Culinaire route Corfu (1 week) Saturday Arrival Nidri Nidri is the home of Sunny Sailing. The view of the water is magnificent. The jetty lies in front of the Armonia hotel where one can make use of the many facilities that the hotel has to offer. Nidri itself has a lively village with a pleasant boulevard. Sunday Nidri - Lefkas Stad The Lefkas Marina is within walking distance of the lively center, where there are many shops and terraces. Although it is a small town, there is a lot to see and do here. There is the fortress of Agia Mavra, there are historic churches, a beautiful lagoon, beautiful squares and colorful narrow alleys. We start our culinary route here at restaurant Ef Zheen. Monday Lefkas Stad - Parga Near the harbor stretches the town itself, which looks like a beautiful white village with red roofs unaffected by the course of time. The character of the town is lively and you can stroll through the many streets with shops and in the evening enjoy the sunset between the castle and the island of Panagia. Here our culinary route takes us to restaurant Castello. The food is prepared with love and everything on the table, from vegetables to the (house) wine is made and comes from our own garden. Tuesday Parga - Corfu Stad There is a small club in Corfu town. It is under the fort that can of course be visited. In this small harbor there is a lovely restaurant with a bar on the water, where local dishes are given a modern twist. Wednesday Corfu Stad - Lakka The bay of the harbor town of Lakka is often full of sailing boats and yachts and is bowl- shaped. The seawater in the bay has the most beautiful colors of blue and partly because of the olive trees and cypresses that grow up to the coastline, it looks like a lake. The harbor town has a small pedestrian promenade with numerous terraces and a few very good res- taurants; we choose this culinary route for restaurant Akis that has a terrace on the water. Thursday Lakka - Mongonisi Mongonissi on the island of Paxos is located in a protected bay where the water is shallow and the beach is on the doorstep. A typical Greek taverna surrounded by olive trees offers delicious local dishes and a unique Greek dance evening. Friday Mongonisi - Nidri Back to the home base. Where you can refuel your own jetty before (unfortunately) the suitcases have to be packed. In the evening, the hotel can serve a deliciously BBQ on the other side of the street. Για την ανασύνθεση της ιστορίας της Κοινότητας της Πάργας κατ' αρχάς κρίθηκε σκόπιμο να μελετηθεί και να αποδελτιωθεί το έργο του Ludwig Salvator, Parga, die Seestadt im Epirus\ το οποίο εκδόθηκε στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα. Στο έργο αυτό δημοσιεύεται αρχειακό υλικό, το οποίο απόκει ται κυρίως στο Αρχείο του νομού Κέρκυρας και μέχρι σήμερα έχει παραμεί νει ανεκμετάλλευτο. Επιπλέον, το γεγονός ότι δεν έχει σωθεί ο καταστατικός χάρτης της Κοινότητας κατέστησε αναγκαίο να μελετηθούν τα κείμενα των πρεσβειών, που η πόλη της Πάργας κατά καιρούς απέστειλε στην κεντρική βενετική διοίκηση, καθώς και στους ανώτερους βενετούς αξιωματούχους * Η παρούσα μελέτη υλοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του υποέργου «Ελληνικές Κοινότητες και Ευρωπαϊκός Κόσμος (13ος-19ος αι.).

Chapter 10 Connectivity, Mobility, and Mediterranean “Portable Archaeology”: Pashas from the Dalmatian Hinterland as Cultural Mediators Gülru Necipoğlu Considering the mobility of persons and stones is one way to reflect upon how movable or portable seemingly stationary archaeological sites might be. Dalmatia, here viewed as a center of gravity between East and West, was cen- tral for the global vision of Ottoman imperial ambitions, which peaked during the 16th century. Constituting a fluid “border zone” caught between the fluctu- ating boundaries of three early modern empires—Ottoman, Venetian, and Austrian Habsburg—the Dalmatian coast of today’s Croatia and its hinterland occupied a vital position in the geopolitical imagination of the sultans. The Ottoman aspiration to reunite the fragmented former territories of the Roman Empire once again brought the eastern Adriatic littoral within the orbit of a tri-continental empire, comprising the interconnected arena of the Balkans, Crimea, Anatolia, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and North Africa. It is important to pay particular attention to how sites can “travel” through texts, drawings, prints, objects, travelogues, and oral descriptions. To that list should be added “traveling” stones (spolia) and the subjective medium of memory, with its transformative powers, as vehicles for the transmission of architectural knowledge and visual culture. I refer to the memories of travelers, merchants, architects, and ambassadors who crossed borders, as well as to Ottoman pashas originating from Dalmatia and its hinterland, with their extraordinary mobility within the promotion system of a vast eastern Mediterranean empire. To these pashas, circulating from one provincial post to another was a prerequisite for eventually rising to the highest ranks of vizier and grand vizier at the Imperial Council in the capital Istanbul, also called Ḳosṭanṭiniyye (Constantinople).

Since they have long been subject to influences from Western Europe, the Ionian Islands form a separate historic and cultural unit than that of continental Greece. The region is divided administratively into four prefectures (Corfu, Lefkada, Kefallinia and Zakinthos) and comprises the islands of Kerkira (Corfu), Zakinthos, Cephalonia (Kefallinia), Lefkada, Ithaca (Ithaki), Paxi, and a number of smaller islands. The Ionian Islands are the sunniest part of Greece, but the southerly winds bring abundant rainfall. The region is noted for its natural beauty, its long history, and cultural tradition. It is also well placed geographically, since it is close to both mainland Greece and Western Europe and thus forms a convenient stepping-stone, particularly for passenger traffic between Greece and the West. These factors have favored the continuous development of tourism, which has become the most dynamic branch of the region’s economy. Island of Corfu CORFU MAP Corfu is located in the northwest part of Greece, with a size of 593 km2 and a costline, which spans for 217 km, is the largest of the Ionian Islands. The principal city of the island and seat of the municipality is also named Corfu, after the island’s name, with a population of 32,000 (2011 census) inhabitants. Currently, according to real estate agents, foreign nationals who permanently reside on Corfu are estimated at 18,000 individuals.

The Ottoman-Russian joint naval expedition (1798-1800) to the Ionian Islands under the French occupation provides the framework for an examination of the Ottoman willingness to join the European system of alliance in the Napoleonic age which brought the victory against France in the Levant in the War of Second Coalition (1798-1802). Collections of the Ottoman Archives and Topkapı Palace Archives in Istanbul as well as various chronicles and treatises in Turkish supply most of the primary sources for this dissertation. Appendices, charts and maps are provided to make the findings on the expedition, finance and logistics more readable. The body of the dissertation is divided into nine chapters discussing in order the global setting and domestic situation prior to the forming of the second coalition, the Adriatic expedition, its financial and logistical aspects with the ensuing socio-economic problems in the Morea, the Sublime Porte’s relations with its protectorate – The Republic of Seven United Islands, and finally the post-war diplomacy.
