PAPER VI UNIT I Non-fictional Prose—General Introduction, Joseph Addison’s The Spectator Papers: The Uses of the Spectator, The Spectator’s Account of Himself, Of the Spectator 1.1. Introduction: Eighteenth Century English Prose The eighteenth century was a great period for English prose, though not for English poetry. Matthew Arnold called it an "age of prose and reason," implying thereby that no good poetry was written in this century, and that, prose dominated the literary realm. Much of the poetry of the age is prosaic, if not altogether prose-rhymed prose. Verse was used by many poets of the age for purposes which could be realized, or realized better, through prose. Our view is that the eighteenth century was not altogether barren of real poetry. Even then, it is better known for the galaxy of brilliant prose writers that it threw up. In this century there was a remarkable proliferation of practical interests which could best be expressed in a new kind of prose-pliant and of a work a day kind capable of rising to every occasion. This prose was simple and modern, having nothing of the baroque or Ciceronian colour of the prose of the seventeenth-century writers like Milton and Sir Thomas Browne. Practicality and reason ruled supreme in prose and determined its style. It is really strange that in this period the language of prose was becoming simpler and more easily comprehensible, but, on the other hand, the language of poetry was being conventionalized into that artificial "poetic diction" which at the end of the century was so severely condemned by Wordsworth as "gaudy and inane phraseology." 1.2. -

THE REALITY OF MORAL IMPERATIVES IN LIBERAL RELIGION HOWARD LESNICK Fordham Professor of Law University of Pennsylvania Abstract This paper uses a classic one-liner attributed to Dostoyoevski’s Ivan Karamozov, "Without God everything is permitted," to explore some differences between what I term traditional and liberal religion. The expansive connotations and implications of Ivan’s words are grounded in the historic association of wrongfulness and punishment, and in a reaction against the late modern challenge to the inexorability of that association, whether in liberal religion or in secular moral thought. The paper argues that, with its full import understood, Ivan’s claim begs critical questions of the meaning and source of compulsion and choice, and of knowledge and belief regarding the specific content of religiously grounded moral norms. -

‘THESE STRANGE CRIMINALS’: AN ANTHOLOGY OF PRISON MEMOIRS BY CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS FROM THE GREAT WAR TO THE COLD WAR In many modern wars, there have been those who have chosen not to fight. Be it for religious or moral reasons, some men and women have found no justification for breaking their conscientious objection to vio- lence. In many cases, this objection has lead to severe punishment at the hands of their own governments, usually lengthy prison terms. Peter Brock brings the voices of imprisoned conscientious objectors to the fore in ‘These Strange Criminals.’ This important and thought-provoking anthology consists of thirty prison memoirs by conscientious objectors to military service, drawn from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and centring on their jail experiences during the First and Second World Wars and the Cold War. Voices from history – like those of Stephen Hobhouse, Dame Kathleen Lonsdale, Ian Hamilton, Alfred Hassler, and Donald Wetzel – come alive, detailing the impact of prison life and offering unique perspectives on wartime government policies of conscription and imprisonment. Sometimes intensely mov- ing, and often inspiring, these memoirs show that in some cases, indi- vidual conscientious objectors – many well-educated and politically aware – sought to reform the penal system from within either by publicizing its dysfunction or through further resistance to authority. 1 FANY at the Western Front An overview of the role of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry Corps in WW1: 1914 – 1919 During my period of service with Lord Kitchener in the Soudan Campaign, where I had the misfortune to be wounded, it occurred to me that there was a missing link somewhere in the Ambulance Department which, in spite of the changes in warfare, had not altered very materially since the days of Crimea when Florence Nightingale and her courageous band of helpers went out to succour and save the wounded. On my return from active service I thought out a plan which I anticipated would meet the want, but it was not until September 1907 that I was able to found a troop of young women to see how my ideas on the subject would work. My idea was that each member of this Corps would receive, in addition to a thorough training in First Aid, a drilling in cavalry movements, signalling and camp work, so that nurses could ride onto the battlefield to attend to the wounded who might otherwise have been left to a slow death. Captain Edward Baker 1910 “F-A-N-Y” spelled a passing Tommy as he leant from the train. “I wonder what that stands for?” “First anywhere?” suggested another. 2 The small group of spirited women that Edward Baker gathered together in 1907, (which included his daughter, Katy), was to evolve into one of the most decorated of women’s units ever. He named them the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry Corps. -

Medical History, 1994, 38: 160-177. MEDICAL WOMEN AT WAR, 1914-1918 by LEAH LENEMAN * Women had a long and difficult struggle before they were allowed to obtain a medical education.' Even in 1914 the Royal Free was the only London teaching hospital to admit them and some universities (including Oxford and Cambridge) still held out against them. The cost of a medical education continued to be a major obstacle, but at least there were enough schools by then to ensure that British women who wanted and could afford one could get it. The difficulty was in finding residency posts after qualifying, in order to make a career in hospital medicine. Few posts were available outside the handful of all-women hospitals, and medical women were channelled away from the more prestigious specialities-notably general surgery-into those less highly regarded, like gynaecology and obstetrics, and into asylums, dispensaries, public health, and, of course, general practice.2 When war broke out in August 1914, the Association of Registered Medical Women expected that women doctors would be needed mostly for civilian work, realizing that "as a result of the departure of so many medical men to the front there will be vacancies at home which medical women may usefully fill".3 As early as February 1915 it was estimated that a sixth of all the medical men in Scotland had taken commissions in the RAMC. In April of that year it was reported that "there is hardly a resident post not open to a qualified woman if she cares to apply for it". -

