RESULT FOR THE YEAR 2014-15

Our College secured excellent results at B.A, B.Com, B.B.A, B.C.A & B.S.M degree examinations conducted by Goa University in April 2015. Out of 241 students who appeared for the exams from the B.Com stream, 180 passed, the passing percentage being 74.69% .08 students secured distinction and 68 students secured first class. Out of 98 students, 84 students passed at the T.Y.B.A degree examination, the passing percentage being 85.71% out of which 13 students secured distinction and 28 students secured first class. Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA Course) for the academic year 2014- 2015 secured 100% result at TYBCA Semester VI with 11 Distinctions and 08 First Class, B.B.A students passed out with flying colors with 91.66% passing percentage. Out of 30 students 29 students passed at the T.Y.B.S.M degree examination, the passing percentage being 96.67% out of which 02 students secured distinction and 18 students secured first class.

COLLEGE COUNCIL

The activities of the college council for the academic year 2015-16 started with the holding of the general elections with the university elections. The College Council under the chairmanship of shri. Ashish M Joshi conducted election for the college election as well as university election for the post of Class representative, Secretaries, ladies representative and university class representatives from all the streams on Thursday 30th July 2015. Mr.Oscar Travasso T.Y.B.A was elected as the General Secretary, Ms.Debangana Ghosh of T.Y.B.Com was elected as the ladies representative, Mr.Carl Figueredo of F.Y.B.Com was elected as the Debating Secretary, Mr As’ad Shah of T.Y.B.A was elected as the literary secretary and Ms.Shweta Thapa of F.Y.B.A was elected as the sports secretary.

Election for the post of University class representative (UCR) was also held on the same day, following were the results stream wise.

The elections for the post of University Faculty representative (UFR) were held on Friday, 7th August 2015. Mr.Tabish Sayed of B.Com stream, Mr.Shubham Sakhlekar of the Arts stream and Mr.Ramu Rathod from the B.C.A stream were elected.

The first meeting of the college council was held on 14th August 2015 to decide upon the date of inauguration of the college council and to also decide upon various activities for the odd semester.

The newly constituted College Council for the academic year 2015-16 was inaugurated on Tuesday, 25th August 2015 at the hands of Shri.Narayan Navati, Joint Chief Electorate Officer, Govt. of Goa. All the elected members of the council were felicitated by the chief guest and were administered oath of allegiance on this occasion.

The college council organised fresher’s party to the first year students on 4th nSept 2015 in Swami Vivekanand Hall, various events like singing, group dance, on the spot events and Mr & Ms fresher were held. The program was followed by high tea to the fresher’s.

On 5th Sept 2015 the college council celebrated teacher’s day in the seminar hall which included an entertainment program by the students, students expressed their feelings on this occasion, the program concluded with high tea to the staff.

The second meeting of the college council was held on Tuesday 1st Dec 2015 in the seminar hall to plan the activities of the even semester which included fun week, annual social gathering, annual prize distribution and farewell function to the outgoing final year students.

The annual fun week was organised from 16th to 18th Dec which included various cultural events, competition, novelties onstage plus some off stage events were organised.

ASSOCIATION OF ART & CULTURE

The college believes in all round development of the students as goal of education. It aims to provide rich cultural experiences so that student appreciates the multi cultural diversity of the society. Various cultural events and activities provide an excellent platform for students to express and develop their individual skills. The events are organized keeping in view the students, faculty collective interest of talent exhibition. Arts & Culture association report highlights various inter- collegiate and inter class activities, events organized by the association have been detailed below: 1. All-Goa Inter-collegiate Patriotic Singing competition (22nd August 2015) Shree Damodar College of commerce and economics, Comba, Margao-Goa had organised All-Goa Inter-collegiate Patriotic Singing competition on 22nd August 2015 in two different categories: Solo & Group. Ms. Debangana Gosh and Ms. Geneve D’Souza & group participated in solo and group singing respectively. Participation certificates were awarded to the students. 2. Panjim Youth Club “Inter-Collegiate Dance competition” (29th August 2015) Panjim Youth Club had organised inter collegiate competition at Dinanath Mangeshkar, Kala Academy , on 29th August 2015. Solo dance & group Dance categories were held for which Mr. Vijay Naik and Mr.Suraj Kanpur & group participated respectively & won second (2nd) place for group dance. Participation certificates were handed over. 3. Inter class Ghumat-Arti & Rangoli Competition(15th September 2015)

Ghumat Arti competition was held on 15th September 2015 in the seminar hall. All together 5 classes participated namely, F.Y.B.Com, F.Y.B.A, S.Y.B.A, S.Y.B.Com and T.Y.B.Com. F.Y.B.Com won the first place while second place was won by F.Y.B.A class. Rangoli competition was also held for students of college on different themes, active participation was shown by students and prizes were won at individual level. 4. Inter-Collegiate & Higher Secondary School Dance Competition (14th December 2015) Inter-Collegiate & Higher Secondary School Dance Competition was organised by Fr. Agnel High School, Pilar-Goa, on 14th December 2015. A group of students were deputed for the competitions. Students were awarded with certificate for participations. 5. GURU- SRUJAN- Art Festival for Teachers at All –Goa level (1st December 2015). Art festival for teachers at all goa level an Innovative concept initiated by Mr. Bhaskar Nayak, The Director of higher education was organised by S.S.Dempo College of commerce & Economics, Altinho, Panaji – Goa at Taleigao Community Centre on 1st December 2015. Various events such as Ice breaker, Singing, Boasting, Ad-Mania, group Dance, Fashion show, treasure hunt, photography, games, rangoli and package designing were held. Around 17th teachers (Faculty) participated at the event. Mr. Gorak Sirsat faculty of department of Konkani won 3rd place for photography. Participation certificates were given at the end of the event.

6. State Youth Festival 2015 Directorate of Sports and Youth festival Affairs, Panaji –Goa, organised District Youth festival at Ravindra bhavan Canacona on 4th and 5th December 2015 & XIV State Youth Festival 2015 at Ravindra bhavan Fatorda – Goa on 16th December 2015. Various events such as Folk Dance, Folk Song, table, guitar, flute, bharathanatyam, kathak Elocution, rangoli and one Act play were held at district level on 4th & 5th December at Canacona.

A group of student’s team was deputed along with faculty member Mr. Aquib Sayed, Asst. Professor in Commerce & Member of Art & Culture Association accompanied Students for the above competitions. College participated in almost all the events and won prizes in events. Mr. Yogesh chodenkar stood 2nd place for table competitions, Ms. Divya Bhar won 1st place for Kathak, Mr. As’ad Shah won 2nd place for Elocution, while Ankita Vasant Fadte & group won 3rd place for Folk Song.

XVI State Youth Festival at state level was held on 16th December, while the participants who had won prizes were shortlisted to perform their respective acts at final state level competitions. Mr. Yogesh chodenkar won 2nd place for table competitions while Mr. As’ad Shah could manage to win 3rd place for Elocution competition at state level.

7. Annual Social Gathering 2015-16 ( 21st December2015) Annual Social Gathering was held on 21st December 2015 in the college quadrangle. Various competitions /activities were held for students in groups as well as at individual level. Competition such as Solo singing, duet singing, group singing, solo dance, group dance, fancy dress, mimicry and monologue were held. Special Screening of activities was done on 19th December 2015 and only best acts were finalized for final gathering.

All together 41 items/Events were finalized and schedule was prepared. 10 students participated for solo singing, 7 pairs participated for duet singing, 2 groups participated for group singing, 11 students participated for solo dance, 6 groups participated for group dance, 4 participated for fancy dress, while only 1 student participated for monologue event.

Top three (3) positions were awarded with certificates and cash prizes in every category.

Rs. 500,300 & 200 cash prize was awarded respectively for 1st, 2nd & 3rd positions. Prizes were handed over at the hands of Principal and Vice Principal at the valedictory.

