THE HOLIDAYS AND NEW HAMPSHIRE

A day of Thanksgiving had been celebrated in the colonies since 1621 when the Pil- grims landed in Massachusetts, but there was no uniform date for the celebration. Newport, NH native Sarah Buell Hale, who was the editor of the nationally-known fashion magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book, wrote to Presidents Fillmore, Pierce, and Bu- chanan recommending a national holiday. It wasn’t until 1863 when Hale wrote to President Abraham Lincoln that the idea was taken seriously. President Lincoln is- sued the first National Thanksgiving Day Proclamation and the entire country cele- brated the holiday on the same day.

Did you know that President Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire had the first Christ- mas tree in the White House in 1856? The custom came to this country with the German immigrants. Earlier Presidents had decorated the White House but the first “living” tree was credited to Pierce.

It was New Year’s Day in 1863 that President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Procla- mation abolishing slavery in the States. Present at the signing was John Hay, Lin- coln’s private secretary and resident of Newbury, NH. Hay’s home, The Fells, is now the John Hay National Wildlife Refuge.
