Jorginho, Personalità E Classe Degne Del Pallone D'oro: Il numero 8 è il fulcro del centrocampo dell'Italia: sempre attivo, mai in difficoltà e sempre pronto a ragionare, senza farsi prendere dall'ansia 07/07/2021 Il buon Campionato Europeo finora disputato dalla bella Italia plasmata dal CT Roberto Mancini ha messo in luce (qualora ce ne fosse stato ulteriore bisogno) Jorginho, autentico "fulcro" del centrocampo Azzurro. Nato in Brasile (per la precisione a Imbituba, nello Stato di Santa Catarina) il 20 dicembre 1991 ma residente nel Bel Paese dall'età di 15 anni, Jorge Luiz Frello Filho (queste le sue generalità all'anagrafe) veste la maglia dell'Italia dal 2016, dopo essere diventato cittadino italiano il 2 ottobre 2012 per iure sanguinis (in quanto avente avi originari della cittadina vicentina di Santa Caterina di Lusiana). In Nazionale vanta finora 34 presenze e 5 reti (tutte su calcio di rigore), una delle quali a suo modo storica, in quanto consistente nella prima marcatura realizzata dall'Italia in Nations League: quella del definitivo 1-1 del confronto casalingo con la Polonia, disputatosi a Bologna il 7 settembre 2018. Tornando all'attualità, la stagione che sta per andare in archivio ha visto il numero 8 azzurro (soprannominato "il professore" e presente in tutte le gare giocate dall'Italia in questa rassegna continentale) conquistare la Champions League fra le fila del Chelsea, disputando da protagonista la finale vinta per 1-0 in quel di Oporto al cospetto del Manchester City, venendo inoltre inserito nella formazione ideale stagionale della manifestazione. Il "bottino" dell'annata 2020-'21 di Jorginho è completato da 28 presenze (con 7 reti realizzate) in Premier League, 2 in Coppa d'Inghilterra (FA Cup), una in Coppa di Lega Inglese e 12 (con una marcatura all'attivo, su calcio di rigore al 28' di Chelsea-Krasnodar 1-1 dell'8 dicembre 2020) in Champions League. Rigorista designato della Nazionale Azzurra (cinque reti su cinque tentativi, che diventano sei su sei contando il tiro di rigore trasformato nella semifinale al cospetto della Spagna), Jorginho è il vero e proprio fulcro del centrocampo dell'Italia: sempre attivo, mai in difficoltà e sempre pronto a ragionare, senza farsi prendere dall'ansia. Il tiro di rigore col quale ha proiettato gli Azzurri all'atto conclusivo di Euro 2020 è l'esempio lampante di ciò: un penalty trasformato con una personalità, una freddezza, una serenità e una classe straordinarie, a spiazzare il portiere con una finta che, parafrasando il buon José Altafini (anch'egli brasiliano d'origine italiana, poi naturalizzato italiano), si potrebbe definire "da pagina 94 del Manuale del calcio". Non è, quindi, esagerato pensare a Jorginho quale possibile Pallone d'oro, premio finora assegnato a cinque giocatori italiani: Omar Sivori (italo-argentino) nel 1961, Gianni Rivera nel 1969, Paolo Rossi nel 1982, Roberto Baggio nel 1993 e Fabio Cannavaro nel 2006. STREET SOCCER Street soccer, pick-up game, sandlot soccer or a kick-about whatever title you give to the format the idea is to give the game of soccer back to the players. Past generations learned to play the game on their own with other kids in the neighborhood or at school in these kid organized games. Today youth sports are overly adult controlled and influenced. It’s difficult today for youngsters to have a pick-up game since the streets have too many cars, the sandlot now has a mini- mall on it and parents are reluctant, with good cause, to let their child go blocks away from home on Saturday to play in a game on his or her own. Street soccer is a way for soccer clubs to give the game back to the players in the community. Once a week, or whatever frequency fits the circumstances the best, a club can have organized spontaneity. The club will provide the fields and supervision. Adults will be on site for safety and general supervision, but otherwise it is all up to the players to organize the games. The adults should NOT coach, cheer, criticize, referee or in any other way involve themselves in the game. The best bet for parents is to drop off their child, go run some errands, and then come back to pick up your child an hour or two latter. The coaches are on site NOT to coach, but to supervise, be on hand for any serious injuries and any severe discipline problems. Additionally the coaches are there to provide the game equipment and to let the players know when each game segment starts and stops.

Reflections on the World Cup JAIME RAMIREZ In 2018 the World Cup will be held in Russia and the buzz around the world is one of ecstasy, particularly for young countries that qualified for the first time, like Iceland and Panama. With World Cup fixtures, the Netherlands and the United States, failing to qualify for the final stage, there is talk of major change in both federations. The United States, in particular, had been mak- ing important strides in recent Cups, making it to the second round routinely. This setback will undoubtedly make U.S. Soccer come to terms with the real- ity that major changes need to be made in order for the team to return to the world stage, especially as the U.S. has submitted a joint bid (with Mexico and Canada) to host the 2026 World Cup. Recently, I heard a network announcer ask his colleagues, “Do you remem- ber the first World Cup that you saw?” It was interesting to hear recollections on what is generally recognized as the greatest sporting event on earth. Here are my own earliest recollections, and how they have shaped my life. The first World Cup that I watched was the 1966 event hosted by England (the last one televised in black and white). The Cup introduced me to “El Rey” Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) from Brazil, the “Black Panther of Mo- zambique,” Eusebio from Portugal, and the Charlton brothers, Jackie and Bob- by, from the eventual winner England. I remember sitting on the living room floor of our house in Mexicali and hearing the announcer continually mention the name “Charlton.” As days went by and England advanced, it dawned on me that there were two Charltons, Bobby and Jackie—gradually, I was able to distinguish between the brothers.

The inaugural edition, held in 1930, was contested as a final tournament of only thirteen teams invited by the organization. Since then, the World Cup has experienced successive expansions and format remodeling to its current 32-team final tournament preceded by a two-year qualifying process, involving over 200 teams from around the world. The first official international football match was played in 1872 in Glasgow between Scotland and England, although at this stage the sport was rarely played outside Great Britain. By 1900, however, football had gained ground all around the world and national football associations were being founded. The first official international match outside the British Isles was played between Uruguay and Argentina in Montevideo in July 1902.