DEBATING ASSOCIATION i) Inauguration of the debate club: The debate club was formed under the Association of Debating with the view to inculcate and develop public speaking skills among students. The club was inaugurated on 10th August 2015 by the hands of the chief guest Mr. Ashfaq Shah, Manager-Workforce Management and MIS and business consultant from Vasco. ii) Elocution competition: Following the inauguration of the debate club on 10th August 2015; an elocution competition was conducted on the topic, ‘India’s Missile Man’ to remember and honor the sacrifices that our late president Dr. A.P.J. Kalam made in his service to our nation. iii) Public Speaking Classes: To follow up on the initiative to inculcate and develop public speaking skills among students, we began conducting weekly public speaking classes. The club membership is currently at 40 members. The classes involved discussing the importance of public speaking and power that it can bring to individuals, watching videos of famous orators and debates and learning their art through discussion and practice. The classes also involved self-help exercises to overcome the fear of public speaking that many members expressed at the beginning.

iv) Practice Debate: The debate club organized two Practice Debate session for the debate club members on the topics ‘Ban on Pornography’ and ‘Capital Punishment’ on 28th August and 18th September 2015 respectively.

An Inter-Class Debate Competition

v) An Inter-Class Debate Competition: An Inter-Class Debate Competition was organized on the topic ‘Award Wapsi’ on 10th December 2015. Six teams were selected for the final date. An Elimination round was conducted prior to the finals.

Competitions Participated by our students for the academic year: 2015-16 i) The student from our institution namely Ms. Saynax D’Souza and Ms. Rudrani Tirodkar participated in an all Goa Inter college Quiz competition titled ‘Budvont Goemkar’ organized by Prudent Media, a local TV channel in Goa on 3rd and 5th August, 2015. ii) In collaboration with Maxxcell Institute of Professional studies Pvt. Ltd; the association of debate organized for the conduct of the elementary round of a Quiz ‘Intelligence Quest’ on 17th July 2015. Of the 133 students that participated in the elementary round, 15 students from our institution were short-listed for the finals. Ms. Neema Kumari from B.Com and Mr. Akshay Pednekar from BBA secured the third place at the finals of ‘I Quest 2015’. iii) Our institution deputed four students namely Ms Debangana Ghosh from B.Com Semester V, Mr. Fazer Gonsalves from BBA Semester V, Mr. Aslam Shaikh from B.A. Semester I and Mr. Ajin Kishan from BBA Semester V for the Indian International Model United Nations Conference at the Indian International Model United Nations chapter Goa 2015. The conference was held from 4th to 6th September 2015. iv) Our students, namely Ms. Ruksana Shaikh and Mr. Aslam Shaikh from B.A. Semester I participated in a contest ‘Leaders of India’ organized by the Sardar Patel Foundation at GVM’s College Ponda on 9th and 10th September 2015.

8 v) Our students, namely Ms. Aarti Belani from B.Com Semester I and Mr. As’ad Shah from B.A. semester V participated in a debate competition organized by television for environment, difficult dialogues and South Asia Centre of London School of Economics at Goa University held on 9th December, 2015. vi) Our students, Mr. Prashant Tawde, Mr. Shivanand Raikar, Mr. Sheldon Esquire and Mr. Nikhil Janathan from B.Com. Semester-VI participated in debate on “Should sex-education be implemented in schools” organized by NSS Unit of M.E.S. Higher Secondary School on 4th December 2015. Mr. Prashant Tawde & Mr. Sheldon Sequiera won the debate. vii) Our students namely Ms. Rudrani Tirodkar, Ms. Rekha Baramani, Mr. Prakash Baramani, and Mr. Shakeel Shaikh from B.Com Semester VI participated in a quiz competition ‘Biz Quest 2016’ organized by Dempo College of commerce and economics on 6th January 2016.

REMEDIAL TEACHING REPORT OF REMEDIAL COACHING SCHEME UNDER UGC XII PLAN 2015-2016

It is indeed a great pleasure to present the report of the Remedial Coaching Scheme of the UGC under XI plan in the college during the academic year 2015-16 for the students of both Arts and Commerce streams. The scheme which is meant for remedial coaching to the underprivileged students especially belonging to SC, ST, OBC and minority category was also extended to the General Category students.

Under the UGC XII Remedial Coaching Plan, Free Remedial coaching classes were conducted for the Academic year 2015-16 for the students of BA/B.Com belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Minorities/Physically Challenged and students belonging to General Category below poverty line. The Remedial classes commenced from July 2015 and are presently continued in 2016. Teachers engaged remedial classes for the students after 1.00 pm in subjects where they have difficulties. Students who have difficulties in any subject avail of the remedial coaching. The students who registered under remedial coaching scheme were also provided the Remedial book bank scheme through library.

The committee left no stone unturned this year too to make this scheme successful in the college during the academic year 2015-2016. After chalking out the strategies and programmes to execute the scheme and extend special coaching facilities to the needy students, the members of the committee made it a point to personally meet the students and create awareness about the objectives and benefits of the scheme. Accordingly, the awareness sessions were held by the members of the committee by visiting all the classes and then enrollment for the scheme was completed. Parents were also sent letters by post regarding enrolment of their wards for free remedial coaching.

Remedial Coaching XI Plan- UGC Scheme 2015-16 1) Registration of students for the classes by filling the Remedial forms along with relevant documents twice a year in the month of July/August 2015 and December 2016. 2) Identification of teachers and selection of teachers to assign remedial teaching. 3) Preparation of time table for the implementation of the scheme 2nd week of July and the subjects. 4) Orientation of students about the Remedial scheme by visiting all the classes. READERS CLUB

Inorder to felicitate reading habits in students, the readers club has been constituted by the college. Dr. Cidalia Bodade is the chairperson of the club. Students are given an extra library card if they are members of the Readers club.

 Padma Shri & Jnanpith awardee Shri. Balachandra Nemade, creative writer, literary critic and teacher inaugurated the Readers’ Club of the College on 08 Aug. 2015.

SPORTS

Inter Class Competition: The Department of P.E. & Sports had organised Inter Class Badminton for women and Football for men. In Football FY BA (A) were crowned winners where as SY BCom had to settled for Runners up. In Badminton FY B.Com

Inter Collegiate Competition: M.E.S. College has participated at various competitions organised by Goa University and other Colleges. Below mentioned are the achievements by the students as a team and as an individual:

1. Miranda Steffi from TYBA won Bronze medal at Inter Collegiate Judo women Championship organised by Goa University.

2. MalaginimaniVenkatesh(FY BA), MallahRavindra (TYBA), RathodRamu (TYBCA) and KasarSagar (FYBA) won Bronze medal in their respective categories at Intercollegiate Men Taekwando Championship organised by Goa University.

3. Patil Basangouda, KankonkarTejasvi (FY BA) won silver medal at Inter-Collegiate Taekwando

Championship in their respective section and categories.

4. Rajput Vijay won Goal medal in his respective weight category at Intercollegiate Men Taekwando Championship organised by Goa University.

5. Landez Myron from F B.Com won Silver and Bronze Medal in 400m and 200m respectively at Inter-Collegiate Athletic organised by Goa University. He was also the member of 4*100m Relay.

6. BepariTanveer won Silver medals in 200m & 100m Run respectively. He was also the member of 4*100m Relay team which won Bronze medal.

7. Bind Suraj from FY BA won Silver medal in 10000m run.

8. LamaniShivraj from FY BA won Bronze medal in 4*100m Relay.

9. GosaviTejas from SY BA won Bronze medal in 4*100m Relay.

10. Mast. TanveerBepari was selected to say the Sportsman’s oath at the Inter Collegiate Athletic Championship by Goa University

State Level Competition:

Suraj Bind from FYBA won 1st place at Excitement Marathon organised by Sada Association. Besides this he also won 2nd place at half marathon race in Goa Section organised by Goa River Marathon Association. He also stood 4th at U+21 men 24km marathon organised by Catholic Association of Goa. He also won 2nd place at All Goa Maralize race.

National Level Competition:

1. Mast. Landez Myron won Gold, Bronze and Silver Medal in 4*400m Relay, 400m and 4*100m Relay respectively at 27th West Zone Junior Athletic Championship 2015 at Ajmer, Rajasthan.

2. Kefira Rodrigues from FY B.Com participated at South zone women Table tennis Championship held at Chennai. She also participated at All India National Table Tennis Championship held at Dharamshala.

3. Mast. DheerajYadav and YogeshNaik (FY B.Com) represented Goa Cricket Association at All India U-19 Boys Cricket tournament organised by BCCI. DheerajYadav also participated at All India U-23 men’s Cricket tournament organised by BCCI.

