A molecular phylogenetic analysis of rDNA was performed for seven Caloplaca, seven Xanthoria, one Fulgensia and five outgroup species. Phylogenetic hypotheses are constructed based on nuclear small and large subunit rDNA, separately and in combination. Three strongly supported major monophyletic groups were revealed within the Teloschistaceae. One group represents the Xanthoria fallax-group. The second group includes three subgroups: (1) X. parietina and X. elegans; (2) basal placodioid Caloplaca species followed by speciations leading to X. polycarpa and X. candelaria; and (3) a mixture of placodioid and endolithic Caloplaca species. The third main monophyletic group represents a heterogeneous assemblage of Caloplaca and Fulgensia species with a drastically different metabolite content. We report here that the two genera Caloplaca and Xanthoria, as well as the subgenus Gasparrinia, are all polyphyletic. The taxonomic significance of thallus morphology in Teloschistaceae and the current delimitation of the genus Xanthoria is discussed in light of these results. Collantes Díaz 2 RESUMEN En el presente trabajo se investigó la Caloplaca saxicola (Hoffm.), recolectada cerca de la laguna de Chinchaycocha (Carhuamayo - Cerro de Pasco), a una altitud de 4100 msnm. A 240 gramos de muestra, se sometió a una extracción acetónica por maceración; se procedió a separar diversos componentes del extracto, empleando la cromatografía en columna, con el sistema cloroformo-acetona aumentando la cantidad de acetona; luego, las fracciones obtenidas se purifican empleando técnicas cromatográficas y recristalizaciones. Finalmente, se elucidaron y se determinaron las estructuras de los sólidos obtenidos, analizando sus espectros de IR, RMN H1 , RMN C 13 y EM; éstos son: ácido úsnico y parietina. LICHENS AT ASCENSION BURIAL GROUND AND IN STREETS TO THE NORTH A survey by Mark Powell and the Cambridgeshire Lichen Group, 19th November 2017 Attended by Jon, Mark, Paula, Phil, Sam, Serena [email protected] A website devoted to the taxonomy of fungi (including lichens) is being developed in collaboration with the Natural History Museum and Kew Gardens. Images and micrographs of most of the species found in Cambridge are available there. See for example: http://fungi.myspecies.info/all-fungi/myriospora-rufescens Ascension Burial Ground, TL435.597 Our Group last visited this small cemetery almost exactly six years ago. (See Appendix A for the previous report). The cemetery seems rather neglected, with large evergreens shading quite significant portions of the site, the grass rather rank, and ivy encroaching onto some of the memorials. All three factors are potentially deleterious to the lichen communities. If any particularly notable lichens were present, it would have been worth contacting the managers of the site and pushing for more effective management. If some entrepreneurial inventor could develop a small autonomous mower that could tackle the intricate work of cutting around memorials, they might make a fortune (it is time- consuming and expensive work for humans, even with motorised machinery). Even better if such a robotic mower could also collect the cuttings and be programmed to cut at different heights and to leave a percentage uncut, to simulate grazing regimes on sites where keeping livestock is not practical). The lichens are heavily browsed by molluscs, so for example Lecanora polytropa on the side facing the camera is reduced to rather featureless roundels, the apothecia poorly developed and semi-immersed in the scanty thallus. -

New species and new records of American lichenicolous fungi. – Herzogia 16: 41–90. A total of 153 species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from America. Five species are described as new: Abrothallus pezizicola (on Cladonia peziziformis, USA), Lichenodiplis dendrographae (on Dendrographa, USA), Muellerella lecanactidis (on Lecanactis, USA), Stigmidium pseudopeltideae (on Peltigera, Europe and USA) and Tremella lethariae (on Letharia vulpina, Canada and USA). Six new combinations are proposed: Carbonea aggregantula (= Lecidea aggregantula), Lichenodiplis fallaciosa (= Laeviomyces fallaciosus), L. lecanoricola (= Laeviomyces lecanoricola), L. opegraphae (= Laeviomyces opegraphae), L. pertusariicola (= Spilomium pertusariicola, Laeviomyces pertusariicola) and Phacopsis fusca (= Phacopsis oxyspora var. fusca). The genus Laeviomyces is considered to be a synonym of Lichenodiplis, and a key to all known species of Lichenodiplis and Minutoexcipula is given. The genus Xenonectriella is regarded as monotypic, and all species except the type are provisionally kept in Pronectria. A study of the apothecial pigments does not support the distinction of Nesolechia and Phacopsis. The following 29 species are new for America: Abrothallus suecicus, Arthonia farinacea, Arthophacopsis parmeliarum, Carbonea supersparsa, Coniambigua phaeographidis, Diplolaeviopsis -

