Final Report Nordmann’s Greenshank Population Analysis, at Pantai Cemara Jambi Cipto Dwi Handono1, Ragil Siti Rihadini1, Iwan Febrianto1 and Ahmad Zulfikar Abdullah1 1Yayasan Ekologi Satwa Alam Liar Indonesia (Yayasan EKSAI/EKSAI Foundation) Surabaya, Indonesia Background Many shorebirds species have declined along East Asian-Australasian Flyway which support the highest diversity of shorebirds in the world, including the globally endangered species, Nordmann’s Greenshank. Nordmann’s Greenshank listed as endangered in the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species because of its small and declining population (BirdLife International, 2016). It’s one of the world’s most threatened shorebirds, is confined to the East Asian–Australasian Flyway (Bamford et al. 2008, BirdLife International 2001, 2012). Its global population is estimated at 500–1,000, with an estimated 100 in Malaysia, 100–200 in Thailand, 100 in Myanmar, plus unknown but low numbers in NE India, Bangladesh and Sumatra (Wetlands International 2006). The population is suspected to be rapidly decreasing due to coastal wetland development throughout Asia for industry, infrastructure and aquaculture, and the degradation of its breeding habitat in Russia by grazing Reindeer Rangifer tarandus (BirdLife International 2012). Mostly Nordmann’s Greenshanks have been recorded in very small numbers throughout Southeast Asia, and there are few places where it has been reported regularly. In Myanmar, for example, it was rediscovered after a gap of almost 129 years. The total count recorded by the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) in 2006 for Myanmar was 28 birds with 14 being the largest number at a single locality (Naing 2007). In 2011–2012, Nordmann’s Greenshank was found three times in Sumatera Utara province, N Sumatra. -

6 CHAPTER 2 THEORITICAL FOUDNATION 2.1 Theories of Picture Book A picture book combines visual and verbal narratives in one medium which is in a book format. The illustration can be made with different range of media, digitally or manually (Sipe,1998). Picture book is called a picture book, because the illustrations dominate the text and they are both equally important (Summer,2013). Yet, there are several picture books are told completely by pictures only. For this particular project, the use of a well-balanced text and illustrations to introduce young readers about animals is necessary, because it will be an educational picture book for young readers not just a story book. 2.2 Theories of Picture Book Roles Picture book is written to help children discover about their surroundings, it is also a written artifact that transmit cultural information and values their surroundings. Books that children read and learn with, including used in classrooms for educational, can impact their self-awareness (Chaudhri & Teale,2013) and help them to establish a positive self-identity (Hall,2008; Levin,2007). Picture book can be an educational tool, most children can interact with it. Consequently picture books contents are matters (Koss,2015). Therefore, picture book is chosen as the main media to educate and raise young readers early awareness toward endemic animals of Indonesia. This picture book will include colorful and contemporary illustrations to gain young readers attention. It will also include fun facts about each of the endangered animal with simple words and short paragraph to help young children 7 understand the information easily. -

Rihadini Jambi, Indonesia 2019 The aim of this project are to Identify the condition of Far Eastern Curlew Population and the remaining potential sites for Far Eastern Curlew stopover in Sumatera, Indonesia and protect the remaining stopover sites for Far Eastern Curlew by educating the government, local people and community around the sites as the effort of reducing the threat of habitat degradation, habitat loss and human disturbance at stopover area. INTRODUCTION The Far Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariencis) is the largest shorebird in the world and is endemic to East Asian – Australian Flyway. It is one of the Endangered migratory shorebird with estimated global population at 38.000 individual, although a more recent update now estimates the population at 32.000 (Wetland International, 2015 in BirdLife International, 2017). An analysis of monitoring data collected from around Australia and New Zealand (Studds et al. in prep. In BirdLife International, 2017) suggests that the species has declined much more rapidly than was previously thought; with an annual rate of decline of 0.058 equating to a loss of 81.7% over three generations. Habitat loss occuring as a result of development is the most significant threat currently affecting migratory shorebird along the EAAF (Melville et al. 2016 in EAAFP 2017). Loss of habitat at critical stopover sites in the Yellow Sea is suspected to be the key threat to this species and given that it is restricted to East Asian - Australasian Flyway, the declines in the non-breeding are to be representative of the global population. -

Javan Lapwing Wet Season Survey at Muara Gembong, Bekasi, Jawa Barat Investigation and Searchings the “Mysterious” Bird of the World Surya Purnama Javan Lapwing Survey at Muara Gembong, Bekasi, Jawa Barat Investigation and Searchings the “Mysterious” Bird of the World Background Javan Lapwing was described as local and uncommon, apparently only ever encountered in scattered pairs. The bird is usually catagorized as "critically endangered, possibly extinct", even though the last sighting dates as far back as 1940, when one was reported from West Java. The fact that it was reputedly impossible to overlook suggests very strongly that it is no longer present at any site studied in recent decades by ornithologists. However, there are areas that have not been recently surveyed and recent unconfirmed reports that require investigation, and recently translated observations from the 1920s suggest that its habitat requirements may have been less restricted than previously thought, perhaps providing some further hope for its continued existence. The Javan Wattled Lapwing is usually catagorized as "critically endangered, possibly extinct", even though the last sighting dates as far back as 1940, when one was reported from West Java. We have decided to continue the search survey in April 2010 in collaboration with Kutilang Indonesia Foundation and supported by OBC Small Grant. During our survey, many people who believed that they had seen Javan Lapwing before. Also in mid-2003 when Iwan Londo survey’s in Lumajang, East Java. Local people reporting that they had seen the bird too. Based to our interview on last survey, we found many people who believed that they had seen Javan Lapwing before. -