4. Ajay Kumar Kewat (TYBA) and YogeshNaik (FY B.Com) represented Goa University team at West Zone Inter-University Men Cricket tournament.

5. Pranita Korgaonkar (SYBA), MadhuGiri (SYBA), Monica Saroj (S.Y.B.Com) & Shivleela Bajantree (TYB.Com) represented Goa University at West Zone Inter-University women Cricket Championship 2015-16.

6. PranitaKorgaonkar&MadhuGiri were the part of runners up team at 26th Senior Women National Tennisball cricket championship held at Fatehpur, UP.

Team Championship

 Men’s Taekwondo team were crowned 2nd runners up at Inter Collegiate men taekwondo Championship organised by Goa University.  Men’s Cricket team was runners up at intercollegiate cricket tournament 2015-16 organised by V.M. Salgaonker College of Law.  Individual achievement – Mast. DheerajYadav from FY B.Com was the Best bowler of the said tournament.  Mast. HemantOli was Best batsmen of the tournament he also received two man of the match awards at same tournament.

National Workshop College Dir. Of P.E. & Sports Mr. Shailesh G. Chodankar attended National workshop on “Yoga for Health and Peace” organised by Rosary College of Commerce & Arts – Navelim on 6th – 9th January 2016.

XXXX Annual Athletic Meet 2015-16 XXXX Annual Athletic Meet of the college was held on 23rd December 2015 at S.A.G. Chicalim Ground. Chairperson Vasco Municipal Council and ex-student of MES College Mr. Deepak Naik was the Chief of Opening Ceremony and he unfurled the college flag and inaugurated the meet. In his address he spoke about various Govt. schemes available for sportspersons and also motivated satudents to take part in Sports. Principal Dr. R.B. Patil, manager of the meet Shri. B.S. Ingallhali, Chairperson of Sports Advisory Committee and organizers Secretary of the meet

Shri.SandeepKadam and College Dir. of P.E. & Sports ShriShaileshChodankar were present at the Inaugural function. ShriShaileshChodankar introduced the Chief guest where as welcome address was given by Prinicipal Dr. R.B. Patil, Prof. B.S. Ingalhalli gave vote of thanks. Oath was read by Ms. AkshataGanguliker from FY B.Com and the prayer by Sports Secretary Miss ShwetaThappa.

As the part of Annual Athletic meet various track and field events were held. SY B.Com-D were crowned as the best March Past team, the overall championship in Athletic event was won by FY BA (A). The individual championship for men and women was won by BepariTanveer from (SY B.Com) and ShimpyYadav (TY B.Com) respectively.

At the valedictory function Chief guest and former College Dir. Of PE & Sports expressed his happiness over the emerging talented youth in field of Sports from M.E.S. College. The Chief Guest was introduced by the manager of the meet Shri B.S. Ingalhalli. At last vote of thanks was given by Shri. ShaileshChodankar followed by lowering of the flag, which was handed over to the Chief Guest and then to the Principal for safe custody.

WOMENS CELL (JYOTI)

The Women Centre (Jyoti) under the chairperson of Asst Prof. Gouri K. Manerkar and her team members Asst. Prof. Valarie Pereira, Asst. Prof. Ishwari Kalangutkar and the elected ladies representative Ms. Debangana Ghosh had organised the following activities for the academic year 2015-16.

1) Inter Class Poster Making Competition The Women Centre (Jyoti) of M.E.S. College of Arts & Commerce, Zuarinagar, Goa organised interclass Poster making Competition for the girl students of the college on 31st August 2015 on the theme “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao”. This competition was organised mainly to highlight the importance of a girl child. Around 20 students had participated for the competition. 2) Inter Class Fugdi and Garland making Competition On the eve of Ganesh Chaturti, the Women centre (Jyoti) organised interclass fudgi and Garland making competition on 14th September 2015. A total number of 24 and 28 students respectively participated in the competition. The Women cell in association with Arts & Culture had also organised creative Eco-friendly Ganesh Idol making competition 3) Ladies week held from 16th December 2015 to 18th December 2015 The ladies week was organised for the girl students during the fun week from 16th to 18th December 2015 from 8:30 to 10:30am in the college premises . The following competition was organised during the ladies week such as –dress me up(product packaging),spread the light(Christmas candle decoration),mirror on the wall

(mirrior design),it’s a popsicle world(popsicle stick art),rangoli and dressing of hair accessories. There was overwhelming response from the student, the principal appreciated the student for their participation in various competition. Students had put up stall such as-quelling, earning, homemade eatables, during the ladies week. This activity was done for the first time where students made attempt to sell their things and earn marginal profit. 4) Short Term courses held from 2st to 7th November The Women’s cell of the college had also organised short term courses for the girl students of the college during the Diwali vacation so as to enable these students to develop their own skills. Courses such as Varli painting, Quilling and Flower Making. CAREER GUIDANCE CELL

1. The Government of India has launched Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana ( PMKVY ). This will be the flagship scheme for skill training of youth to be implemented by the new Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship through the National Skill Development Corporation ( NSDC ). The scheme will be implemented through NSDC training partners.One of the training partner by the name of FINPLAN had approached our college to train all students nta(BCOM, BA, BBA, BCA). Ms. Anisha Khilnani, director, Finplan visited our college to orient the students about the details of the course. The Career Guidance Cell facilitated this orientation programme by escorting her to the various classrooms where she addressed the students of all streams. 2. Members of the Career Guidance Cell accompanied 50 students to attend the inauguration of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana ( PMKVY ) launched by the Government of India at Kala Academy on 15th July 2015 from 3.30 pm to 6 pm. The chief guest for the inauguration was Deputy Chief Minister, Shri. Francis D’souza. A live telecast of Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi’s speech from New Delhi was shown to the students. 3. Shri. Gajendrababu, a Chartered Accountant and Mr. Manish Tailong of J.K. Shah classes conducted orientation programme on “ Careers in Chartered Accountancy” for BCOM Sem I,II III and IV from 8.15 am to 10.30 am on 16th July 2015.

4. Asst. Prof. Dattaprasad Shirgurkar, faculty Department of Political Science of our college gave a talk on “ Civil Services (UPSC) examinations” to the students of our college . The session was open for all the streams of our college. The lecture received overwhelming response and 119 students attended the talk. He spoke on the Indian Administrative system and career opportunities available to successful candidates. He gave an overview of the UPSC exams, recruitment procedure, pattern of the exams and the paper, IAS ,IPS IFS, IRS exams, their syllabus etc. he also informed the students books and magazines to be referred. The session was followed by question answer session. 5. The Career Guidance Cell has started an innovative concept of “Career Options And Higher Studies Open To Students” studying in the various streams and various subjects in our college. To this end the committee members have collected data of compiling the data of career options and higher studies open to students from respective departments in the college. This data is put together in a booklet form and a file is kept in the library for the scrutiny of the students. Students can get first hand information and valuable guidance on the future avenues open to them. 6. A talk on BANKING EXAMS was organized by Career Guidance Cell on 7th December 2015 in room no. 19 at 12.15 p.m. Shri. Joe Figueredo of C.J. Academy was the resource person for the talk. 68 students of third year BA,BCOM, BBA and BCA attended the talk. After a brief introduction of the guest speaker the session began. Shri. Figueredo gave a brief overview of the Indian banking industry. He spoke briefly on the history of banking in India, types of banks and their names, foreign banks and the future of banking in India. He then spoke about banking exams, recruitment process, types of exams, minimum qualification for answering clerical and probationary level exams. He discussed the pattern of the paper etc. Lastly he ended with a word of encouragement to the student to take such exams seriously and told that there is no substitute for hard work.

