Dhamma Setu 533 Pazhamthandalam Road, via Thiruneermalai Road, Thirumudivakkam, Chennai – 600 044 Tel: 91-44- 24780953 Email: [email protected] ; Website: www.setu.dhamma.org Dhamma Setu, meaning 'Bridge of Dhamma', is situated amid paddy fields and open farmland on the outskirts of the major South Indian metropolis of Chennai (formerly Madras), about 10 kms from the Chennai Airport. The 18 sq acres of land, previously used for rice cultivation, was purchased from 1991 onwards. The long and painstaking process of making the plot suitable for construction bore fruit in May 2000 with Goenkaji’s visit in September of the same year, when Dhamma Setu was formally established. Since the inauguration, continuous development and extensive landscaping have progressed. Currently the Centre can accommodate 96 male meditators and 48 female meditators in spacious double-occupancy rooms, all with attached baths and solar-heated hot water facilities. Besides the Principal Teacher's residence, rooms for male assistant teacher and for two female assistant teachers are available. The large dining hall accommodates over 200. The main Dhamma Hall of the centre can seat 120 meditators, and is surrounded by shaded walkways, lush gardens, coconut palms, and open green expanses. Two additional halls have a capacity of 75 meditators each, and a mini Dhamma Hall can seat 30. Construction of the circular, three-tiered pagoda that crowns the Centre is slated for completion by Dec. 2005, and will provide 150 cells for an ideal meditation environment. Since January 2005, 10-day courses are being conducted on a bi-monthly basis. The comfortable facilities are well suited for executive courses. With the completion of the pagoda complex this year, Dhamma Setu could also become a suitable site for conducting long courses and be more deeply involved in the spread of Dhamma in South India..

In spite of the district’s top-notch status in terms of high educational, human development index and humungous industrial productivity, given its geography, climate and certain other socio-political attributes, the district administration and its people have to co-exist with the probabilities of hazards like floods, cyclone, Tsunami, drought, heat wave, lightning and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies. The Disastrous events in the recent past like the Tsunami of 2004, the catastrophic floods of year 2015, the cyclone of year 2016 and most recently the COVID-19 pandemic, will serve as a testament to the district’s vulnerability to such hazards. How the society responds to such vagaries of nature decides the magnitude and intensity of the destruction that may entail hazardous events. It is against this back drop, the roll of the District Disaster Management Authority can be ideally understood. The change in perspective from a relief- based approach to a more holistic disaster management approach has already begun to gain currency among the policy makers due to its substantial success in efficient handling of recent disasters across the globe. The need of the hour, therefore, is a comprehensive disaster management plan which is participative and people-friendly with the component of inter- departmental co-ordination at its crux.

The algae identified in the chosen water tank were found to belong to the class Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Some pollution indicating algal species were noticed as Ankistrodesmus falcatus , Chlamydomonas , Oscillatoria, Phormidium, Pandorina morum , Chlorella, Euglena, Phacus Gomphonema, Navicula, Nitzschia, Cyclotella meneghiniana , Synedra ulna and Melosira granulata . The Biological indices of water quality of all the seasons were determined using appropriate statistical methods to assess the trophic status of the temple water tank. Pollution status of the temple tank was determined using Boyd’s index (1981) and organic pollution indictor by Palmer’s Pollution Index (1969). The trophic status of the water body was calculated by Nygaard trophic status (1969). The survey of the temple tank was also taken using Digital Terrain Model (DTM). The temple tank, acts as water conservation structures, apart from their traditional purpose. By limiting the exposure, this aesthetic tank can be used properly for generations.
