv ite . The l a t t e r game was the first round of the playoffs, which saw Centennial win 41-21. Before bowing to Mater Dei in the finals, 21-0, Centennial took the measure of El Rancho (21-19), and Redlands (25-7). Mickey's season scoring total was 140 points, as he scored two extra points. Pete Sanchez, named along with Mickey Cureton for 1965 grid honors, has no less glowing credentials. Pete guided coach Dick Coury's Mater Dei Monarchs to the Angelus League crown (8-0-1) and then to four straight "AAAA" Playoff wins over Ramona (20-12), Westminster (17-14), Pasadena (28-13) and Centennial (21-0). Coach Coury calls the 6'1", 205-pound QB "The best all-around QB we've bed since ’ John Huarte." Huarte, 1964 Heisman Trophy winner, was CIF P layer o f the Year in I960. Sanchez had a remarkable season in 1965 as he accounted for 1,568 yards in total offense on 662 yards rushing and 906 yards passing. Pete ran 125 times and scored 12 touchdowns. He completed 66 of 130 passes for 906 yards and nine TDs. In the final playoff game against Centennial, Sanchez gained 120 yards on 22 runs and scored twice. He passed 12 times, completing six for 93 yards. Both Sanchez and Cureton w ill be recipients of the Player of the Year Medal Award a t th e 29th annual A ll-Southern C alifo rn ia Board o f F ootball Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 15 at 10:30 a.m. All players, along with their coaches, w ill be on hand to receive the customary framed scroll awards presented annually by the Helms Board of selection. For having coached his team to the "AAAA" Division title , Dick Coury will be recipient of the traditional Silver Tumbler award recognizing him for his great coaching achievement. All players selected on the 1964 "AAAA" Division teams were seniors, so there are no repeaters on this year's squad. Twenty-seven Southern Section "AAAA" high schools are represented on this year's selections. This season marks the first time that the Helms Board has selected line backers on the honor teams. Two backers are named to each team. Unable to sep arate six outstanding backs on the third team, the Board elected to name an extra backfield performer this year. PAST C .I.F . The Department cunently has 36 formal agreements with LAUSD through Joint Use Agreements (JUA) and License Agreements. Finally, the board named Jim Murphy, center-linebacker of the AAAA champion Santa Barbara eleven, as the top performer in major CIF ranks this past year. The selection of Murphy marks only the second time in the history of the Helms selections that a lineman has been picked as "player of the year". San Diego High's Charlie Powell, an end, was the board's selection back in 1950. Coach Sam Cathcart, former Long Beach, Santa Barbara College and San Francisco 49ers gridiron performer, calls Murphy the finest football player we've had at Santa Barbara. This, of course, takes in performers like Peter Zucco, "player of the year" in 1940 and Ernie Zámpese, University of Southern California star, who was top CIF player pick in 1953.

THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER OUTSTANDING YEAR! How Many Jersey Numbers of Heisman Trophy Winners Can You Name? By John Shearer About four years ago, I wrote a story about the jersey numbers that the Heisman Trophy winners have worn. I decided to write the article after noticing that 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III of Baylor wore No. 10, and I began wondering which other Heisman Trophy winners wore that number. That started an online search, and I was able to find everyone’s number, or at least a number the player wore during part of his career. I wrote the story in chronological order by year and mentioned the jersey number with each player, but someone emailed me and said he would like to see a story if I ever listed the Heisman Trophy winners in numerical order. After I thought about it, an article written that way would make for a more The College Football Historian-2 - interesting story.
