It seems there is one topic on everyone’s mind this spring, the weather! I can’t remember a longer stretch of cold, wet weather than what we have been experiencing so far this year. Here’s hoping Mother Nature will cooperate and finally give us some seasonable weather.

Parking is always free for non-travelers when visiting the café! News from the Sealer of Weights and Measures-Jane Zulkiewicz

Barnstable Weights and Measures provide an important check and balance. We assure that the rights of the customer are protected from deliberate fraud or unintentional error, and further serve to protect the business owner. We do this in a variety of ways by testing the accuracy of many devices that are used for trade as determined by that device. Once the inspection proves the device is accurate a seal is adhered to the device ensuring it is functioning properly.

As the weather gets better, inspectors will be out testing and certifying the accuracy of motor fuel meters at gas stations, marinas, boat yards, airports, sand and gravel yards and at some oil companies who sell for trade to construction companies. Fuel is measured in cubic inches and does not give much room for error for compliance. Most tests are conducted in a five gallon test standard or prover. A reading of +/-6.0 cubic inches (in³) is the maximum for a meter that has been in service for over 60 days. This equates to 3.3 fl.oz. as the maximum the customer can receive or be shorted at a five gallon delivery. If this reading is not achieved at the time of inspection, the inspector will calibrate the meter to bring it close to zero which is optimal.

Inspectors have a check list they follow to complete the inspection. Those are: checking for a current motor fuel license, hose condition, proper petroleum stickers, leaks at fittings or meter, display clarity, prices on pumps and if available street signs, money values, security tape for tampering, skimmers, pump numbers and overall condition. Last year, 1,527 motor fuel meters were tested and certified as accurate with 117 calibrations made to optimal output efficiency.

Barnstable Weights and Measures conduct all their inspections with uniformity at all locations in the 10 towns we serv e. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the performance of a commercial weighing or measuring device used for trade, bring it to the attention of the merchant. If the problem is not resolved, contact the local Weights & Measures office for adv ice and/or assistance. The9 Barnstable Weights & Measures jurisdiction includes; Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Harwich, Mashpee, Orleans, Sandwich and Yarmouth.