Annual Report 2012 Annual Report 2012 The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund provides financial support to species conservation projects worldwide. In 2012, The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund supported 217 projects in 75 countries with more than $1.5m. More than $1.36m was granted to species listed as Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. Your Highness In 2012 the Fund has been able to greatly aid the global effort to conserve the diversity of life by continuing its success and giving $1.5m to more than 200 projects worldwide. Since its inception, the Fund has now disbursed more than $8.7m to targeted species conservation work, implemented through nearly 825 projects in more than 125 countries across six continents. The impact of the Fund continues to amaze me. Among the more than 200 projects supported in 2012, the financial support provided by the Fund helped train a pilot in Kenya who is now patrolling rhino habitat for poachers; it helped locate the breeding grounds of a sea bird previously thought to be extinct; it aided in the discovery of several new tree species in Mexico and many new species of spiders in India; it protected the habitat of a butterfly in Nepal and that of a cave-dwelling amphibian in Croatia. The stories of success are replicated across many species, in many locations across the globe. In 2012, the Fund received more than 1,500 grant applications – a statistic clearly indicating the global urgency of species conservation and the popularity of the Fund. -

FORKTAIL 27 (2011): 63–72 The waterbirds and coastal seabirds of Timor-Leste: new site records clarifying residence status, distribution and taxonomy COLIN R. TRAINOR The status of waterbirds and coastal seabirds in Timor-Leste is refined based on surveys during 2005–2010. A total of 2,036 records of 82 waterbird and coastal seabirds were collected during 272 visits to 57 Timor-Leste sites, and in addition a small number of significant records from Indonesian West Timor, many by colleagues, are included. More than 200 new species by Timor-Leste site records were collected. Key results were the addition of three waterbirds to the Timor Island list (Red-legged Crake Rallina fasciata, vagrant Masked Lapwing Vanellus miles and recent colonist and Near Threatened Javan Plover Charadrius javanicus) and the first records in Timor-Leste for three irregular visitors: Australian White Ibis Threskiornis molucca, Ruff Philomachus pugnax and Near Threatened Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata. Records of two subspecies of Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica, including the first confirmed records outside Australia of G. n. macrotarsa, were also of note. Conserving shorebirds in human-dominated landscapes Micha Victoria Jackson Bachelor of Arts, Environmental Studies ORCID: 0000-0002-5150-2962 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2020 School of Biological Sciences i Abstract Wetlands support biodiversity and provide critical ecosystem services but have been severely impacted by human activity. Shorebirds are a diverse group of waterbirds that usually forage in shallow water, making them highly dependent on wetlands. Coastal shorebirds are increasingly threatened in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway where coastlines are heavily developed and wetlands have been extensively modified and degraded. In this human-dominated landscape, shorebirds sometimes aggregate in artificial wetlands associated with human production activities including agriculture, aquaculture and salt production. However, it is unknown whether artificial habitat use is widespread by shorebirds across the flyway, if such habitats could help to offset negative population trends, or how artificial habitats should be managed alongside natural habitats to achieve conservation outcomes. This thesis investigates the use of artificial and natural habitats by shorebirds in heavily developed coastal regions of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, and suggests conservation and management actions in this setting. Chapter 2 presents the first large-scale review of coastal artificial habitat use by shorebirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Analysing data from multiple monitoring programs and the literature, it shows that 83 shorebird species have occurred on more than 170 artificial sites of eight different land uses throughout the flyway, including 36 species in internationally important numbers. However, occurrence and foraging on artificial habitats is uneven among species, and different land uses support varying abundances and species diversity. -

Schulze Wien, im März 2010 Abstract: Based on current knowledge the distribution of the Javan Plover Charadrius javanicus is predominantly restricted to Java, where it occurs in coastal habitats. This study tried to quantify the species´ habitat requirements and to contribute to estimating its actual population size. During a survey of 0.5 km long transects along a total of 72.5 km of coastline, a total of 218 Javan Plovers corresponding to a mean (± SD) of 1.47 (± 2.64) birds per 0.5 km shoreline was recorded. However, the density of Javan Plovers differed significantly between surveyed coastal regions. Highest abundances were found on the south coast of Java. Furthermore, abundances of Javan Plovers differed significantly between coastal habitats. Wide (>50m), small- grained sandy beaches were the preferred habitat. The likelihood of Javan Plover occurrence on small-grained beaches increased with beach and flotsam width, while no effect of human disturbance could be found. A weak trend of a decline in Plover numbers towards beaches without any vegetation was found. GLMs indicated that beach width was the best explanatory variable for predicting the occurrence of Javan Plovers in 500 m transects. Along 76 transects of sandy beach habitat including lagoons, a total of 205 Javan Plovers or 5.39 individuals per 1 km shoreline were observed.
