Selection of Cureton and Sanchez was made at the Board's 29th annual selection meeting held at Helms Hall recently. Mickey Cureton, who led coach Aaron Wade's Apaches to the Coast League title and into the "AAAA" playoff finals against Mater Dei, had a phenomenal year for a junior performer. In 13 games, Mickey carried the ball 154 times for 1,496 yards and 23 touchdowns. Averaging close to 10 yards per carry, Mickey scored fou r TDs in two games during th e y ear ag a in st Warren and S e rv ite . The l a t t e r game was the first round of the playoffs, which saw Centennial win 41-21. Before bowing to Mater Dei in the finals, 21-0, Centennial took the measure of El Rancho (21-19), and Redlands (25-7). Mickey's season scoring total was 140 points, as he scored two extra points. Pete Sanchez, named along with Mickey Cureton for 1965 grid honors, has no less glowing credentials. Pete guided coach Dick Coury's Mater Dei Monarchs to the Angelus League crown (8-0-1) and then to four straight "AAAA" Playoff wins over Ramona (20-12), Westminster (17-14), Pasadena (28-13) and Centennial (21-0). Coach Coury calls the 6'1", 205-pound QB "The best all-around QB we've bed since ’ John Huarte." Huarte, 1964 winner, was CIF P layer o f the Year in I960. Sanchez had a remarkable season in 1965 as he accounted for 1,568 yards in total offense on 662 yards rushing and 906 yards passing. Pete ran 125 times and scored 12 touchdowns. He completed 66 of 130 passes for 906 yards and nine TDs. In the final playoff game against Centennial, Sanchez gained 120 yards on 22 runs and scored twice. He passed 12 times, completing six for 93 yards. Both Sanchez and Cureton w ill be recipients of the Player of the Year Medal Award a t th e 29th annual A ll-Southern C alifo rn ia Board o f F ootball Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 15 at 10:30 a.m. All players, along with their coaches, w ill be on hand to receive the customary framed scroll awards presented annually by the Helms Board of selection. For having coached his team to the "AAAA" Division title , Dick Coury will be recipient of the traditional Silver Tumbler award recognizing him for his great coaching achievement. All players selected on the 1964 "AAAA" Division teams were seniors, so there are no repeaters on this year's squad. Twenty-seven Southern Section "AAAA" high schools are represented on this year's selections. This season marks the first time that the Helms Board has selected line backers on the honor teams. Two backers are named to each team. Unable to sep arate six outstanding backs on the third team, the Board elected to name an extra backfield performer this year. PAST C .I.F . As was the case last year, the Helms Board selected three Southern Section divisional teams — "AAAA", "AAA-AA" and "A-Small Schools" — at its 1965 meeting, adding in each division linebackers to the selections for the first time. In the "AAA-AA" Division the Board of selection, composed of southland prep journalists from throughout Southern California, named Crespi High School's great halfback Brian Porter as Player of the Year. Porter amassed a total offense of 1,555 yards in 12 games, rushing for 1,129 yards, passing for 43 and receiving 17 throws for 383 yards. Porter scored 19 TDs and kicked four PATs for a total of 119 points. Crespi was runner-up to West Covina in the "AAA" Championships, _ In the "A-Small School" Division selections, Jerry Moore, fullback for California School for the Deaf and fullback Gil Gonzales of Santa Clara's "A" Title team, were named co-Players of the Year. Gonzales carried the ball 154 times for 662 yards and eight touchdowns. Gil was a 48-minute player for coach Lou Cvijanovich, whose team won the Tri-Valley League title and defeated South Hills (14-9), Carpinteria (26-6) and Hemet (17-14) in the "A" Division playoffs to win CIF laurels. Fullback Jerry Moore has been outstanding for C.S.F.D. for four years. This past season, the big powerhouse carried for 1,127 yards and 18 TDs and added 302 yards passing, connecting on 11 of 19 aerials for four TDs, Moore averaged OV6r¿17n yarc^s Per baU game this year, eight yards per carry and scored a total of 162 points. Over four years, Jerry rushed for 3,630 yards in 25 games and ac counted for 53 touchdowns. AND CHARLES EVANS (GARDENA) NAMED TRI-PLAYERS OF YEAR IN LOS ANGELES CITY f o o t b a l l FOR 65 SEASON FOR RETEASE: TUESDAY AFTERNOON, DECEMBER 28 and Wednesday a.m. * # * DO NOT RELEASE PRIOR TO DEC. 28 p*m.______F o r the first time in the 29-year history of All-Los Angeles City Board of Football, tri-players of the year have been selected for honors in the Los Angeles City Section of the California Interscholastic Federation. Two f in e W nem m from Coach Jim Pendleton's city champion los Angeles Romans and a 200- pound fullback from Gardena's Marine League champion Mohicans are the players named. It has been no secret during the 1965 city grid campaign, that coach Jim Pendleton's juggernaut rolled on the "wheels" of a fine, mobile line. And when player of the year ballots were counted, coach Pendleton's appraisal of his squad saw Reggie Lowe and Mike Ballou a tandem pick. It was also the opinion of the^ board, that Gardena's junior fullback Charles Evans, the city's top scorer with 155 points on 20 touchdowns and 35 conversions, could