X wenty-six Southern high schools, which help make up the large schools (AAAA-AAA) section of the C.I.F., are represented on this year's All-Southem California Large Schools Football Team for the I960 season,, The Helms All-Southem California Board of Athletics, composed of sports journal ists from Santa Barbara to San Diego, select the All-Southem California High School football teams, and have done so since the board's inception back in 1937o There was much discussion among board members before an All-Southem California prep school "player of the year" was selected. Finally, the board named Jim Murphy, center-linebacker of the AAAA champion Santa Barbara eleven, as the top performer in major CIF ranks this past year. The selection of Murphy marks only the second time in the history of the Helms selections that a lineman has been picked as "player of the year". San Diego High's Charlie Powell, an end, was the board's selection back in 1950. Coach Sam Cathcart, former Long Beach, Santa Barbara College and 49ers gridiron performer, calls Murphy the finest football player we've had at Santa Barbara. This, of course, takes in performers like Peter Zucco, "player of the year" in 1940 and Ernie Zámpese, University of star, who was top CIF player pick in 1953. Murphy, not an imposing physical speciman at 5'10" and 175-pounds, is described as a "terror" on the field. To li3t Murphy over such a proven star as Marv Goux, who went on to star at USC, shows what Santa Barbarans think of Jim Murphy. Jim served as team captain in I960 and led the Dons to the AAAA Championship of the CIF, with a 19-6 win over Centennial in the finals. Jim Murphy will receive his "player of the year" medal award at the 24th annual All-Southem California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 14, at 10:30 a.m. All players named for All-Star team honors, both large and small CIF as well as City section selec tions, will be presented with framed scroll awards from All-Southem California Board of Athletics. Murphy will also have his name engraved upon the Paul H. Helms Trophy, which is permanently lodged in Helms Hall, Los Angeles. As might be suspected, Santa Barbara led the parade in placing men on the honor teams. Rod Dowhower, 6'2", 210-pound senior who operated Sam Cathcart's offense to perfection, was named in the backfield on the first team, vdúle end Gary Hart made the third squad. Eight schools, including runner-up Cen tennial, placed two players on the teams. Escondido, San Diego area champion, placed its fine quarterback Doug Ben nett on the first team. He completed 98 of 155 passes for 1,577 yards and 17 TDs during an 11 game season. Centennial's QB Larry Todd, top performer for Aaron Wade's Coast League champions made the first eleven, as did Long Beach Wilson's Bob Bailey, who amassed 1,003 total yards in eight games. Riverside's fullback Bob Horacek, fine all-around performer, made the top eleven, also. All players named to this season's first team are seniors. Two players from last year's All-CIF teams are back this year. Ron Gold man, Monrovia guard on the second team in 1959, was picked on the first team this season. Warren Jackson of Santa Ana, a second-team back in '59, repeated in his position this fall. Along with the top players of I960, CIF championship coaches will receive special awards. Sam Cathcart (Santa Barbara), Robert Embrey (Escondido), Ernie Johnson (El Rancho) and those small CIF high school coaches who won titles, will, be remembered with awards. PAST C.I.F. 11-Southern California Board of Athletics, unable to separate the accomp lishments of two southland , selected both John Huarte and Gary Holman as the outstanding players among Southern California small schools football performers for I960, Twenty-six high schools from the double and single A divisions of the CIF, along with the small school division, are rep resented on this season's All-Southern California "small schools" teams. Co-players of the year, Gary Holman (Brea-Olinda) and John Huarte (Mater Dei) were on the CIF small schools team in 1959. Holman was a first team selec tion, while Huarte was named to the second team, John Huarte, who led Dick Coury's Mater Dei eleven to the AA division title with a 32-0 win over Santa Ana Valley, has been a standout performer for three seasons. An outstanding quarterback, Huarte passed for 16 TDs, completing 87 of 130 for a .634 average and 1,439 yards. He carried the ball himself 55 times and gained 375 yards, for a seven-yard average. A good place-kicker and punter, John made 29 of 37 placements and had a 40-yard punting average. In the title game against Santa Ana Valley, he completed 11 of 13 passes for 164 yards and four TDs, Dick Coury calls John "the greatest high school quarterback in the country". Brea-Olinda was defeated 20-14 by Mary Star in the semi-finals of the A division playoffs. Both John Huarte and Gary Holman will receive their co-player of the year awards at the 24th annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall in Los Angeles on Saturday morning, January 14, at 10:30 a.m. At this time all those boys who have been named for All-Southern California Football Team honors, both on large and small schools teams, will be presented with their scroll awards. Williamson and Mattera were on the second team last season, while Litzinger was named to the third squad in '59. Mary Star of the Sea placed its fine fullback, Vincent Mattera (6'2 and 215 pounds) on