This dataset adds many new taxa to previous analyses, especially among the non-salticoid salticids, as well as two new genes – wingless and myosin heavy chain. Both of these genes, and especially the better sampled wingless, confirm many of the relationships indicated by other genes. -

Rajoria* SGB Amravati University, Amravati-444602 [email protected]; [email protected] *Indraprastha University, Delhi; [email protected] ABSTRACT Spiders comprise one of the largest (5-6th) orders of animals. The spider fauna of India has never been studied in its entirety despite of contributions by many arachnologists since Stoliczka (1869). In the present paper, we provide an updated checklist of spiders from India based on published records and on the collections of the Arachnology Museum, SGB Amravati University. A total of 1686 species of spiders are now recorded from India. They belong to two infraorders, Mygalomorphae and Araneomorphae, 60 families and 438 genera. The list also includes 70 species from Karakorum. The spider diversity in India is dominated by Saltisids followed by Thomisids and then Araneids, Gnaphosids and Lycosids. Key words: India, Araneae, spider fauna, checklist. INTRODUCTION The pioneering contribution on the taxonomy of Indian spiders is that of European arachnologist Stoliczka (1869). Review of available literature reveals that the earliest contribution by Blackwall (1867); Karsch (1873); Simon (1887); Thorell (1895) and Pocock (1900) were the pioneer workers of Indian spiders. They described many species from India. Tikader (1980, 1982), Tikader, and Malhotra (1980) described spiders from India. Tikader (1980) compiled a book on Thomisid spiders of India, comprising two subfamilies, 25 genera and 115 species. Of these, 23 species were new to science. Descriptions, illustrations and distributions of all species were given. Keys to the subfamilies, genera, and species were provided. -

The present species is recorded for the first time since its original description 129 years ago. Spiders from 58 families, 340 genera and 1238 species are precinctive in India. However, there is an urgent need to revise all these species. Thereafter, the work of Sundevall (1833); Walckenaer (1841); Blackwall (1864, 1867); Simon (1864, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1892, 1893, 1895, 1897, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1905, 1906); Frauenfeld (1867); Thorell (1868, 1891); Stoliczka (1869) O. P.-Cambridge (1870, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1877, 1885 , 1890, 1892, 1896); Butler (1873); Wood Mason (1877); Keyserling (1890); Walsh, (1891); Peckham & Peckham (1895); Pocock (1895, 1899, 1900, 1901); Leardi (1901, 1902); Strand (1907, 1912); Hirst (1909); Narayan (1915) Gravely (1915, 1921, 1924, 1927, 1931, 1935); Chamberlin (1917); Hogg (1922), Hingston (1927); Sherriffs (1927); Mukerjee (1930); Reimoser (1934); Caporiacco (1934, 1935); Bhattacharya (1935); Roewer (1942) and Fage (1946) initiated the spider research during British India. These workers reported 408 spider species from India which are endemic to India. Later on, spider research was geared up in India from 1962 by the work of Tikader (1960-1991), Gajbe (1975-2008), Biswas (1984-2004) and Patel (1972-2005) who reported more than 500 spider species precinctive in India. -

Abstract The genus Hasarius Simon, 1871, is revised following methodology recommended by “Pragmatic classification” of Prószyński (2017). Structure of the genus is insufficiently known, containing at present single cosmopolite species and a few of uncertain congeners. The paper introduces the following nomenclatorical corrections: Hasarius adansoni: Jastrzebski, 2010b: 321, f. 1, 4-5 (female only) = Hasarius tropicus Jastrzebski, 2010 - correction of identification. Species: kweilinensis Prószyński, 1992, orientale Zabka, 1985, dactyloides Xie, Peng & Kim, 1993 listed variably in combinations with generic names Habrocestum, Habrocestoides, Hasarius and Chinattus seem to be misplaced in these genera and deserve transfer to own new genus. Qualification of 6 species of Hasarius as "nomina dubia" by the WSC (ver. 18.5) after Roewer's (1954[1955]: 1523-1524) is changed to "pending revision" because of existence of preserved type specimens. Synonymy of the genera Gedea Simon, 1902 and Meata Zabka, 1985 proposed recently by Maddison (2015) without published documentation are not recognized here until proof will appear printed. Mating plug formation in Argyrodes flavescens is reported for the first time. It is noted that spider species from Pathiramanl Island bear affinities with Oriental and Palearctic regions.
