The stories are different, but it is obvious where Bleach got its beginnings. Picking up Zombie Powderthe one thing that stood out to me was how much the cover looked like the cover of Bleach, Volume Immanent God Blues. So, naturally, I couldn't stop making the comparisons as 28 December Unfortunately, the curse of Zombie Powder is that it will always be compared to the insanely popular Bleach. So, naturally, I couldn't stop making the comparisons as I read through. Undeniably, Tite Kubo's artistry has become more refined over the years since his first manga publication. There is a definite maturity to his skill that can be seen in Bleach. To be fair, though, that will be the only comparisons I make as this is a review for Zombie Powder. Zombie Powder is a Western-style story adventure complete with gunslingers and outlaws. The story wasn't all that exciting until Mr. Smith appeared, and then it started to get interesting. I loved that his favorite words are "D Cup"! The characterization and story aren't strongly developed, but it's interesting enough to continue. It's a decent debut manga that I'm curious enough about to find out what happens next. Aug 01, Bec becklebooks rated it liked it. Battles, humour, challenges and character building! But when a friend picked up the first volume of Zombie Powder on the virtue it was by the same creator, I warily borrowed her copy and gave it a shot. I fell in love pretty instantly. Perhaps it was due to previous experience with similar series like Trigun and Cowboy Bebopor perhaps there was just something in this series that did click for me where BLEACH failed. Whatever it was, I loved it, immediately had to go buy my own copy, and dedicatedly collected the other three volumes as they were released Still, I held onto them pretty fiercely and loved the story, until at one point I was forced to sell off some books to appease my parents, and I very reluctantly and with many tears, said goodbye to my copies at the counter of a Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand v. 1 Books. I never forgot about Zombie Powder though, and made it a goal to eventually hunt down the books again. Growing up and seeing the series go out of print has slowed my plans just a tad, but I'm not giving up until I own Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand v. 1 four again. So let's go through this first volume. We're introduced to a pretty straightforward setting and generalized goal for the characters: in this world there are 12 magic rings called the Rings of the Dead, that when brought together, can produce a substance called "zombie powder" that can allegedly grant eternal life to the living and restore life to the dead. People seeking the rings are called "powder hunters", and we start quickly gathering up a band of protagonists who are powder hunters, for varying reasons. This is somewhat bloody and gory, but it's very fast-paced and has very well-played humor that keeps it entertaining. The volume ends on a somewhat dramatic, climatic moment, but I think that's to its advantage. Let's go over the [currently three] main characters you meet in this story. So far we have a powder hunter named Gamma shown on the front cover, who is our main protagonist, a young pickpocket named Elwood, who is a side protagonist but serves more as a POV character in many ways, and C. Smith, a mystery man of sorts and Gamma's partner [in crime? Gamma's character design was what Kubo said he later went on to base another character in BLEACH off of, at least loosely, but he basically walks onto the scene and comes across as something Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand v. 1 a badass edgelord in terms of appearance, with an outwardly comic and overplayed ridiculous demeanor. We quickly learn that not only is he a wanted man with a high bounty on his head, but the face he puts on is an act to hide a deadly killer and buried secrets that are to be revealed. Personally, cool as I thought Gamma was when I was a teen, I'm lukewarm on his character these days. I'd even go so far as to dare say that characters like Gamma are the reason I'm so unimpressed with characters like the MC of the Throne of Glass series. Then we have Elwood. Elwood is a street urchin with a heart of gold, an archetype further defined by motivation to look after his sister and later, view spoiler [upon her death at the hands of the gang that both trained Elwood as a pickpocket and have been harassing and using him since, hide spoiler ] he becomes a powder hunter shadowing Gamma. Elwood is interesting because all things considered, he feels like HE should be the main protagonist of this manga, and he isn't. He is, as previously stated, the POV character we follow throughout this first volume, as a lot of the story is thus far seen as Elwood experiences it. Still though, I like him, because he's a very honest sort of character with a lot of potential pickpocketing habits aside. Smith is actually my favorite character of the three we meet in this volume. Later, while Gamma and Elwood are being held hostage, Smith shows up, gets information from the guard and then kills the guard, immediately freeing Gamma and Elwood afterward. Smith introduces himself as an ally, and we are told that he's the only man who is a match for Gamma in terms of combat skill and capability. The two are powder hunters and one another's partners, and the general assumption is made that Smith probably also has a bounty on HIS head as a result of his connection with Gamma. So, so little is known about Smith beyond a name and even that might be a pseudonym and his skill with a gun. He's the most mysterious character in the group, and his demeanor fluctuates according to the situation and his plan of action. He's also incredibly devious, as we see in the final conflict in this volume, using deductive reasoning to find out the secret of the gang leader Calder, and then using that to assist Gamma in winning the fight. I love Smith, he's my favorite character in this series, and Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand v. 1 probably never going to change. He deserves more appreciation