the first team. He was a unanimous selection as player of the league. Another outstanding performer in the Parochial league and a first-team selection is Tom Crandall, St. Francis High's fine halfback. He gained over 1,000 yards and has been a top performer for three years. Don Johnson, South Pasadena's fine fullback, is back again on the first team, the 6', 180-pounder averaged nine yards per carry on 94 attempts in 1$0 and scored 72 points. ^ Other top backs to be named to the team are Willie Hunter (Needles), who gained 1,183 yards from scrimmage, averaging 10 yards per carry; Allan Curr, half back from Culver City, who scored 73 points for the season; Pat Daily, Santa Ynez halfback and the Tri-Valley League's top scorer with 91 points; San Luis Obispo's Tony Boyle, whe gained over 800 yards this season while leading his team to the A division crown; Gil Lewis, who has quarterbacked Charter Oak to a 25-4 won-lost mark over past 3 years and was team's co-captain this year scoring 67 points; and Beaumont's Roger Conley, who quarterbacked the DeAnza League champs, scoring 109 points. . P '^-th a 57-26 win over Los Angeles High School. Banning High placed three players on this year's edition of the All-Los Angeles City Football Team, including "Player of the Year" selection Richard Daniel Espalin. The 5 :7", 160-pound senior tailbaci: received no opposition as the city's top gridiron performer for I960, as members of All-Southern California Board of Football met at Helms Hall to make their I960 all-league and all-city selections. This marked the 24th year that Helms Hall's prep board of athletics has selected the official All-Los Angeles City Football Team. . Twenty-one Los Angeles City High Schools are represented on this year's three squads, composed of 12 players each. There was little time consumed in balloting for the I960 player of the year. Danny Espalin was a unanimous choice and the senior tailback from Banning certainly demonstrated his greatness in the city finals, when he netted 116 yards in 12 carries for three TDs, passed for two more, while personally accounting for 30 of his team's 57 points. With the Romans scoring 26, the combined total of 83 points was a city play-off record. Over the season Danny Espalin completed 47 of 94 passes for 821 yards and 13 touchdowns. He carried the ball 94 times for 767 yards, 12 touchdowns and an 8.2 average. His total offense mark was 1,588 yards. Co-coaches Paul Huebner and Gene Vollnogle, who have directed the Pilots to a remarkable 38-4 won-lost record over the past four seasons, speak in glowing terms of their fire cracker tailback. Danny was one of three captains directing the Banning team this year and was as fine a runner as seen anywhere in city ranks. Danny Espalin will receive his Los Angeles City "Player of the Year" award at the 24th Annual All-Southem California Board of Football Awards Program, to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 14 at 10:30 am. All-Los Angeles City players, along with those selected to the All-Southem California High School teams will receive their I960 scroll awards at this time. Five schools placed three I960 gridiron stars on the honor teams. Champion Banning, runner-up Los Angeles, West Valley League runner-up Birmingham, Eastern League champion Roosevelt and Western titlist, Hollywood. Just one player, Chuck Markham of Birmingham, is back from last year's teams. He was a second-team pick in 1959. Eight league "Player of the Year" selections were named to either the first or second teams. Van Nuys' Jim Honberger, East-Valley League top selection, was a first team pick, as was Raymond Chavez, Roosevelt's co-captain and halfback. Olvin Moreland, who scored 80 points for the Romans of L.A, High during the season, was named to the first team and also Thomas Lupo, top player in the West Valley loop for '60. Dick Cummins and George Powell, co-players of the year in the Western league, were named to the second team, as was Owen Tansey, Eagle Rock fullback from the Northern circuit. Helms All-Southem California Board of Football's "Player of the Year" selections follow below. These selections have been made since 1937 and each play er's name is engraved upon the Paul H. Banning High School, Marine League Champions for I960, and one of the strong est teams in the school's histoi’jr, placed four players on the All-Marine League team as members of the Helms All-Southern California Board of Athletics met at Helms Hall to make their annual gridiron selections. Placing two linemen — end Jim Arens and tackle Richard Reed — and two backs — Danny Espalin and Charles Jackson — on the first team, Banning also placed four players on the second team, Paul Huebner and Gene Vollnogle, co-coaches of the all-powerful Pilots over a period of the past four years, speak in glowing terms of their star tailback, Danny Espalin, who was a unanimous selection as league player of the year. Danny was one of three captains of the Banning team during I960 and was most adept in the running department. The 5'7, 160-pound scatback scored 54 points during the full season and 42 points during league play. This marked the fourth year in a row that Banning has won the Marine League title. The Pilots wound up the season with a 4-0 in league play and were strong contenders for the Los Angeles City grid championship. Behind Banning in the league standings came San Pedro (3-1), Jordan (1-1-2), Gardena (l-3-l) and Nar- bonne (O-3-l). The Pilots had one of the finest defensive records in the city in I960, allowing but 37 points to be scored on them, while accounting for 115 points. Only three lower classmen were named on this year's All-Marine League team. Winston Tucker's Van Nuys eleven, the highest scoring team in Los Angeles City football ranks this season and the Wast Valley League champion, placed six players on the I960 All-Southern California Board of Athletics first team, as annual selec tions were made at Helms Hall last week. Boasting the finest offensive and defen sive record (points scored) in city play, Van Nuys was headed on the All-East Valley team by fullback Jim Honberger, who was selected as player of the year. Honberger, who gathered in ninety percent of the opposing coaches player of the year votes, performed at fullback for Coach Tucker at Van Nuys, scoring 96 points during the season. He is described by his coach as "big and fast and a hard runner, with a good attitude." Along with Hornberger, Van Nuys placed linemen Bill Bloodgood, Art Hand, Barry Antis and Gary Lantz on the top eleven, along with its smooth quarterback, Jim Knapp. Halfback Mike McDonnell made the second team. Orlie Schmidt's San Fernando team placed three performers on the first squad, as it wound up in a tie for second in league play with a 3-2 won-lost mark. Tackle Bob Wittenberg and backs Gary Bayne and Bobby Mitchell were the San Fernando team members to be selected. There were five players who repeated from last year's All-East Valley team. Player of the year Jim Hornberger was again named to the first team, as was Grant's Steve Kovner. Jim Knapp, second team end choice last year moved to a first team back spot in '60, whileBob Dietrich dropped from first to second team. North Hollywood's Don McCall repeated his second team tackle selection. For having been named as the top performer in the East Valley League for I960, Jim Honberger will receive a special medal award at the 24th annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards program at Helms Hall on the morning of January 14, 1961 at 10:30 am. Louis Bimbaum's Sheiks from fashioned a perfect 5-0 season and placed six players on the All-Western League first team as All-Southern California Board of Football members cast their annual grid ballots at Helms Hall last week. It was impossible for board members to separate the achievements of two stalwart Hollywood players — quarterback George Powell and center Dick Cummin — so they were named co-players of the year in Western loop play. Powell, a 6', 175-pound "A" student, is an outstanding ball handler, passer and runner, in the opinion of his coach. Dick Cummins, 5'10, 180-pound offensive center and linebacker, performed nobly as a blocker and was all over the field on defense. For having been named as co-players of their league, George Powell and Dick Cummins will both receive player of the year medal awards at the 24th annual All-Southern California Board of Football awards program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 14, at 10:30 am. Five of last year's All-Western League players are on this season's squads. Dick Crotsley, Westchester's fine end, is the only first-team repeater from '59, with Erik Whitaker and Rod Lipscomb moving up to the first team from last year's second squad. Bill B u m s and Jon Kinsey were both named to the second team in 1959 as in I960. This year's All-Western League first team is composed entirely of seniors. Only one junior was named to the second team, tackle John Hall of Hollywood. With Hollywood winning the league title (5—0), Westchester placed second (4-1), Hamilton (3-2), Venice (2-3), University (1-4) and Fairfax (0-5). The Sheiks also won the Western crown in 1959, with a perfect 5-0 mark. All-League players will receive scroll awards from All-Southem Ca"! if on: Ia Board of Football, as they have over past years. These awards will be preserv'd to the players by their coaches at the high schools. All-Southem California Board of Athletics has been sponsored by Helms Ath letic Foundation since 1937. Ever since that time, medals and scrolls have been presented to high school athletes, as selected by the board. High School Hall of Fame chambers are maintained at Helms Hall, Los Angeles.

Spots on the all-league team were very well distributed, with co-champ Verdugo Hills placing two performers, Lincoln. Marshall and Belmont all two each and Franklin one. Eagle Rock's senior fullback, Owen Tansey, was the board's choice as Northern League player of the year. Described by his coach, Joe Kelly, as "the hardest running back we've ever had at Eagle Rock", Tansey carried 72 times during the season for a 6.1 average. At 5'10 and 180 pounds, Tansey shown brightly in several, league ball games and possessed a great attitude for the co-champs. ^ For having been selected the league's outstanding performer for i960, Tansey will receive a special Helms medal award at the 24th annual All-Southern California Board of Football program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 1 4 . at 10:30 am. Tansey will be presented his medal along with other all-league play ers of the year. _ Five players were again selected on the all—league team, as they were in I95■ Jim Brennen of Verdugo Hills and Hudson Houck of Eagle Rook are on the first team' for the second time, while Wayne Healy of Marshall and Mike Masterman of Franklin move up from last season's second team.