ZHURBENKO 1 ABSTRACT. – Ninety-four species of lichenicolous and allied fungi are reported from the Northwest Caucasus. Nanostictis caucasica on Parmelia sulcata is described as new to science. A presumably new ascomycete with hairy apothecia growing on Thamnolia vermicularis is described but not given a formal name. Acremonium pertusariae, Arthonia destruens, Cercidospora cf. rinodinae, Endococcus sendtneri, Lichenochora inconspicua, Lichenodiplis anomala, Rhizocarpon cf. ochrolechiae, Roselliniopsis tartaricola and Thelocarpon cf. sphaerosporum are newly reported for Asia and Russia, Polycoccum hymeniicola is newly reported for Russia. A first verified occurrence of Dactylospora tegularum in Russia is reported. Dactylospora athallina and Zwackhiomyces kiszkianus are reported new to Asian Russia. Cercidospora verrucosaria, Cornutispora ciliata, C. lichenicola, Dacampia hookeri, D. rufescentis, Didymocyrtis consimilis, Lichenochora caloplacae, Lichenostigma chlaroterae, Merismatium nigritellum agg., Monodictys fuliginosa, Pronectria erythrinella s. l., Scutula epiblastematica, Sphaerellothecium araneosum, Sphinctrina leucopoda, Stigmidium pseudopeltideae, S. squamariae and Tetramelas phaeophysciae are reported new to the Caucasus. Lichenochora caloplacae is reported for the first time from outside the Arctic. An unusual intrahymenial parasite of Lecanora pulicaris similar to Rhabdospora lecanorae is discussed. Bryoplaca is reported as a new host genus for Merismatium nigritellum agg., Cetrelia for Cornutispora lichenicola and Echinothecium reticulatum, Flavoparmelia for Cornutispora ciliata, and Pseudevernia for Lichenoconium cargillianum. A synopsis of 248 species from 98 genera of lichenicolous fungi and three species from two additional genera of allied fungi so far known from the Caucasus is presented and analyzed. -
Lichen Inventory of Pinnacles National Monument Final
LICHEN INVENTORY OF PINNACLES NATIONAL MONUMENT FINAL PUBLIC REPORT December 12, 2003 A Project of the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program San Francisco Bay Area Network Prepared by: Shelly Benson, Rare Plant Biological Technician and Lichenologist Point Reyes National Seashore Modified (3/21/05) by: Jennifer Bjork, Inventory Coordinator San Francisco Bay Area Inventory and Monitoring Network Program ABSTRACT In 1997, when the San Francisco Bay Area Network parks began identifying knowledge gaps relating to park resources, lichens were recognized as an important and poorly understood ecosystem component of Pinnacles National Monument (PINN). In January 2003 funding was awarded through the Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) program to conduct a lichen inventory of PINN. The three week long field component of the inventory produced 419 collection specimens, comprising 202 species in total. One hundred and twenty-nine of these species were first recordings for the Monument and 21 are rare in California. The discovery of two new occurrences of the Globally Rare Texosporium sancti-jacobi (TESA), a critically rare lichen, brings the total for the park to six. Additionally, range extensions were documented for two of the existing TESA occurrences. The data mining effort uncovered 241 specimens collected from PINN, comprising a total of 164 species. Ninety-one of these species were not captured by the inventory. The current number of species on PINN’s lichen species lists stands at 293 (up from 93 before this study). A complete reference collection was compiled for PINN and the remaining specimens are housed at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. In addition, a database was created for this project that meets I&M standards. -

ZHURBENKO ABSTRACT. – A total of 141 species of lichenicolous fungi, 12 lichenicolous lichens, and 94 biogeograph- ically interesting non-lichenicolous lichens, mainly from the Russian Arctic, are reported and many are discussed. Corticifraga fusispora sp. nov. (on Peltigera), Odontotrema japewiae sp. nov. (on Japewia), and Opegrapha pulv- inata var. placidiicola var. nov. (on Placidium) are described from Russia. Dactylospora rinodinicola is reduced to synonymy with D. deminuta. New to North America: Didymellopsis latitans, Epilichen glauconigellus, Polycoccum bryonthae, Psora elenkinii, Stigmidium solorinarium, and Unguiculariopsis refractiva.
