Chandra Shekhar Venkat Raman was the first Indian scientist to have got Nobel Prize in the field of Science. He was awarded Nobel Prize in in 1930. In 1954, honored him with its highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. He carried out ground-breaking work in the field of scattering and his invention is known as 'Raman-Kiran'. He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1957. In 1998, the American Chemical Society and Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science recognized Raman's discovery as an International Historic Chemical Landmark. 2

In 1948, he became the first chairperson of the atomic energy commission of India. He played a key role in convincing the Nehru Govt to start India’s Nuclear Programme. He was the founding director of two institutions – Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), both of which led to immense growth and development in the field of research. In 1954, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his invaluable contributions to science and engineering. 4

Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was an Indian scientist and innovator widely regarded as the father of India's space program. He set the foundation of space programme in India and opened 40 space and research centers in the country. He also contributed in the field of atomic energy, electronics, and many others. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, which is the Indian Space research Organization's lead facility for launch vehicle development located in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), is named in his memory. 6