7. The career guidance cell of MES College of Arts & Commerce, Zuaringar Goa organized a session for the third year BA/BCOM/BBA/BCA students of the college which was conducted by Maxxcell Institute of Professional Studies Pvt. Ltd. The session was organized on 8th December 2015 at 12.15 pm. 35 students attended the talk. The talk was on CAT/XAT/GRE/GMAT/study abroad counseling. Mr. Tarun Anand of Universal Business School was the resource person for the session. He spoke on the topic “ Winning is a Game of Inches and Seconds”. He covered the following aspects in his session: how to become a global CEO, how to win in the corporate world, how a pitch and timeline can change your career trajectory, how to deal with international markets and how risk taking is a must for high growth strategy. The session was a good exposure to students desiring to do MBA after their graduation. 8. The Career Guidance Cell of M.E.S College of Arts and Commerce,Zuarinagar – Goa organised an informative session on career counselling conducted by Zeal Institute of Business Administration, Computer Application And Research, Pune. The session was held on 14th December 2015 in room no. 19. At 12.15 p.m. The resource persons for the session were Prof Rajesh Kumar Kashyap and Prof.Ashish K.Vyas from ZIBACAR, Pune. There were a total of 42 students from third year B.A/B.Com/BBA/BCA. At the onset management activities and games were conducted to reinforce the pre- existing ideas about career in the minds of the students .A presentation was done on the theme ever changing world. Students were also given an aptitude test to answer. The session included information on clearing entrance exams conducted by university of Maharashtra which will expand the scope of taking admission in professional institutes in Goa or Maharashtra. It also helped the students to understand the facilities provided by the government regarding free ships and scholarships.

Talk by Zeal Institute, Pune. 9. Tendolkar Academy, Margao gave a talk on “Careers in Accounting and Taxation” on 5th January 2016. Mr. Chetan Tendolkar and Mr. Dhruv Dedhiya who run the academy were the resource persons. Initially they visited all the FY, SY and TY BCom classes as well

as BBA and BCA classes where they gave a brief talk to the students on this topic. They also informed the interested students to attend their session at 12.15 p.m. in room no. 19. At 12.15 p.m. a session was conducted by them wherein they informed the students about the “Certificate Course in Accounting and Taxation” conducted by the academy. 41 students attended the session. 10. American Culinary and Cruise Line Academy, Margao gave a talk on “Career Guidance in Cruise Line and Culinary” on 7th January 2016 in room no. 27 at 11.30 am. The resource person was Mr. Parikshit Fondekar, Director, Operations, ACCLA. 20 students from BA- travel and tourism and TYBCOM attended the talk. At the onset Mr. Fondekar discussed the cruise business world wide. He explained the hierarchy in a cruise liner F & B department. He explained the merits of working in a cruise liner. He then spoke of ACCLA, its various courses, both short term and long term. He spoke about the benefits of culinary courses offered by the academy, their fee structure and the career opportunities in cruise liners.

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME NSS

Following Activities were conducted by NSS unit of our College:

1. Celebration of International Day of Yoga

The N. S. S. Unit of the college started the new academic year by organising a session of yoga on 21st June, 2015 to celebrate the International Day of Yoga. Twenty N. S. S. volunteers and five programme officers participated in the event which was held at 07: 30 am in the Seminar hall of the College premises. The yoga was performed within the 33 minutes duration as a part of common yoga protocol NSS voluteeers along with NSS P.O’s. performing Bhramri pranayam. 2. Inaugural of NSS activities in M. E. S. 3. Talk on Organ Donation

The N. S. S. Unit of the college organized a talk on “Organ Donation” in collaboration with Lions club, Mormugao, on 13th August 2015. The speaker on the occasion was Dr.Amol Ramesh Mahaldar. 130 NSS volunteers participated in the talk which was held at 2.00 p.m. in the Seminar hall of the College premises.

4. Awareness on Narcotics

The NSS Unit of M. E. S. College of Arts and Commerce, Zuarinagar in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of the Government of India organised a talk for the NSS volunteers on the ill-effects of drugs and their hazardous impact on the youth community on 01st July, 2015. 130 NSS volunteers participated in the talk. The resource person for the talk was Mr. Jeetendra Ranjan, Superintendent, Narcotics Control Bureau, Sub Zone Goa. The one-hour talk-cum-presentation presentation was interspersed with images, videos, examples and personal experience of dealing with drug addicts and their families and discussed the kinds of drugs, symptoms of those under the influence of drugs, economic and psychological costs of drug abuse, statistics of drug-related deaths, and watch list for parents and teachers to identify and check drug addicts. Two personnel from the Narcotics Control Bureau, Mr. Vijay Shinde, Intelligence Officer, NCB and Mr. Mohit Sehrawat, Constable, NCB were also present on the occasion.

5. Competitions held on 15 August, 2015 in M. E. S. College of Arts & Commerce on the occasion of Independence Day

The NSS Unit of MES College conducted the following competitions to mark the celebration of Independence Day (15th August, 2015).

a) Patriotic Singing Competition: A patriotic group singing competition was conducted for the NSS volunteers. 100 NSS volunteers participated in the competition. The judges were Shri. V.V.Sail, Vice Principal, Dr. Sandhya Bhandare, Senior faculty and Asst. Prof. Aniket Shetye.

b) Poster Competition: A poster making competition on the theme, “Spirit of Freedom” was conducted for the NSS volunteers. 57 NSS volunteers participated in the competition.

c) Elocution Competition: An Elocution competition on the theme, “Spirit of Freedom” was conducted for the NSS volunteers. 06 volunteers participated in the competition.

6. International Youth Day

NSS unit of MES College participated in the celebration of International Youth Day on 19th August 2015 organized by Goa State AIDS control Society at Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee indoor stadium in Goa University campus. A total of 38 NSS volunteers accompanied by NSS P.O. Shri. Dattaprasad Shirgurkar attended the program from 09:30 am to 01:00 pm. The function was graced by Union Minister for AYUSH Shri. Shripad Naik, Chief Minister of Goa Shri. Laxmikant Parsekar, Deputy Chief Minister of Goa Shri. Francis D’Souza and Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs Shri. Ramesh Tawadkar, Government of Goa.

The organizers and the dignitaries spoke on the importance of Youth and created awareness against AIDS. Two children from Bangaluru suffering from AIDS shared their experience and tried to convince that a person suffering from AIDS can live a normal life and can make significant achievements in public life. A separate technical session was organized for NSS Program Officers from 02:00 pm to 05:00 pm to create awareness about AIDS and Drug Trafficking.

7. Talk on Career Guidance

The NSS Unit of M. E. S. College of Arts and Commerce, Zuarinagar, organised a talk on Career Guidance for the NSS volunteers on 26 August, 2015. The resource person for the talk was Dr. Honey

Kalaria, a Bollywood choreographer, dancer and artistic director. The talk-cum- presentation was interspersed with images, videos, examples and personal experience of Kalaria in dealing with her career and tackling various issues that comes in one’s aspirations and dreams.

8. Talk on Road Safety Awareness

The NSS Unit of M. E. S. College of Arts and Commerce, Zuarinagar in collaboration with the Directorate of Transport, Government of Goa organised a talk on Road Safety Awareness on the occasion of “05th Goa State Road Safety Week” for the NSS volunteers in the Meeting hall of the College Campus on 28th August, 2015. The resource person for the talk was Mr. Jack De Souza, Senior Motor Vehicles Inspector, Traffic Bureau, Goa. 150 student volunteers were present for the awareness talk. Three personnel from the Traffic Bureau, Mr. Francis Quadros, Senior Motor Vehicle Inspector, Mr. Dattaprasad Naik, Asst. Motor Vehicle Inspector and Mr. Shivanand Pednekar, Asst. Motor Vehicle Inspector were also present on the occasion.

9. Talk on Decision making, Empathy and Stress Management NSS Unit of MES College successfully organised talks on the topic Stress Management, Decision Making and Empathy on 4th September 2015 between 2.00pm – 5.00 pm in the Seminar Hall of MES College. More than 150 NSS Volunteers participated in the talk. NSS P.O. Incharge Sanjeev K Shirodkar delivered the welcome address.P.O. Bhiku V. Bhave and Dattaprasad Shirgurkar introduced the resource persons. JC Asfaq Shah spoke on stress management and decision making and JC Sudesh Goankar spoke on Empathy. Both the sessions were very informative and interactive. NSS P.O. Dr. Susan Deborah proposed the vote of thanks. 10. Talk on Leadership The NSS Unit of M. E. S. College of Arts and Commerce, Zuarinagar in collaboration with JCI-Dabolim organized a talk on Leadership for the NSS volunteers in the Meeting hall of the College Campus on 14 September, 2015 between 03: 30 and 04: 30 pm.

