Apparently Ravi Shankar created the music in 11 hours straight, in one session, because he was in the middle of a tight touring schedule. He began creating music as a child in Western Pennsylvania, first on piano and then taking up other instruments. Definitely a winner. Early soundtrack fans had to make do with a Judy Garland 78rpm disc and a creaky Decca LP which featured key songs re-recorded by the Ken Darby Singers, but today's buyers can enjoy all the remastered originals, alongside outtakes like the 'Jitterbug' song. The Kuleshov effect is still widely used in cinema today, as it allows a filmmaker to communicate with the audience solely through editing. As the name implies, the Tonal Montage helps to establish the tone of a scene through editing shots together that have the same thematic aim. Rumours that a stagehand can be seen committing suicide on screen as Dorothy trots down the Yellow Brick Road are baloney it's a bird stretching its wings , but have simply added to the film's growing cult cache. The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body.

Announces: NIAGARA Composed by SOL KAPLAN RIVER OF NO RETURN Composed by LIONEL NEWMAN, LEIGH HARLINE, and CYRIL MOCKRIDGE Intrada Special Collection Volume ISC 157 Intrada's latest double-header from the 20th Century Fox catalog features two films starring Marilyn Monroe. The first, Niagara (1953), is a tight, nasty film noir, crisply directed by veteran Henry Hathaway and starring Monroe, Joseph Cotten as her tortured husband, and Jean Peters as an innocent young woman whose kindness entangles her with Monroe’s nefarious plans to get rid of her spouse. Composing duties fell to composer Sol Kaplan, whose music for Niagara features an aural landscape of fretfully circling strings, blaring brass, and rumbling percussion. There is unsettling thriller music aplenty here and even the occasional moment of overheated humor. The second score featured is to the 1954 film River of No Return, telling the tale of a rancher with a past (Robert Mitchum), his young son, and a dance hall girl (Monroe) who yearns for a better life – all thrown together by chance and forced to brave Indians, mountain lions, a host of scurvy Western no-accounts, and the vagaries of a wild and woolly river. Their efforts are supported by a delightfully varied and colorful score, delivered by no less than four composers. Lionel Newman wrote the main title song, “River Of No Return,” with lyrics by Fox mainstay Ken Darby, here sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford. This tune—along with another Newman/Darby composition, “Down in the Meadow”—gets considerable instrumental play in the score; both featuring charming pieces of gentle Americana.

Forbidden Zone Hide Spoilers. Merry Lunacy TonyDood 4 August I avoided this film for years even though I seek out movies that appear to have been created by people with "unstable" minds Jodorowsky, Ken Russell, Lynch and Jess Franco. The problem was the box cover art. The cartoon of Susan Tyrrell is so lurid and 80's it was really off-putting. And the promise of "offensive" humor made it sound like a low-rent John Waters movie. I've gone beyond "it's fun to be shocked" movies and demand some quality. How surprised I was when I finally gambled on this one! I had seen the last minutes on IFC or some cable station late one night while flipping channels. My first thoughts were probably like anyone's would be All jumping around singing, "The Forbidden Zone! The image rivaled Fellini! I was absolutely riveted for the entire running time. I can't think of 4F for Freaks: Miss Corkers Revenge single movie in history like this one, and I've seen some real corkers! The opening musical number, using an old recording of the song "Some Of These Days" as a background track, is eye-poppingly brilliant. I still don't know how it was done, certainly not with the skills and technology of a low-budget filmmaker in But it speaks to me on an unconscious level, dark and brooding yet fanciful and jolly the slick dancing butler who appears out of nowhere is one of the most delightfully ridiculous and satisfying surreal moments I've seen in years.

  • Super-Heroes of the Orchestra
S u p e r - Heroes of the Orchestra TEACHER GUIDE THIS BELONGS TO: _________________________ 1 Dear Teachers: The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra is presenting SUPER-HEROES OF THE SYMPHONY this year to area students. These materials will help you integrate the concert experience into the classroom curriculum. Music communicates meaning just like literature, poetry, drama and works of art. Understanding increases when two or more of these media are combined, such as illustrations in books or poetry set to music ~~ because multiple senses are engaged. ABOUT ARTS INTEGRATION: As we prepare students for college and the workforce, it is critical that students are challenged to interpret a variety of ‘text’ that includes art, music and the written word. By doing so, they acquire a deeper understanding of important information ~~ moving it from short-term to long- term memory. Music and art are important entry points into mathematical and scientific understanding. Much of the math and science we teach in school are innate to art and music. That is why early scientists and mathematicians, such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Pythagoras, were also artists and musicians. This Guide has included literacy, math, science and social studies lesson planning guides in these materials that are tied to grade-level specific Arkansas State Curriculum Framework Standards. These lesson planning guides are designed for the regular classroom teacher and will increase student achievement of learning standards across all disciplines. The students become engaged in real-world applications of key knowledge and skills. (These materials are not just for the Music Teacher!) ABOUT THE CONTENT: The title of this concert, SUPER-HEROES OF THE SYMPHONY, suggests a focus on musicians/instruments/real and fictional people who do great deeds to help achieve a common goal.

Film Score Blogs by Bill Wrobel Monday, October 4, 2004 at 8:04 pm [Blog # 5] I went to the chiropractic this morning at 8 am. He said I am doing very well with my neck (I had a bike collision with a car door in late May!) after over a dozen sessions, and I won’t need to return until October 20 (my day off). My lawyer is handling the setup with the chiropractor while my medical plan pays for $26 for each session. Then I went to Office Depot to purchase some #19 thin rubber bands, Sharpwriter # 2 pencils, and a Scotch tape dispenser. Then I went up the street to Del Taco and bought a Veggie Works for myself and an egg & bacon quesadilla for my wife. She was awake when I returned home, appreciative of the mini-breakfast (she likes the taste of bacon!). Of film music research interest this morning, I also phoned Bob at Paramount Studios Music Library to see if I can finally get a chance to research Herrmann’s The Man Who Knew Too Much on Friday. I tried last year during a vacation week but he was too busy with studio work. This time he indicated that it may be possible! I’m to phone him early on Friday to see what the status is and to also arrange to get me on the lot (thru the Studio guard!). So I am keeping my fingers crossed! I’ve been trying for some years now (once a year or every two years), and now may be the right timing.
