Finally, the board named Jim Murphy, center-linebacker of the AAAA champion Santa Barbara eleven, as the top performer in major CIF ranks this past year. The selection of Murphy marks only the second time in the history of the Helms selections that a lineman has been picked as "player of the year". San Diego High's Charlie Powell, an end, was the board's selection back in 1950. Coach Sam Cathcart, former Long Beach, Santa Barbara College and San Francisco 49ers gridiron performer, calls Murphy the finest football player we've had at Santa Barbara. This, of course, takes in performers like Peter Zucco, "player of the year" in 1940 and Ernie Zámpese, University of Southern California star, who was top CIF player pick in 1953. Murphy, not an imposing physical speciman at 5'10" and 175-pounds, is described as a "terror" on the field. To li3t Murphy over such a proven star as Marv Goux, who went on to star at USC, shows what Santa Barbarans think of Jim Murphy. Jim served as team captain in I960 and led the Dons to the AAAA Championship of the CIF, with a 19-6 win over Centennial in the finals. Jim Murphy will receive his "player of the year" medal award at the 24th annual All-Southem California Board of Football Awards Program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 14, at 10:30 a.m. All players named for All-Star team honors, both large and small CIF as well as Los Angeles City section selec tions, will be presented with framed scroll awards from All-Southem California Board of Athletics. Murphy will also have his name engraved upon the Paul H. Helms Trophy, which is permanently lodged in Helms Hall, Los Angeles. As might be suspected, Santa Barbara led the parade in placing men on the honor teams. Rod Dowhower, 6'2", 210-pound senior quarterback who operated Sam Cathcart's offense to perfection, was named in the backfield on the first team, vdúle end Gary Hart made the third squad. Eight schools, including runner-up Cen tennial, placed two players on the teams. Escondido, San Diego area champion, placed its fine quarterback Doug Ben nett on the first team. He completed 98 of 155 passes for 1,577 yards and 17 TDs during an 11 game season. Centennial's QB Larry Todd, top performer for Aaron Wade's Coast League champions made the first eleven, as did Long Beach Wilson's Bob Bailey, who amassed 1,003 total yards in eight games. Riverside's fullback Bob Horacek, fine all-around performer, made the top eleven, also. All players named to this season's first team are seniors. Two players from last year's All-CIF teams are back this year. Ron Gold man, Monrovia guard on the second team in 1959, was picked on the first team this season. Warren Jackson of Santa Ana, a second-team back in '59, repeated in his position this fall. Along with the top players of I960, CIF championship coaches will receive special awards. Sam Cathcart (Santa Barbara), Robert Embrey (Escondido), Ernie Johnson (El Rancho) and those small CIF high school coaches who won titles, will, be remembered with awards. PAST C.I.F. CALIEDRNIA------------------ ALL-SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL F00T- SMALL SCHOOLS 11-Southern California Board of Athletics, unable to separate the accomp lishments of two southland quarterbacks, selected both John Huarte and Gary Holman as the outstanding players among Southern California small schools football performers for I960, Twenty-six high schools from the double and single A divisions of the CIF, along with the small school division, are rep resented on this season's All-Southern California "small schools" teams.
