Our aim was to assess if the trait distribution of body measurements can be more significantly influenced by sex (intraspecific variance) or by species (interspecific variance). To achieve this, we collected in Namibia tettigoniids belonging to two congeneric species of armoured ground crickets: Acanthoplus discoidalis (a significant pest in African croplands) and the long-legged Acanthoplus longipes. We measured in the field the total body length, the maximal pronotal width and length, and the femur and tibia lengths of the hind legs in 106 adults. We also derived the body mass from length and width values of the sampled specimens. No significant differences emerged in the two species by sex. -

JOHNSON1 AND LUBOMI´R MASNER2 ABSTRACT The world fauna of the genus Nixonia is revised. The genus is described, its relationships with other scelionids are discussed, and a key to world species is presented. Nixonia pretiosa Masner (Namibia) and N. atra Masner (Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Zimbabwe) are redescribed, and 12 new species are described: N. bini, new species (Somalia), N. corrugata, new species (South Africa), N. elongata, new species (South Africa), N. flavocincta, new species (Namibia), N. gigas, new species (South Africa), N. krombeini, new species (India, Laos, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam), N. lamorali, new species (South Africa), N. pecki, new species (Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe), N. priesneri, new species (Egypt), N. sicaria, new species (Namibia), N. stygica, new species (South Africa), and N. watshami, new species (Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe). The only host record for the genus is for N. watshami, which been reared from the eggs of Acanthoplus discoidalis (Walker) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae, Hetrodinae) in Botswana and Namibia. Two orthopteran species belonging to the East African genus Spalacomimus, S. verruciferus and S. talpa (Tettigoniidae: Het- rodinae), were investigated using both molecular cytogenetic techniques, including fluorescence in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA and (TTAGG)n telomeric probes, and classical techniques, such as C-banding, fluorochrome CMA3/DAPI staining, and silver impreg- nation. These techniques allowed us to identify cytogenetic markers that were then used to elucidate chromosome organization and differences between species. Chromosomal complements are reported for the first time for both analyzed species, which showed the same chromosomal number of 2n = 24 and the neo-XY sex chromosome system; however, the morphology of neo-sex chromosomes differs between these species. A cluster of the major rDNA (i.e., the nucleolar organizer region, NOR) was found to be located in the interstitial region of the sex chromosomes of S. -

A total number of 63 Ensifera was recorded for this mountain, of which 25 species belonged to Phaneropterinae, 18 to Conocephalinae, 6 to Hetrodinae and three to Pseudophyllinae. The subfamily Meconematinae contributed two species while only one species of the subfamilies Hexacentrinae, Mecopodinae and Saginae was found. Gryllacrididae contributed six species. Three spe- cies recorded in literature were not found again during the research period. 15 species are newly recorded for Mt Kiliman- jaro in this study and one species of Agraeciini newly described. -

The views expressed are not necessarily those of DFID." DFID project reference number: R8253, Crop Protection Programme. Executive Summary Armoured bush crickets (ABC) are destructive, sporadic pests of smallholder cereal crops in semi-arid areas of southern Africa. This one year project extension sought to further test and promote strategies for ABC pest management that were developed in Botswana by the project (R7428) during the previous 3 years. On-farm testing of the baited trench was a priority. This control method previously performed well in on-station tests and is acceptable to farmers. Unfortunately, ABC numbers in 2003 were below outbreak levels and few field sites had sufficient crickets to stage trials. Ultimately, 3 paired-comparison trials were completed, but the findings were not conclusive. Mean numbers of ABC were lower in the treated halves of fields, but not significantly so. It was felt that if the trenches had received daily maintenance then they would have performed better. Nevertheless, thousands of ABC were killed, which impressed the farmers. Attention was again paid to environmental impact. Vertebrate scavengers apparently were not attracted to the baited trench, but certain beneficial beetles were often found dead, trapped in the trenches. -

KEVAN, B.Se., A.I.C.T.A., F.R.E.S.* From the eastern edge of the Kenya Highlands, south-eastwards to the coast, extends a series of ranges of hills roughly parallel to the Meru-Kilimanjaro-Pare• Usambara chain of Northern Tanganyika. These are the Emali Hills which rise to almost 6,000 feet, situated approximately between latitude 02°· OS'and 02°· 10' South and between longitude 370. 12' and 37°· 25' east; The Chyulu Hills rising to nearly 7,000 feet and lying roughly between 02°· 22' and 02°· 48' south and between 37°.40' and 38°.00' east; the Teita Hills which attain over 7,000 feet in height and extend approximately from 03°· 15' to 03°· 30' South and from 38°· 15' to 38°· 30' East; and finally the low coastal Shimba Hills which fall just short of 1,500 feet at their highest point and which are situated between about 04°· 10' to 04°· 15' south and between 39°· 20' and 39°· 25' east. The insect fauna of the Chyulu Hills has already been studied in a series of papers in this Journal, the Orthopterous family Acrididl£ or Short-Horned Grasshoppers having been dealt with by Uvarov and Van Someren (1941). It is interesting, therefore, to com• pare with the Chyulu species material obtained from the other ranges in south-east Kenya, and in addition it was considered that it would be of further interest to include in the present paper a list of the species obtained by members of the East Africa Natural History Society in their Biological Survey of the St.ony Athi area.
