He is the man behind the discovery of the Raman Effect. This Indian physicist also won Nobel Prize in 1930 for his discovery. 1 Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (CV Raman) Chandra Shekhar Venkat Raman was the first Indian scientist to have got Nobel Prize in the field of Science. He was awarded Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. In 1954, India honored him with its highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. He carried out ground-breaking work in the field of light scattering and his invention is known as 'Raman-Kiran'. He is known for identifying spectrum substance and having the deep knowledge of the nuclear plan. 1 Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (CV Raman) He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1957. In 1998, the American Chemical Society and Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science recognized Raman's discovery as an International Historic Chemical Landmark. 2 Jagadish Chandra Bose 2 Jagadish Chandra Bose 2 Jagadish Chandra Bose Jagadish Chandra Bose who is a physicist, biologist and archaeologist has pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics. His works have not only created a lot of awareness but he has also anchored the growth of science. 2 Jagadish Chandra Bose Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose was a polymath, physicist, biologist, biophysicist, botanist, and archaeologist. He was the first scientist in the world pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics. He also laid very significant contributions to plant science. He was the first Indian scientist who got the American patent. He is known as the father of Radiology all over the world. 2 Jagadish Chandra Bose His invention ‘Crescograph’ helped him prove that plants are living entity by detecting very small motions within its tissues. In his lifetime, his other major contributions were in physics, and archaeology. He was the first Indian to be elected as a fellow of the royal society in 1920. 3 Homi Jehangir Bhabha 3 Homi Jehangir Bhabha 3 Homi Jehangir Bhabha Father of the Indian Space Program Theoretical physicist; best known as the chief architect of the Indian atomic energy program. Bhabha is amongst the greatest Indian minds and one of the most inspirational scientists whose impact still has a stronghold in the youth of the country. 3 Homi Jehangir Bhabha Father of the Indian Space Program Known as the "father of the Indian nuclear program", Homi J. Bhabha was an India Nuclear physicist without whom Indian nuclear program can't be imagined. He is also known as the Architect of Indian atomic energy program. First, ever nuclear test of the country in 1974 was possible only because of him. 3 Homi Jehangir Bhabha Father of the Indian Space Program The interesting thing is that he started doing research in the field of nuclear science when nobody had known about it. After his death, the Atomic Energy Establishment at Bombay was renamed as the Bhabha Atomic Research center in his honor. 3 Homi Jehangir Bhabha Father of the Indian Space Program In 1948, he became the first chairperson of the atomic energy commission of India. He played a key role in convincing the Nehru Govt to start India’s Nuclear Programme. He was the founding director of two institutions – Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), both of which led to immense growth and development in the field of research. In 1954, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his invaluable contributions to science and engineering. 4 Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya 4 Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born into a Telugu Brahmin family in a village near Bangalore, India. He is known around the world for his contribution in harnessing water resources. And also responsible for the building and consolidation of dams across the country. He is also credited for Block System invention that was used in the conditions of overflow. 4 Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya For his relentless contribution to the society he was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1955. Some of his inventions are still considered as engineering marvels. He was also awarded the British knighthood by King George V, and hence has the honorific “sir”. His birthday is celebrated as engineer’s day in India every year. 5 Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam 5 Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam 5 Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam A.P.J Abdul Kalam is not only a popular scientist of also one of the most loved presidents of India. He has played a crucial role in the development of India’s missile and nuclear weapons programs. His life and achievements have left a strong mark in the youth of the country. 5 Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam Former Indian President Lt. APJ Abdul Kalam associated with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1962. Dr. Kalam was credited for making India's first indigenous missile (SLV-III) as a Satellite Project Director. In 1980, Kalam established Rohini Satellite near the Earth's orbit. It was only because of the contribution of Dr. Kalam that India could include in the International Space Club. 5 Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam He is also credited for making the ISRO Launch Vehicle Program on top. The Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme was bestowed under the leadership of Abdul Kamal. The interesting part is that he designed 'Prithvi' and 'Agni' missiles in an indigenous way. 6 Vikram Sarabhai 6 Vikram Sarabhai Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was an Indian scientist and innovator widely regarded as the father of India's space program. He set the foundation of space programme in India and opened 40 space and research centers in the country. He also contributed in the field of atomic energy, electronics, and many others. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, which is the Indian Space research Organization's lead facility for launch vehicle development located in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), is named in his memory. 6 Vikram Sarabhai He also established the Community Science Center, with an objective to spread scientific knowledge, to create interest in science and to promote experimentation among students, teachers and the general public. The establishment of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was one of his greatest achievements. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1966 and the Padma Vubhushan after his death in 1972. 7 Prafulla Chandra Ray 7 Prafulla Chandra Ray Known for being the founder of Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals pharma company, Prafulla Chandra Ray is a famous academician and chemist. His company is said to be India’s first pharmaceutical company. 7 Prafulla Chandra Ray Prafulla Chandra Ray was one of the greatest Chemist of India. He was the founder of India’s first pharmaceutical company, Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals. He was awarded the Hope Prize for his thesis and research on ‘Conjugated Sulfate of Copper Magnesium Group: A Study of Isomorphs Mixtures and Molecular Combinations.’ 