Lid, Legislative Assistant COUNCIL FILE NO. 10-1076: SURVEY FINDINGS FROM SCHOOL-PARKS SHARED USE STUDY The Department of Recreation and Parks (Depaliment) began its shared use relationship with Los Angeles Unified School District (LA US D) in 1967 with an agreement for the construction and operation of a pool at Venice High SchooL The pool was subsequently built by the City on LAUSD property. The Department cunently has 36 formal agreements with LAUSD through Joint Use Agreements (JUA) and License Agreements. An additional 199 school or park sites have a shared use relationship through a permit or an informal reciprocal agreement. Use fees have historically not been collected from or paid to LAUSD under these arrangements_ However, recent discussions with LAUSD have indicated that this may change in the future, as LA USD is considering a policy change that would impose use fees on the Department for use of non JUA related school sites. , Besides LAUSD schools, the Depmtment also has working relationships with private schools and independent · chmter schools not under LAUSD. -

CREDENTIAL corporation, was established nine years ago under the POSITIONS leadership of Dr. Judith Perez, AALA’s immediate past president. Its mission is to support the association in awarding scholarships to LAUSD graduates and giving recognition to individuals or organizations for their generous volunteer service. This year, thanks to our outstanding sponsors and corporate supporters (click HERE), our fantastic Friends of AALA Board, our active and alumni members, and other friends we were able to award 30 scholarships to deserving LAUSD students. The banquet was a memorable affair with two Board Members, former and current District superintendents and senior staff, corporate sponsors, staff, parents, and community members in attendance. Finally, the board named Jim Murphy, center-linebacker of the AAAA champion Santa Barbara eleven, as the top performer in major CIF ranks this past year. The selection of Murphy marks only the second time in the history of the Helms selections that a lineman has been picked as "player of the year". San Diego High's Charlie Powell, an end, was the board's selection back in 1950. Coach Sam Cathcart, former Long Beach, Santa Barbara College and San Francisco 49ers gridiron performer, calls Murphy the finest football player we've had at Santa Barbara. This, of course, takes in performers like Peter Zucco, "player of the year" in 1940 and Ernie Zámpese, University of Southern California star, who was top CIF player pick in 1953. -

By Howard Blume and Mitchell Landsberg Los Angeles Times Staff Writers May 10, 2008 A fight between rival groups of black and Latino students at Locke High School quickly escalated into a campus-wide melee Friday, with as many as 600 students brawling until police restored calm with billy clubs. The troubled campus in South Los Angeles was locked down after the fight broke out at 12:55 p.m., as students returned from lunch to their fifth-period classes. Overwhelmed school officials called Los Angeles police for help, but students and faculty said it took about half an hour before dozens of officers, many in riot gear, restored order. "The kids were crazy, running from place to place, jumping on other kids," said Reggie Smith, the school's band director, who said he ran to pull his students from the melee. "Some of my kids were crying because they were walking to class with friends and they got jumped." Los Angeles Unified School District police said that there are only two officers assigned to Locke but that the school police force brought in about 60 officers after receiving word of the brawl. -

October 17, 2016 Dear Members of the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education, We are writing to you on behalf of the Los Angeles Advocacy Council, a 17-member committee of charter public school leaders and the broader community of 64 charter organizations listed below, representing 196 public schools serving 94,595 students in Los Angeles. We are proud to partner with the District in our shared effort to strengthen learning for all students. We are proud of our academic results, which have made us perhaps the highest performing charter community in the country, particularly with high-need students. We are proud that these results were achieved with both charter schools and District officials remaining committed to strengthening our working relationship, even through difficult times. Given how far we’ve come together, it is distressing and quite simply unacceptable that District staff have taken unexpected and unprecedented steps to close some of our higher performing academic schools and prevent others from continuing to serve the students who already rely on them. We are deeply concerned that this month District staff have recommended more charter renewal and material revision denials than they have in the last five years combined, none of which are based on student outcomes. The Board’s votes on Tuesday have the potential to disrupt the lives of over 13,000 students attending schools operated by our peers. The October staff recommendations represent a fundamental and drastic departure from the Charter School Division’s expressed values of consistency and transparency, and the District’s historic focus on student outcomes as an authorizer. -

INTEROFFICE CORRESPONDENCE Los Angeles Unified School District Student Health and Human Services INFORMATIVE TO: Members, Board of Education DATE: July 31, 2018 Austin Beutner, Superintendent FROM: Rowena Lagrosa, Interim Executive Director Student Health and Human Services SUBJECT: UPDATE ON IMPLEMENTATION PLAN TO ADDRESS, PREVENT, AND ELIMINATE COMMERCIAL SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN IN LAUSD The purpose of this correspondence is to provide an update on the implementation of the District’s efforts to eliminate Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) as prescribed in Board Resolution (Res-026-15/16) Not in Our Schools, Not in Our Communities: Address, Prevent, and Eliminate Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The following provide’s updated information on the implementation: That the Governing Board of the Los Angeles Unified School District stands in solidarity with all local agencies working to eliminate and address the CSEC crisis that exists in Los Angeles County (resolve); The primary charge of the CSEC taskforce was to build a strong collaborative relationship with critical stakeholders as the District developed and implemented its CSEC plan (Attachment A). As part of these efforts, the District’s CSEC taskforce now has established on-going meetings that take place two to three times per year with critical stakeholders. That the Los Angeles Unified School District will infuse CSEC awareness prevention and intervention into all applicable District units, policies and trainings, such as the biannual mandatory child abuse trainings, and incorporate the District’s CSEC response and intervention plan into the Los Angeles County CSEC Plan by the 2016-17 school year (resolve); The updated Child Abuse and Awareness Policy, BUL-1347-3, Section III D 4, published on August 19, 2016, now includes commercial sexual exploitation as a type of child abuse and the Board Resolution as a resource material. -
