    PE1591/M Scottish Ambulance Service Letter of 28 October 2016 The Scottish Ambulance Service continues to work closely with NHS Highland has been involved in meetings and the consultation regarding the redesign of Health and Social Care in the Skye, Lochalsh and South West Ross area. The Service attended a number of meetings across the area along with NHS Highland to help build public understanding about how our services fit within the integrated health and social care system and to answer any specific questions from community members about our role in the proposed changes to Health Care Services in this area. In recent years, ambulance staff establishment has increased across Skye: from five to six in Portree, four to five in Dunvegan, and we are recruiting in Broadford to take the establishment from six to nine. We have slightly increased our levels of cover in Portree and Broadford. In addition, we developed two Community First Responder schemes in Waternish and Glendale. We have also put an ambulance on to Raasay, which can be utilised by nominated local people on the island. Moreover, we have developed a system to for Paramedics access to Raasay with help from the Portree Lifeboat. These Paramedics can then use the ambulance that has been put on to the island. This is mainly used Out of Hours as an option in place of the ferry. We do still also have our air ambulance resources as a further option for responding to patients, depending on their clinical need. The skills level of our staff has also been improved with more Paramedics on the ambulances than before.

    3 S. S. N. S. Norse and Gaelic Coastal Terminology in the Western Isles It is probably true to say that the most enduring aspect of Norse place-names in the Hebrides, if we expect settlement names, has been the toponymy of the sea coast. This is perhaps not surprising, when we consider the importance of the sea and the seashore in the economy of the islands throughout history. The interplay of agriculture and fishing has contributed in no small measure to the great variety of toponymic terms which are to be found in the islands. Moreover, the broken nature of the island coasts, and the variety of scenery which they afford, have ensured the survival of a great number of coastal terms, both in Gaelic and Norse. The purpose of this paper, then, is to examine these terms with a Norse content in the hope of assessing the importance of the two languages in the various islands concerned. The distribution of Norse names in the Hebrides has already attracted scholars like Oftedal and Nicolaisen, who have concen­ trated on establis'hed settlement names, such as the village names of Lewis (OftedaI1954) and the major Norse settlement elements (Nicolaisen, S.H.R. 1969). These studies, however, have limited themselves to settlement names, although both would recognise that the less important names also merit study in an intensive way. The field-work done by the Scottish Place Name Survey, and localised studies like those done by MacAulay (TGSI, 1972) have gone some way to rectifying this omission, but the amount of material available is enormous, and it may be some years yet before it is assembled in a form which can be of use to scholar­ ship.

    Unish, Isle of Skye, Inverness-shire Unish Isle of Skye, Inverness-shire A spectacular coastal block of grazing land together with the remains of Unish house (derelict). Portree 26 miles, Inverness 135 miles, Inverness Airport 143 miles Unish (About 424 acres). • Expansive coastline measuring approximately 3 miles. • Grade 42 and 52 grazing land. • Derelict Unish House (dates from 1600’s) may have potential for re-development (subject to planning). About 424.07 acres (171.64 ha) in total. For sale as a whole. Situation Unish is located at the North West tip of the Waternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. The Waternish Peninsula is approximately 8 miles long and is situated between Loch Dunvegan and Loch Snizort in the North West of the island. The peninsula contains the hamlets of Stein and Lusta in Loch Bay to the South East and Halistra, Hallin and Trumpan further north. The main settlement on the Isle of Skye is Portree (25 miles) and provides a wide range of retail, leisure and commercial facilities. The population is currently around 1,000 and the town is the location of the only secondary school on the island. Inverness, the capital city of the Highlands, lies approximately 135 miles to the east. Inverness has a full range of retail, educational, leisure and commerce facilities together with a mainline railway station and an airport with flights to a wide range of UK destinations (including London Heathrow) and a limited number of European destinations (including Amsterdam). The Property The land at Unish is reached from the road end at Trumpan and comprises a spectacular block of land with sweeping views to the Outer Hebrides and bounded by majestic cliffs.

    Mint Croft, 31 Geary, Waternish, Isle of Skye, IV55 8GQ Travel Directions Travel by Car Mint Croft is about one and a half hours drive from the Skye Bridge. The journey from Edinburgh or Glasgow is about six hours, Aberdeen is approximately five hours. From Inverness the journey time is about three and a half hours. Directions from the Skye Bridge Take the A87 to Broadford and then onto Portree. At Portree follow the A87 towards Uig, after approximately 3 miles turn left on to the A850 towards Dunvegan. Follow the A850 for 18 miles and then turn right onto the B886 Waternish (Geary) road. Continue straight for 4 miles. At the T-junction turn right, go up the hill and continue on past Skyeskyns until you come to a sign for Geary. At the sign for Geary take a right, drive past the school on the left, over the cattle grid and almost to the end of the road. Mint Croft is on the left hand side of the road, look out for the MINT CROFT sign. Directions from Armadale, the Mallaig ferry terminal at Sleat. At Armadale take the A851 to Broadford, after 16 miles turn left on to the A87 and continue through Broadford to Portree. At Portree follow the A87 towards Uig, after approximately 3 miles turn left on to the A850 towards Dunvegan. Follow the A850 for 18 miles and then turn right onto the B886 Waternish (Geary) road. Continue straight for 4 miles, at the T-junction turn right, go up the hill and continue on past Skyeskyns until you come to a sign for Geary.

Robert Forbes’s manuscripts called – “The Lyon In Mourning” Noni Brown Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia Last updated Wednesday, September 11, 2013 PREFACE Before 1788, Australia was populated by at least 300,000 aborigines. (A guess as no one could have known actual figures). These nomadic people had inhabited the world's oldest continent for more than 10,000 years. They had seen very few Europeans, but two events were to play an important part in changing their way of life forever. Captain James Cook discovered the east coast of New Holland in 1770 and named it New South Wales. He sailed the whole of the coast and reported to the British government that he thought it would make a good place for a settlement. Britain did not recognise the country as being inhabited as the natives did not cultivate the land, and were in the eyes of the British, "uncivilized". The agrarian revolution in Britain, and the population explosion in the cities, resulted in an increase in crime. As the American Revolution meant that no more convicts could be sent there, the only way to overcome the overcrowding in the jails in Britian was to establish a penal colony in the land discovered by Captain James Cook.