7 Prafulla Chandra Ray Soon after finishing his doctorate, he became a professor at the Presidency College in Calcutta. There he was awarded to the Presidency University in honor of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray. 8 Satyendra Nath Bose 8 Satyendra Nath Bose Mathematician and physicist; best known for his collaboration with Albert Einstein in formulating a theory related to the gaslike qualities of electromagnetic radiation. He has not only made India proud, but his contributions towards the field of science have helped humankind excel to the extent of it. 8 Satyendra Nath Bose Satyendra Nath Bose is best known for his work on quantum mechanics which set the foundation for Bose-Einstein statistics and the theory of the Bose-Einstein condensate. He was honored with India's second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan in 1954. Apart from physics, he did research in biotechnology and literature. He made deep studies in chemistry, geology, zoology, anthropology, engineering and other sciences. 9 Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar 9 Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar Astrophysicist won the Nobel Prize in 1983, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar is known for his research on the evolutionary stages of massive stars. 9 Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar Nephew of greatest scientist C.V. Raman, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1983 "for his theoretical studied of the physical processes of importance to the structure and evolution of the stare". The Chandrasekhar limit is named after him. 9 Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar He worked on a wide variety of astrophysical problems in his lifetime, contributing to the contemporary understanding of stellar structure, white dwarves, stellar dynamics, radiative transfer, the quantum theory of the hydrogen anion, hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic stability, equilibrium and the stability of ellipsoidal figures of equilibrium, general relativity, mathematical theory of black holes and theory of colliding gravitational waves. 9 Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar S. Chandrashekhar was awarded Nobel prize in Physics for his mathematical Theory on black holes. His most celebrated work is on the radiation of energy from stars. Named after him, the Chandrasekhar limit defines the maximum mass of a stable white dwarf star. 10 Har Gobind Khorana (1922-2011) 10 Har Gobind Khorana (1922-2011) 10 Har Gobind Khorana (1922-2011) Khorana is yet another Nobel Prize winner who won this honourable prize in the year 1968. The Biochemist is known for his excellence in demonstrating how the nucleotides in nucleic acids control the synthesis of proteins. 10 Har Gobind Khorana (1922-2011) Indian- American biochemist of Indian origin, Har Gobind Khorana was awarded Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1968 for research that showed how the order of nucleotides in nucleic acids, which carry the genetic code of the cell, control the cell's synthesis of proteins.

    Indian Mathematician 1. Baudhayana (800BC) Baudhayana was the first great geometrician of the Vedic altars. The science of geometry originated in India in connection with the construction of the altars of the Vedic sacrifices. These sacrifices were performed at certain precalculated time, and were of particular sizes and shapes. The expert of sacrifices needed knowledge of astronomy to calculate the time, and the knowledge of geometry to measure distance, area and volume to make altars. One hundred years ago the university started teaching physics courses at the newly created College of Science and Technology. Three of the most brilliant Indian physicists of the twentieth century began their careers there. C.V. Raman, the first Palit Professor of Physics, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1930 for his work on light scattering. The two young lecturers, Meghnad Saha and Satyendra Nath Bose, made major breakthroughs even sooner – Saha in 1920 for deriving the equation that accounts for the spectral classifica- tion of stars and Bose in 1924 for inventing the statisti- cal model that validated Einstein’s hypothesis of light quanta (the Bose Statistics). But this “golden age” of Calcutta physics was P. K. Roy (right) with Satyendra Nath Bose in London, short-lived. Saha went to Allahabad University in March, 1958. Roy studied theoretical physics with Bose for 1923, Bose decamped to Dacca University in 1924, ten years at Calcutta University and then earned his PhD at and Raman left in 1932 to become the first Indian di- Imperial College under Abdus Salam.     SPEECH BY THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA, SHRI PRANAB MUKHERJEE AT THE INAUGURATION OF 100TH SESSION OF INDIAN SCIENCE CONGRESS Kolkata, West Bengal : 03-01-2013 At the outset, I wish the participants to the Centenary session of Indian Science Congress and the people of the Nation, a purposeful and productive New Year. My warmest congratulations to the Indian Science Congress on the occasion of the celebration of their centenary. The Prime Minister of India generally inaugurates the annual sessions of Indian Science Congress. In the current year, the Association has elected the Prime Minister as its General President. I congratulate Dr. Manmohan Singh for being elected as the General President of Indian Science Congress in this historic year. It is a befitting honour. I can from personal experience vouchsafe the abiding faith of Dr. Manmohan Singh on education, science and technology. The good performance of science and technology sector in the recent years, I believe, owes greatly to the generous government support for S&T catalysed by the Prime Minister. Ladies and Gentlemen: 2. I am an alumnus of Calcutta University. Naturally, I am delighted to participate in a function co-organized by Calcutta University. As an alumnus, I fondly remember defining role of this university and Sir Asutosh Mukherjee in nurturing the Indian Science Congress in the early years. Kolkata has remained historically a city of culture, of knowledge. All Nobel Prizes 1 awarded for work from India are somehow linked to the city of Kolkata. Sir Ronald Ross carried out his pioneering research on Malaria in this city for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1902.

Bose II The Classical Determinism and the Quantum Theory Preface The role of a father figure of Indian science was more or less thrust upon Professor Bose, yet he was grossly misunderstood by many. The image of the idle genius who wasted his powers in intellectual small talk has persisted. It is the task of the biographer to find out if such an image was based on justifiable assumptions. Between the admirers and the detractors, the legend has grown, and the man has been somewhat cast in the background. Bose is perhaps still too close to us historically for a proper perspective. We have made an attempt to show him against the changing times when science was making rapid strides in India, and white doing so other personalities have been drawn into the canvas. We realise, however, the inadequacy of our attempt for Bose was a very complex personality. It would have taken years of research and labour to collect and sort all the materials which, however, are not easily obtainable. Bose’s habit of not keeping any record, letters or diary has further handicapped us; hence some of the information could not be verified.