The resource person for the talk was Mr. Rohan Bandekar, JCI trainer. The talk-cum- presentation was interspersed with images, inspirational quotes and examples drawn from real life. 100 student volunteers and four NSS Programme Officers, Ms. Sveta S. Desai, Dr. S. Susan Deborah, Mr. Dattaprasad Shirgurkar and Mr. Bhiku Bhave were present for the talk. Mr. Ganesh Lamani, President, JCI-Dabolim was also present on the occasion.

11. Rally on Road Safety A rally on road safety awareness was organized by the N.S.S unit of MES College in collaboration with JCI Daborlim on 15th September 2015. Around 300 NSS Volunteers. The rally began from MES College to Zari area and back. The students carried educative placards and shouted slogans to sensitize people about the importance of driving slow, driving without alcohol, wearing the helmet and seat belt while driving.

12. Blood Donation Camp The NSS Unit of M. E. S. College of Arts and Commerce, Zuarinagar in collaboration with Lions Club of Cortalim and Blood Bank Goa Medical College organized the blood donation camp on 24th September 2015 where in 82 units of Blood was donated.

13. Regular Campus Development Activity N.S.S volunteers undertake campus cleaning as part of a regular campus development activity.

14. Paper and Cloth Bags Collection NSS Volunteers of all the six NSS units together collected around 2500 paper bags and 700 cloth bags. 15. Celebration of Gandhi Jayanti Day NSS Volunteers of all the six NSS units together collected 20 sacks of plastic bags full of plastic as a part of Shramdan followed by felicitation of less privileged members of the society.

16. 3 Day Meditation- based Self Development Programme 3 days Meditation-based Self Development Programme was organised for NSS volunteers of our units in association with U-Connect, Shri Ram Chandra Mission, Goa, India. 83 NSS volunteers took the benefit of the programme. 17. 7 days NSS Special Camp The 7 days NSS Special Camp of NSS Unit of our College was held at Shree Damodar Saunsthan, Zambaulim-Quepem, Goa from 02/11/2015 to 08/11/2015. 139 student volunteers participated in the Camp. Many Socially useful activities were carried out in the village such as a. Cleaning in and around the school & Temple premises and bus stop adhering to the spirit of Swaach Bharat mission, b. Distribution of cloth & paper bags to the villagers and shops in and around the village. c. Anti plastic rally d. Plastic Collection drive was carried out in the village wherein 36 gunny bags of plastic was collected e. Socio economic survey of village f. A Trek was organised for NSS volunteers with the objective of sensitizing volunteers towards preservation and conservation of Nature. g. Free Medical camp for villagers h. Cultural programme for villagers

20. Goa River Marathon 2015 The NSS unit of M.E.S College of Arts & Commerce, Zuarinagar was part of organising team for Goa River Marathon 2015 organised by Vasco Sports Club Vasco, Goa. 141 NSS Volunteers participated and they were divided into various teams as per the requirement like Hydration, Medical, Traffic Control, Refreshment Etc. The event was organised on 13/12/2015. All Volunteers reported at 3.30 am in the morning as SAG Chicalim. NSS programme Officer Ms. Shveta S. Desai and Shri Bhiku V. Bhave were present for the event. NATIONAL CADET CORPS: NAVAL WING

Naval NCC unit of MES College of Arts and Commerce started its training activities for year 2015-2016 with is active participation in International yoga day celebration organized by DG NCC, New Delhi at Margao on 19 June 2015. Regular parade training started from 4thJuly 2015, unit has enrolled total 50 cadets of its full strength.

Success of our NCC unit began with getting good results of 85% in B certificate examinations where in 4 of our cadets achieved A Grade and remaining 4 got B grade.

Main highlight of our unit Achievements is feeding maximum of 16 cadets for preliminary nausainik camps held at Udupi. After the going through screening in preliminary camps one of our cadet Angad Prajapati represented state of Goa in National Nau-sainik Camp at INS Kadamba, Karwar organized by DG NCC.

Another highlight is that two cadets of our college PO cadet Shabanam and PO cadet Prakash Singh were selected from Goa to participate in NATIONAL SAILING REGATTA at INS Chilka, Orissa. These cadets were also selected on the basis of their sailing skills exhibited at selection level camps held at Mysore. We are proud of these cadets.

Two of our cadets’ Suresh Jalihal and cadet Abdul Jhangi participated in NATIONAL INTIGRATION CAMP held at Madikere (COORG) of Karnataka and won the second prize in group singing competition.

Beside these professional achievements our Naval NCC unit is actively participated in social service activities like tree plantation, cleanliness drive in and around college premise. Unit is also planning to arrange the blood donation drive in this month of January. Naval unit of NCC is always in the forefront to give the Guard to the National Flag on National Festival days like 15 August, 19 December and 26 January of 2015-2016.

As a concluding part of the training this year 8 cadets will be appearing for C certificate examinations and 12 cadets are appearing for B certificate examinations

NCC 1 GOA GIRLS BN REPORT

NCC 1 Goa Girls BN of our college attended ATC (Annual Training Camp) from 24th Dec 2015 to 2 Jan 2016 at Vidya Prabodhini School Porvorim. All together nine Cadets participated. The Cadets won First place with Gold medal for Drill Competition and excelled in cultural activities i.e. Group dance and solo dance. CDT. Shimpy Yadav (T.Y. B.com D) and CDT. Nazneen Kazi (F.Y.B.com) were selected for Guard Of honour.

4 Cadets answered ‘B’Certificate Examination on 14th Feb 2015 and successfully cleared the examination.

CDT. Shimpy Yadav was selected for NIC (National Integration Camp)held at Madikeri Karnataka on 25th Oct 2015 to 6th November 2015 and won first place and trophy for Group song competition.

NCC ARMY COMPOSITE WING

The enrollment of cadets for this year was held on 07th July, 2015.52 boys and 28 girls were selected and enrolled. The combined Annual Training Camp was held in Parye from 24th Dec, 2015 to 2nd Jan, 2016. Nine cadets of our college attended this camp and participated in various competitions. Our girl cadet Manisha Prasad won first place in Cross Country race, Cadet Shreya Singh won the second place in Cross Country race, we also won second place in Kit layout, group song, and solo dance. We won Third place in Drill, Quarter guard, and group dance. Our cadets have also participated in the centrally organized camps and done extremely well at various levels and they are Cadet. Shri V.R. Shirgurkar, Former Principal, Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science delivered a talk to the faculty on NAAC accreditation with special reference to the teaching- learning process on 12th March 2016.

A team of teachers visited DMs Bandekar College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Mapusa on 27th April 2016 so as to study the following aspects: Innovations in teaching-learning process, Conduct of ISAs , Automation, Internal academic audit, Mentoring system, Student progression, Post-graduate courses, Functioning of alumni association, Criterion-wise perspective plan, Best practices and activities of Research Cell.

The institutional feedback from parents was obtained in December 2015 and an analysis was made of the same.

RESEARCH CELL

The Research Cell organized a state-level workshop on ‘Writing Research Papers and Drafting Research Proposals in Social Sciences’ organized by the Research Cell on 29th & 30th March 2016. Prof. Pranab Mukhopadhyay, Department of Economics, Goa Univeristy, was the Chief Guest for the inaugural function of the workshop. Dr. Purshottam Bung, Director, KLS’s

Institute of Management Education and Research, Belgaum, Dr. Poornima M. Charanthimath and Dr. Shashidhar G. Chiniwar were the resource persons for this workshop.

The objectives of the workshop were as follows: 1. To promote and encourage research 2. To sensitize young faculty on research methodology 3. To enable faculty to draft research proposals and write research papers by identifying the research problems The workshop comprised of six sessions, namely, 1. Session I: Identification and Formulation of Research Problem 2. Session II: Research Design and Methodology 3. Session III: Sources of Data Collection 4. Session IV: Literature Review 5. Session V: Drafting Research Proposals 6. Session VI: Structuring Research Papers A total of about 60 faculty members from 7 colleges across the state participated in this workshop.