Colette O'niel: a Season in Repertory 1924 by Local Enthusiasts Determined to Bring Serious Theatre to a Town Then Totally Dependent on the Touring System
Some time before first seeing her I had observed the name Colette O'Niel on a large poster near a railway-crossing which luridly advertis ed a tou ri ng me 1od rama ca 11 ed The Woman in the Case, then performi ng at the Hull Alexandra Theatre. But the name attracted only because a schoolmate bore the name Neil Collet, and the inversion amused me. One day in the autumn of 1925 a chance encounter with a former school Prefect led to our early visit to see the newly formed Hull Little Theatre company. The first play was to be C.K. Munro's recent London success, At Mrs. Beam's. This thespian group had been formed in Colette O'Niel: a season in repertory 1924 by local enthusiasts determined to bring serious theatre to a town then totally dependent on the touring system. The first season was successful, and the Hull amateurs were ambitious. They now embarked on fter the death of Lady Constance Malleson, the London Evening a ten-week season with a professional producer, A.R. Whatmore, a young Standard published a letter from me extolling her. I wrote it after A stage designer of genius, and five professional actors who formed the reading reviews of Phe Life of Bertrand Russell, most of which virtually nucleus of an otherwise still amateur company. ignored Colette in favour of Lady Ottoline Morrell; and the Standard The leading man was Colin Clive. 論 文 Hope out of Nihilism: The Signifi cance of Music and Silence in A Passage to India DRYDEN Izumi 要 旨 二十世紀を代表するイギリスの小説家エドワード・モーガン・フォースター(通 称 E. M. フォースター)は,同時代同国の作曲家ベンジャミン・ブリテンに「音 楽作家」と呼ばれた。その理由は,フォースターが音楽愛好家であったことをは じめ,ベートヴェンの交響曲やワーグナーのオペラをはじめとした音楽作品から 音楽的要素や音楽的構造を理解して小説において意図的に使用しているからで ある。生存中に出版された小説五作品のうち,最後の小説『インドへの道』に おいては,ベートーヴェンの交響曲第九番の形式を発展させてオペラ形式を取り 入れようとしたと考えられる。小説ペンギン版の『インドへの道』の巻末に収録 されているフォースター作品の評論担当の批評家ピーター・バラは,『インドへの 道』の三部構造は交響曲の三楽章の構成に類似していると指摘している。一方で, ブリテンは,フォースターの小説の構成はオペラ的であると示唆している。小説『イ ンドへの道』は,ベートーヴェンの交響曲第五番の構造を持つフォースターの4 番目の小説『ハワーズ・エンド』とフォースターの晩年の作品であるオペラ『ビリー・ バッド』の中間に位置する。本論では,交響曲とオペラの両方の構造を併せ持 つと考えられる『インドへの道』に焦点を当て,単に音楽的音だけではなく,「多 様な声」をも作品に取り入れようと試みたフォースターの小説技巧に注目し,こ の作品を音楽的視点から再考していきたい。 Keywords: E. M. Forster (Edward Morgan Forster, 1879-1970) as “our most musical author” (Borrello 144). Forster certainly was a “musical author” who used musical elements and forms to structure his literary works, particularly the fi ve novels published during his lifetime. Another twentieth-century British writer, Anthony Burgess (John Anthony Burgess Wilson, 1917-1993), who also used musical elements and forms in his works, judged Forster’s fi fth novel A Passage to India (1924) his “last and best” (The Novel Now 32). By contrast, Forster considered A Passage to India “a failure” (King 73). Forster’s negative assessment of this novel remains puzzling, considering that many of his friends regarded it highly, including the British novelist Virginia Woolf who praised A Passage to India by observing: “Now Mr Forster knows exactly how to use the elements of his genius” (Childs 52). -

Forster’s Howards End: Resistance to Totalitarianism and Aesthetic Totalisation YUKIKO MASUDA -1- -2- 1. Introduction Music was an integral part of E. M. Forster’s life as he says, “Music has meant an enormous amount to me” (qtd. in Fillion Rhythm 1) (1). As this essay will demonstrate, in his fourth published novel, Howards End (1910), music plays an essential role in resisting not only totalitarianism but also aesthetic totalisation that acts in the same way as the political system. As regards totalitarianism, in the final paragraph of “What I Believe” (1938), his most famous and frequently quoted essay, Forster writes, “The dictator-hero can grind down his citizens till they are all alike, but he cannot melt them into a single man.... He can order them to merge, he can incite them to mass-antics, but they are obliged to be born separately, and to die separately, and, owing to these unavoidable termini, will always be running off the totalitarian rails” (TC 73). Forster thus rejects the totalitarianism that controls or limits every aspect of individual life in order to create societal homogeneity. According to Hannah Arendt, twentieth-century totalitarianism had its ideological root in the “tribal nationalisms” of movements such as Pan-Germanism, where “people were either ‘ours’ or ‘not-ours’” (Gleason 111) (2). Side by side with a nation, which is thought of as a unified group of people with common cultural and ethnic characteristics attributed to them, a class society existed, where people were grouped into a set of hierarchical social categories (3). -