overall. It's a lot of fun and plays with so many tropes in a vibrant way that makes it memorable. I was surprized there were actually quite a few Z options! But this was a zombie western, so it won. It was an interesting adventure, but I don't think I will continue the series. Feb 20, Michele Lee rated it really liked it Shelves: reviewedwishlist, manga-anime. Smith in their search for the Rings of the Dead, a group of legendary artifacts with the power to resurrect the departed and grant immortality to anyone who collects enough of them. The series has an anachronistic western setting, with sparsely populated human settlements separated by desert. The trio travel from town to town in this world, fighting other criminals for possession of the Rings of the Dead. They obtain three of said rings in the course of the story, but due to the series' cancellation, the plot is left incomplete as Kubo had a breakdown. Although critical reception was largely mediocre Zombiepowder. The zombie powder is a life-giving substance that can imbue an individual with limitless life forcegranting them immortality or even raising them from the dead. Zombie powder can only be obtained by gathering twelve rings called the Rings of the Dead. These rings are dangerous artifacts that, individually, devour the life force of anyone they touch, rendering them comatose, but when they find a host, they give birth to the mysterious and powerful substance; 'Zombie Powder'. The story begins with young pickpocket John Elwood Shepherd befriending powder hunter Gamma Akutabi, a highly wanted criminal who possesses one Ring of the Dead, after a botched attempt to rob him. Another member of the local gang for which Elwood works sees the two together and assumes Elwood Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand v. 1 harboring the criminal in hopes of turning him in for his substantial bounty. The gang attacks Elwood's home, and Gamma comes to the rescue, but not before Elwood's sister Sheryl is slain. Following the gang attack Elwood decides to accompany Gamma in his powder hunting in hopes of resurrecting Sheryl. After leaving Elwood's hometown, the pair meet up with Gamma's long-time partner C. Smith, another highly wanted powder hunter. Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand v. 1 has infiltrated the ranks of Ash Daughter, a gang which has found a Ring of the Dead. The three successfully obtain the ring following a fight with the gang's Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand v. 1, Ranewater Calder. In this fight Gamma reveals that he is pyrokinetic as a result of mastering the fictional sword art karin zanjutsuwhich he uses to kill Calder, ending the first volume of the series. The remaining three volumes concern themselves with the battle for a third ring, which has been embedded in the body of comatose Emilio Lufas Getto for years. Gamma and company learn of Emilio's existence from his sister Wolfina, a tabloid journalist and crimefighter who does not believe in the Rings of the Dead, and offer to restore him in exchange for the ring he contains. Before they can do so, however, Emilio is kidnapped by Balmunk the Mystic, a powder hunting magician who leads a circus-themed gang. Elwood, Gamma, Smith, and Wolfina team up to retrieve Emilio, and succeed in doing so after a number of battles with Balmunk's henchmen. The conflict culminates in a fight between Gamma and a giant golem summoned by Balmunk, which Gamma defeats after entering and leaving a berserk state. Balmunk is beaten but not killed, and departs swearing revenge on Gamma. After rescuing Emilio, Gamma arranges to have the Ring of the Dead removed from his body by an old friend, mad scientist Nazna Gemini. The characters are brought to Nazna's lab by Angelle Cooney, a young girl with a romantic interest in Gamma and the power of teleportation. Once there, Gemini agrees to operate to remove the ring from Emilio in exchange for a year of experimentation rights on Wolfina. Due to the series' early cancellation, Zombiepowder. It is left ambiguous whether Elwood chooses to follow Gamma, stay with Wolfina and Emilio, or become a powder hunter in his own right. Smith C. There are several differences between the Japanese and English releases of Zombiepowder. The cover of the second manga volume, which featured an illustration of C. Smith holding a gun to his own head, was redrawn for the English edition to instead feature a picture of Gamma in sunglasses. Two likely reasons for this success are that its English release followed the international popularity of Tite Kubo's second manga series Bleachand that the American market has a larger appetite for series which focus on violent action. Critical reception of Zombiepowder. The universal criticism in these reviews is that the series as a whole lacks originality, with most mentioning that it reads very much like an author's Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand v. 1 effort, and would appeal mostly to fans of the author. Reception for individual elements of Zombiepowder. The series premise of seeking magical items was criticized as cliche by ANN and IGN, but the parasitic nature of the rings and zombie powder themselves were complimented by MangaCast and IGN for lending suspense to the plot. The setting was criticized by ANN for not having much effort put into it, being too similar to Trigunand seeming to be chosen just for the sake of coolness, while IGN liked the mixture of the old west, arcane, and technological. The quality of individual characters in the series was again a mixed bag, both for artistic design and personalities, but with a general consensus that the characters did not go much beyond their respective tropes. Of all the elements of the series, Zombiepowder. ANN said the action was entertainingly violent, well-paced, and interspersed well with comedic moments, but with the disclaimer that the action was "the entire sum and substance" of the series. The theme is fighting. Sitting there and just reading it without thinking is fine. But if you ever feel like Zombie Powder: The Man with the Black Hand v. 1 please try to use your mind as you read.