It is the pleasure to present the report of Department of Commerce

 Result for B.com Semester V for the academic year 2014-15, passing percentage-76%. Distinction-. 08, First Class- 68, Second Class-75 and Pass Class- 23.  B.com Sem I Commerce Student, Mr. Carl Figueredo topped at the CA-CPT (Chartered Accountant Common Proficiency Test) in Goa held in June 2015.  TALLY 9 certificate course was conducted by Prof. Swati Shigaonkerfor the BCOM students in the month of August 2015. 12 students successfully completed the course.  The Department is conducting coaching classes for entrance exam for Chartered Accountancy (CPT) under the co-ordination of Asst. Prof. Atmaram Tarpe  The Department also conducting coaching classes for entrance exam for Company Secretary (Foundation) course under the co-ordination of Prof. Safal S. Narvekar. Two student, Mr Abhishek and Ms Nafiya have cleared the C.S Foundation course in one attempt. The Department organised various activities such as.

1. COLLAGE COMPETITION was organised on 31st July 2015 for B.Com Semester I. No. of students- 150 students participated in the contest (30 teams consisting of 5 members each). Five themes viz, Digital India, Swachh Bharat , Swachh Goa, Skilling India- New Entrepreneur, MAKE IN INDIA- Manufacturing Hub, Media –Killing Corruption or Creating chaos and Save Girl Child were given to the students.

2. Created awareness among B.com students about various books/ journals/ magazines and other course material related to commerce are available in our college library through orientation in respective classes. 3. Two students namely Shaik Shakil and Baramani Prakash were deputed for Inter – Collegiate Commerce Quiz Competition held on 31st July 2015. 4. Organized “CAREER LITERATURE EXHIBITION WEEK” for all the B.Com students between 6th August to 13th August 2015 in the Commerce Lab of College. The career literature exhibition was basically to create awareness about the future career options.

5. Two B.com Sem V students namely Nema Kumari and Rudrani Tirodker selected for “BAP- Exec” Online Skill Building Course, for 60 hrs. duration by E-Palmleaf, Bangalore. 6. A talk on C.A Professional (CPT) Course on 17th August 2015 organised. The talk was delivered by the Shri Shilpesh Naik – Chartered Accountant, Vasco and Mr. Ankit Dube – (present student). 7. ‘INNOVERTISING COMPETITION’ was organized for B.Com Semester III students on 29th August 2015. A total of 95 students participated in the contest wherein 19 teams consisting of 5 members each participated in the competition.. The Competition was of “Presentation of Innovative skill in Advertising a product or service”.

8. A 5 day programme on “Change in mindset” (CMS) was conducted by Department of Commerce under the co-ordinatorship of Nodal Officer Prof. Sanjiv Shirodkar from 7th to 12th September 2015. The CMS Programme is the outcome of MOU signed by MES College with GCCI, I-create India. 14 students from B.com & B.A participated in the programme. 9. The Commerce Association organized an ANNUAL STUDY TOUR from 14th November to 20th November, 2015 to Goa--Coimbatore-Kodaikanal. A group of 58 thrilled students, accompanied by 13 faculty members took benefit of the tour.

10. The Association conducted a talk on professional course “Cost and Management Accountancy” by Shri Rammohan Menon (ICMA) on 11th December 2015 for B.Com Semester IV & VI students.

11. A talk on Professional Body “Company Secretary” was organized by the Commerce Association on 12th December 2015. The talk was delivered by Ms. Swati Hegde (ICSI) for B.Com students.

12. A group of 50 student of B.com course participated at annual event “Phoenix 2016” at Kala Academy – Panjim organised by Saraswat College- Mapusa. Accompanied by Shri Aquib Sayed, Assistant Professor of Commerce. A team of 2 students namely Shivanand Raikar and Sheldon Sequeira won a first place at Business Plan competition even in Advertisement and Dance competition students won 2nd place.

Up Coming Activities 13. Two day National Seminar on “MAKE IN INDIA- India as a Future Global Manufacturing Hub” will be organized by the seminar Department of Commerce, convenor Prof. Safal Suresh Narvekar on 22nd & 23rd January 2016. The seminar is partly sponsored by ICSSR. 14. A Talk on Career Prospects After Graduation will be organized by the Commerce Association in the month of February 2016 .The talk will be delivered by Shri. Rahul Ravikumar, Cineframes. 15. Industrial Visit will be conducted for B.com Sem VI students in the month of January and February 2016. The industries which will be visited are NESTLE, MRF, Sanjeevani Sugar Factory etc. 16. The Commerce Association will be organizing a One Day Youth Event called COMMERCE FIESTA for all the B.com students on 27th February 2016. 17. The Commerce Association will publish Annual Commerce Magazine “C-IGNITE 2” in February 2016.

The Department Of Sociology organised the following activitiesduring the current academic year 2015-2016.

 Inaugural of the activities of the Sociology Study Circle by Dr Shaila De Souza, Incharge, Centre for Women’s Studies, Goa University on 25th July 2015.DR Shaila De souza conducted a session on the theme - ‘Gender Equity’  A photography competition on Social Issues for all the students of the college was held on 31st August, 2015 titled “What the Picture Tells You”  HIV Awareness workshop was conducted for Sociology students by an NGO ‘Human Touch’.  A series of documentary films were screened – ‘Daughter of Darkness’, which deaIs with the issue of prostitution, ‘I am Kalam’ – which is about providing educational opportunities to an illiterate child and ‘Awdaitam’, addresses discrimination based on the caste system.  A guest lecture was organised on the topic‘Paedophilia in Goa’ by Ms.Andrea Fernandes Project Incharge, Human Trafficking.  A guest lecture by Ms.Prachi Prabhu, fellow researcher at Goa University on ‘Speak Against Menstrual Exclusion’.  The Department organised their annual intercollegiate and interclass event Socio – Expressions under the sociology study circle in the month of February, 2016

FACULTY  Dr. R. B. Patil attended the Orientation program on Planning and Management of Higher Education Institutions for Principal of Affiliating colleges organized by Department of Higher and Professional Education, National University of Educational Planning and Administration, Mysore, Karnataka from 5th to 9th October 2015  Ms. Sonal Thakker submitted her Ph.D Thesis entitled “Migration and Family Dynamics in Goa” to the department of sociology Goa University in November, 2015.  She is appointed as a member of board of studies in the subject of sociology at the undergraduate level for a period of three years w.e.f 31/03/2015.

Ms. Gouri Manerkar presented a paper titled ‘Socio-economic Profile of Female Domestic Servants in Vasco Town: Case Study’ at the International Conference on’Issues and Challenges in Commerce, Humanities and Social Sciences’ organized by SSPES’s Goa Multi-Faculty College on 17th and 18th October 2015 at International Centre, Goa. She also presented a paper titled ‘Self Help Group: A Catalyst for Social Inclusion’ at the National Seminar on ‘Social Inclusion- Mainstreaming the Marginalized’ organized by Department of Commerce, SV Sridora Caculo College of Commerce and Management Studies on 27th March 2015. She will be presenting a paper titled ‘Motivating Factors among Women Entrepreneurs in Goa’ at the National Seminar being organized by the Department of Commerce, MES College on 22nd and 23rd January 2016. Ms. Gouri Manerkar attended a short-term course on Research Methodology organized by the Human Resource Development Centre, Goa University from 27th July to 1st August 2015.

Shri Yasser Hussain Razak has registered for Ph.D. at Goa University. He is working on his thesis titled ‘Human Capital and Economic Growth’ ‘under the guidance of Dr. Pranab Mukhopadhyay, Professor, Department of Economics, Goa University.

The Department of Economics has organized the following activities:

1. The inauguration of the Certificate Course on ‘Quantitative Techniques and Basics of Econometrics was held on Monday 10th August 2015. Dr. P.K. Sudarsan, Professor, Department of Economics, Goa University, was the chief guest and resource person. Dr. Sudarsan delivered a lecture on the development and importance of quantitative techniques and econometrics in economic analysis. 2. Dr. Radhika Nayak, Principal, DCTs S.S. Dempo College of Commerce and Economics, Panaji, delivered a talk to all students on ‘Career Options for Economics Graduates’ on 13th August 2015. 3. A Certificate Course on ‘Quantitative Techniques and Basics of Econometrics of 20 hours per semester is being conducted by Asst. Prof. Yasser Hussain Razak and Asst. Prof. Rajesh Shetgaokar. 4. An inter-collegiate essay competition on ‘Goa: The Next Educational Hub of India’ was organized on Monday 24th August 2015. 25 students from 13 colleges participated in this competition. 5. ECOBUZZ 2015, comprising of various inter-class competitions, was organized for the first time from 7th to 12th September 2015 between 1.00pm and 3.00pm. 7. The Department of Economics will be organizing the National-level ECOFEST 2016 on 9th and 10th February 2016. The annual magazine ‘KIRAN’ will be released at ECOFEST 2016.