not be overlooked for sim ilar honors. _ So, for the first time in 29 years, three outstanding Los Angeles City football players will be honored as athletes of the Year. The honored stars will be recipients of Helms Medallion awards, which they w ill receive at the 29th annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 22nd at 10:30 a.m. All players named for honors on the three city teams w ill receive, as they have for the past 28 years, framed scroll awards recognizing them for their efforts on the gridiron over the past season. Another "first" for the Los Angeles City Board was the selection of two linebackers on each of the teams. It was felt that the defense should come in for special attention and that in honoring six linebackers the spotlight would be thrown on this vital part of the game. Also, the prep journalists who comprise the board of selection decided to recognize several fine place-kickers on this year's All-City selections. Therefore each of the three teams has a kicking star as part of its makeup. It was the Board's feeling that several boys, who might not otherwise be honored, should receive recognition for their special talents. As expected, City Champion placed more players on the honor teams than any other school. The Romans — L.A. compiled a perfect 1 1 - 0 record for 1965, defeating Verdugo Hills (42-7), Taft (21-0) and Westchester (27- 7 ) — averaged 30 points per ball game over the "official" season, counting five regular-season games and three in the playoffs. Coach Pendleton's devastating crew held its average in the three playoff encounters, averaging an even 30 digits. Only two players appear on this year's teams who were honored in 1964. The Romans' speedy halfback Charles Moch repeats as a first-team selection and Gardena's Tenny Warren moves up from last season's second squad. Two juniors are listed on this year's first team — Gardena's Charles Evans and L.A. High's kicking special ist Gil Ledezma. The second squad is composed completely of seniors, while Univer sity's Ernie Brazier (end) and Poly's Mike Saade (guard) are juniors on the third team . As is the custom of the Los Angeles City Board of'Football, Coach Jim Pendleton w ill be recipient of a silver tumbler award at the January 22nd Awards Program, for having directed his team to the Los Angeles City grid title in 1965. This season, with several of these * 6I4. stars on his squad, Jim Pendleton coached h i 3 charges to five straight wins in league play and lopsided wins over Verdugo Hills(l|.2-7) and Taft(21-0) in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The Romans met W estchester, Western Loop kingpin, in the City Championship game last Saturday. Behind Los Angeles in the standings for 1965 came Fremont (k-1), Manual Arts (3-2), Dorsey (2-3)* Jefferson (I-I4.) and Washington (0-5). Next to Gardena, L.A. scored more points than any other city school this year XIj.6 and had less points scored against it with 32. This fine defensive record for Los Angeles is reflected in the fact that a pair of Reman linemen — Reggie Lowe and Mike Ballou — were selected as co-players of the year in the Southern League for 1965. Coach Pendleton makes no bones about their ability. "These boys are the best offensive and defensive linemen in the city"l For the first time in 1965» linebackers were selected on the a ll league teams. Also, the Helms Board is honoring a place-kicker for the first time. Repeaters on the league team are as indicated above. PHIL PAULSON WESTCHESTER 5-9 160 Senior * 1 st Team '64 ** 2nd Team '64 ® New Position filled in '65 Coach B ill Young's W estchester Comets, who marched through all Western League opposition in 1965 and posted a perfect 6-0 record in League play, placed six performers on the first all-league team in cluding halfback player of the year Gregg Mimm as members of the Helms All-Los Angeles City Board of Football met to name its annual grid te a m s . Mimm, another scholar-athlete who boasts a 3»Í4- grade average, scored 60 points in W estchester's grid engagements this year and led the Comets through the playoffs -- 7-6 over Grant and 20-11; over Gar dena — to the finals, where they met Los Angeles last Saturday. Young was high in his praise of Mimm, calling him "Our best all- around player." And for a team which reaches the finals in Los Angeles football, this is some statement. Coach Young also had accolades for his star guard Jim Paxton, whom he calls "The top lineman in the city this year." Behind W estchester in the Western League standings came Palisades (t;-2), University (3-2-1), Hollywood (3-2-1), Venice (2-1;) and Fair fax and Hamilton with 1-5 marks. Venice won the 1961; Western Loop crown with a 5-0-1 record, as 1965 champion W estchester was right be hind with a 5 - 1 - 0 . All-Southern California Board of A thletics, of which the Los Angeles City selection board is a part, has made Southern California football team selections since 1937. With representatives of Southern C alifom ia newspapers serving as the selections committee and Helm 3 A thletic Foundation as the coordinating agency, thousands of deserv ing athletes have been honored since the first selections were made in 1936. All players named for honors receive scroll awards recog nizing them for their outstanding achivement in athletics.