Activities of the Department of English

 A four-hour Digital Story-telling (DST) Workshop was organized for SY B. Com students on 11 Sep., 2015. DST is part of the curriculum for Business Communication offered to SY B. Com. The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Salil Konkar.  A fun event Fun with Literature aimed at students from schools in and around Vasco to participate and learn about literature was organised on 08 Jan., 2016. Mr. Oscar Gonsalves was the Chief Guest for the event. Eight schools participated.  An International Conference on The Culture of Food will be organised by the Department on 25-27 Feb., 2016.

DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM & TRAVEL

The Department of Tourism and Travel celebrated World Tourism Day on 28th September 2014. In keeping with the theme ‘One Billion Tourist, One Billion Opportunities’, there was a talk on Career and opportunities in Tourism related services. Mr. Raj Nair, Chef, HQ hotel Vasco, was the chief guest and he delivered a talk on Career in Hotel Management especially in the culinary field. Ms. Pamela Mascarenhas , Guest of Honour, also spoke on various Job opportunities and self employment in tourism and travel field.

Students of T.Y.B.A (Tourism & Travel) displayed a fashion show, where they had showcased various segment of jobs in the tourism related field. Students of SYBA had put up a stall where they sold Mocktails like Kiwi Fizz, Blue Hawaiian and Pinacolada and various types of chaats. Dr. Cidalia Bodade (HOD- Tourism & Travel) welcomed the gathering and Ms. Rupali Shetye (Asst. Professor in Tourism & Travel) proposed the Vote of Thanks.

The Tourism students of TYBA participated in “D-Tour” at Dempo College, Altinho, on World Tourism Day.

A career guidance talk by Frankfin was organised in the college. Faculty members of Frankfinn gave a presentation on the short term courses which are conducted in their institution. The FY, SY and TY BA tourism students attended the talk. Another career guidance talk by American Culinary & Cruise Line Academy was organised for TYBA students. Director of ACCLA delivered a talk on various job opportunities in the culinary field on Cruise liners.

The students of Travel and Tourism will go on a tour to Karnataka in the 1st week of March. On 25th, 26th, and 27th February an International Conference on ‘The Culture of Food, Literature and Society will be organised by the Department.

Department of Konkani organised and participated in various activities, competitions and seminars organised by various educational and literary institutions in and outside Goa.

Department of Konkani organised:

1) The department observed 138th Birth Anniversary of Vaman Ragunath Shenoi Varde Walawlikar alias Shenoi Goembab. Sahitya Academy Award winner Shri Prakash Padgoankar was the Chief Guest. While speaking Shri Padgoankar said that, if at all the Konkani language has received the honour and respect it deserved, it is only because of Shenoi Goembab.

On the occassion, Ms. Ashwini Chari, Ex-student of department of Konkani was felicitated for qualifying UGC-NET at the hands of Shri Prakash Padgoankar.

2) The Department of Konkani commemorated the 31st death Anniversary of renowned Konkani poet Padmashri Bakibab alias B.B. Borkar. Eminent Poet and President of Goa Konkani Academy was the Chief Guest. On the occasion students recited and sang beautiful poems written by B.B.Borkar. Speaking on the occasion Chief Guest Shri Madhav Borkar narrated interesting anecdotes of Bakibab’s life, which made it evident that Bakibab’s creativity, intellect and humour led him to be a popular personality in his prime and even now.

On the occasion the department in collaboration with college library had also put an exhibition of Bakibab Borkar’s Books.

Students participation in Seminars:

1) Our students participated in the State level seminar on ‘Konkani Drama and its influence on society’ which was organised by Fr. Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendra,Porvorim held on 12th September 2015. 2) Three of our students namely Reeya Redkar, Sneha Ajgaonkar and Excil Pereira participated in ‘Katha Lekhan: Tantra Ani Mantra’a full day Konkani seminar based on the technicalities in writing short stories. The Seminar was organised by Parvatibai Chowgule College in collaboration with Goa Konkani Academy on 28th November 2015.

Students participated in various competitions:

1) Our student Ms. Arpita Gad, SYBA won the 3rd prize in the 2nd Annual Poetry Recitation Competition organised by Dayanand Kala Kendra, Curchorem in memory of first Chief Minister of Goa Late Dayanand Bandodkar. Master Amresh Bind and Ms. Saynex D’Souza also participated in this competition. 2) Our students namely Shrutika Gossavi, Arpita Gad, Ankita Majik, Pravina Kerkar and Saynex D’Souza participated in 5th All India Konkani Poetry Recitation Competition organised by Kavita Trust, Manglore, held at Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Margao on 4th September 2015.

3) Our students namely Shrutika Gossavi and Sulaksha Kotkar participated in ‘Parmall’, All Goa Konkani Poetry Recitation Competition organised by Guardian Angel Higher Secondary, Curchorem on 26th September 2015. 4) Our students Raksha Salgoankar and Saynex D’Souza have participated in All Goa Quiz Competition organised by Konkani Bhasha Mandal in memory of Late Adv. Arun Singbal on 29th September 2015. 5) Our students namely Shrutika Gossavi and Sulaksha Kotkar participated in the Inter- collegiate Poetry Recitation and Abhang Gayan Competition organised by Govt.College , Khandola, Marcel-Goa on 10th December 2015. 6) Our students namely Shrutika Gossavi, Sweta Naik, Arpita Gad, Sulaksha Kotkar participated in Inter-Collegiate Poetry Recitation Competition organised by Gomant Kala Association on 19th December 2015. 7) A team of 37 students participated in 21st Goa Yuva Mahotsav was organised by Konkani Bhasha Mandal on 12th and 13th December 2015. Students participated in various competitions such as Geet Gaytana, Lokmand, Nach Nach Nachuya, Prasnmachi, Mustayki and Shooting. Ms. Raksha Salgaonkar of FYBA was selected in the final round of singing competition. 8) Three of our students Arpita Gad, Sulaksha Kotkar and Sonali Gawas participated in the Literary Programme ‘Kala Sadhak’ organised by Fr. Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar on 9th January 2016.

 Shri. Satyawan Naik participated in 21st Goa Yuva Mahotsav was organised by Konkani Bhasha Mandal on 12th and 13th December 2015.

 Shri. Satyawan Naik attended a UGC sponsored Refresher course in Languages (Inter-Disciplinary) at Human Resource Development Centre, Goa University from 9th March 2016 to 29th March 2016.

 Prof. Cosma Fernandes presented a Research paper on Konkani Tiatr “Baiyla Boropaiche Yogadhan” at the two days National Seminar on the theme Sarjan ani Anusarjan – Samkaleem Stree Lekhanacher (Contemporary Women Writers) at Vishva Konkani Literary Festival at Mangaluru, Karnataka.

DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE

Political science department of our college conducted following activities under ‘Political Science Association” during academic year 2015-16.

(1) Essay Competition: On the eve of 146th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi an essay competition for the students of Political science on the theme of Gandhian Thought and Struggles was organized on 30.09.2015, five students had participated in this competition and following students Mr. Shubham Sakhalekar, Miss Manoja Naik and Miss Renuka Sagnekar of S.Y.B.A class won first, second and third prizes respectively. (2) Indian Constitution Day Celebration: Political Science Association celebrated Indian constitution Day on 26th November, 2015. Mr. Sayed Abdulla, Associate Professor of Govt. College of Arts and Science, Sanquelim was the Chief Guest and he delivered speech on the importance of Indian constitution. Nearly 200 students attended this function and taken pledge to adhere to the values and ideals enshrined in the preamble to the Indian Constitution. (3) Participation in Student Parliament Competition: Department is preparing students to take part in the student parliament competition organized by Goa Legislative Assembly.

Achievements of Faculty members

Prof. Ashok M. Sambargi (1) Karnataka University, Dharwad awarded Ph.D. degree for Thesis entitled “Theory and Practice of Gandhian Non-Violence” Got distinction marks (72%) in this examination. (2) A book on “Border Dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra” was published.

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

The following are the activities that were conducted in the academic year 2015-16 in the Psychology Department.

 The ‘Certificate Course in Counselling Techniques’ started in July 2015 with an enrollment of 24 students for the said course under the coordinatorship of Ms. Cedila

Gomes. Various resource persons were invited to deliver lectures on Person Centered Therapy, Anger Management, Dance and Music Therapy, Handwriting Analysis, Hypnotherapy etc.

 Moreover, the counseling students who have completed the said course last year have successfully completed a three months internship program with an NGO called Presentation Society in Vasco working with HIV/AIDS children.

 Movie Screening of ‘I am Sam’ and ‘Sybil’ “for Psychology students was conducted by chairperson of the psychology club Ms. Fatima Gomes and Mr. Brian Pacheco for the final year students of BA (Psychology) on 18th July 2015. The movie screening was followed by a discussion on the various aspects of the disorder, its causes and the type of treatment used.  A Community Based program on Music Therapy- was organized for the school students of neighboring schools of Vasco on the 1st of August 2015 with Ms. Aarti Sinha was the resource person.

 Ms Cedila Gomes organized a field visit for the TYBA students to I.P.H.B on the of 28th of August 2016.

 Ms Sheryl Afonso e D’Souza delivered a guest lecture on “Nutrition and Diet’ on the 3rd of September 2015.

 A State level Psychology Festival- Psychozest funded the ICSSR was organized under the co- ordinatorship of Mr. Brian Pacheco on the 11th of September 2016. Ms. Valencia D’Souza was the student co-ordinator. Dr. Amit Dias was the chief guest of the inaugural function while Dr Ravi Agrawal was the chief guest of the valedictory function. A total of 9 colleges participated in this one day event and Chowgule College won the Championship trophy for the second consecutive year.

 Ms Cedila Gomes organized an Educational Field Trip to Dharwad for the students on the 2nd and 3rd of December and visited the Departments of Psychology, Sociology and Criminal and Forensic Sciences at Dharwad University and the Dharwad Institute of Mental Health Sciences. Ms. Fatima Gomes also accompanied the students.

 The Psychology Department organized a three-day 'Canteen Mela' on the 10th, 11th & 12th December 2015 to generate funds for the in-house psychology magazine to be released in March. The teachers in charge of the Canteen Mela were Mr. Brian Pacheco for TYBA, Ms Cedila Gomes for SYBA & Ms. Fatima Gomes for FYBA. The staff and students of the college wholeheartedly supported the event.

 The department organized interclass competitions from 19th January -21st January called Psychobuzz to give students an enriching experience of various issues pertaining to psychology while providing them with a platform to showcase their creativity and talent. The events for on- stage events were Skit, Monologue and Dance while the off- stage events were T-shirt painting, Rangoli and Cartoon Strip.

Achievements of the Faculty:

 Ms Cedila Gomes presented a research paper titled ‘An Assessment of Conflict Management Style, Occupational Stress and Job Satisfaction of Educators’ in a peer reviewed journal , Anushandhan.

 Ms. Maria Fatima Gomes and Mr. Brian Pacheco presented a joint paper titled ‘A gratitude- centered intervention to foster resilience and well being among adolescents’ at the ‘International Conference On Counselling And Psychotherapy: Diversity In Training & Practice’ at Sampurna Montford College, Bengaluru held on 1st & 2nd May 2015.

 Ms. Maria Fatima Gomes attended a UGC sponsored Orientation Programme at Human Resource Development Centre, Goa University from 3rd June 2015 to 30th June 2015.

Future plans :

 A workshop for students and staff –will be organized with Dr Vikram Patel as the resource person and Ms. Fatima Gomes as the coordinator.

 A Dance Movement Therapy Workshop for College students will be held in February under the coordinatorship of Ms. Cedila Gomes.

 The release of Department magazine and the valedictory function of students enrolled for ‘Certificate Course in Counselling Techniques’ will be held in March 2016.

1. Ms. Shruti B. Nayak attended Faculty Development Programme on role of a teacher in enhancing student potential organized by Academic Staff College, - university from 05 /10/15 to 10/10/ 15. 2. Ms. Shruti Nayak attended a workshop on Number theory and Cryptography organized by BITS Pilani, Goa campus from 15/12/15 to 17/12/15. 3. Department of Mathematics and Statistics organized Poster making competition for B.Com semester II and IV students on 10th December 2015. All together 24 students Participated in the competition. There had been an overwhelming response for the Competition.

Field trip conducted on 3/10/2015 to Ecological sensitive areas of Sattari Taluka like Devrai Sacred grooves, Pali waterfall, Bio gas projects, agricultural plantation, the dairy farms at Sri ram Gou Sourakshana Kendra Volpoi. It was a very enriching experience of learning to the students of ecology.

Talk organized on environmental awareness by eminent environmentalist Shri Rajendra Kerekar.

A workshop was also organized on waste management and a water conservation by the resource persons Sabana Khazi and Ashwini Pai Pandikar from TERI organization.

Proposed Activities:

Department also planning another field visit to Government Arboretum Sancordem, Tambdi Surla sites to study the medicinal plantation and the surrounding biodiversity.

In addition to these activities another workshop is planned on application of GIS in various fields of coastal ecology and environmental issues.

Karnataka & Goa secured 5th place at All India National Camp. 9. SYBCA student Mr. Arjun Singh Rathore represented Karnataka and Goa as a member of a delegation to KAZAKHSTAN at international as an army ambassador. He scored all India ranking in top 20 of all India merit list. He also represented whole goa as well as Karnataka and Goa directorate for Republic day Camp held every year in New Delhi.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

The year started with a Faculty Workshop for teachers on 29th June 2015. The workshop was conducted in collaboration with Goa University, department of Management studies. BBA teachers of all the colleges of Goa attended the workshop.

6th July 2015 an oriented program for parents and students of First year BBA was held. The chief guest was Mr. Parag Joshi – MD of Jutex Limited and the Guest of honor was Sneha Bhandari - Managing Partner Nirvana.

On 12th September, 2015 Parent Teachers meeting was held for second and Third year students. Results of batch 2013-14 had cent per cent results. All 34 students passed. We had 33 first classes and 1 second class.

Students Achievements:  Our students participated in ODYSSEY 2015 held by Saraswat College of Commerce & Management Mapusa.  Mr. Gautam Shetty our TYBBA student won the second place for Human Resource and Ms. Tanvi K our TYBBA student won the third place in the Quiz.  Our Second year BBA students attended the IMPRESSIONS 2015 organized by Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim.  Mr. Shreyas Santosh won the 1st place fo Production Management.  A Career Counselling session was organized for the students of TYBBA students and shipping students. Professors from entrepreneurship Development Institute Ahmedabad Gujarat addressed the students on the topic “Why Formal Education is necessary to be a good manager & Entrepreneur”.

The inauguration of BBA (Shipping & Logistics) course for the academic year 2015-16 was on 1st July, 2015. It was held for the parents and students of FYBBA Shipping & Logistics. Mrs. Sonali Singh explained the students and parents the importance and relevance of Shipping & Logistics course. Two eminent personalities from shipping industry Mr. C Dayal and Mr. Sandeep Sood were invited as Chief Guest and Guest of honour.

World Maritime Day was celebrated on 8th October, 2015 on the theme “Maritime Education and Training”. Three eminent personalities from shipping industry Capt. Tarun Gupta – General Manager Samsara Shipping, Capt Robert Vaz – Marine consultant and Mr. Manjinder Singh – Legal and CS south West port Goa were the key speakers for the Event.

There was a Small exhibition by BBA (Shipping & Logistics) students as per the theme Maritime Education and Training.

LIBRARY ANNUAL REPORT

The library has a total collection of 28617 books and subscribes to about 98 periodicals 16 local and National Newspapers. During the year 2015-16, 572 books were added to the library collection. The library provides a book bank facility to the needy and meritorious students. In order to enhance reading habit among students, the library has a reading club where in an extra library card is given to the members for general books reading.
