1959 Nebraska League The 1959 Nebraska State League for HISTORY MAKER BASEBALL Welcome to the 1959 Nebraska State League! This six team league was the final season in the Nebraska State League. Their season lasted 62 games beginning around July 1st and concluding at the end of August. I chose to do this league because the league and the Mc Cook Braves was one of the main subjects in Pat Jordan’s A FALSE SPRING. The NSL was a Class D league, many of the players started their careers here or other Class D leagues. They came out of high school or the colleges. Quite a few players from this league went on to careers in Major League Baseball: Walt Weiss, Elrod Hendricks, Ron Hunt, Jim Hicks, Jim Bouton and future Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro. Enjoy this set. Be forewarned, this is a league filled with prospects and semi- prospects. You will experience lots of walks, strikeouts, and errors; after all, these players were starting out and were “wet behind the ears!” For this season, the freshness rule is as follows: Starters: Fresh for the first 4 innings and then semi-fresh for 3. Relief: 2 innings Fresh and 1 inning semi-fresh. For more information on this league go to the following link: http://www.nebaseballhistory.com/nsl1959.html Pat Jordan’s book is available through Amazon.com. Pat had a decent season with the McCook Braves that year. He did, however, average 7 walks per 9 innings and was wild, like most of the pitchers that season. Edward R. • Rat Hunting: a Baltimore Memoir
Excerpts from: “RAT HUNTING… A BALTIMORE MEMOIR” By Lewis Frisch [email protected] WIRE BOUND COPIES WITH COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR $ 20.00 Rat Hunting: A Baltimore Memoir I. Looking at the sleek prosperity of the Inner Harbor as it expands eastward through the narrow streets of Canton, it is hard to remember back thirty or forty years, to a time when no one would have dared refer to Baltimore as Charm City. Bawlamer, the armpit of the east ; a working class city of neighborhoods that was far too busy to think much about anything beyond hard work, the O’s, the Colts, National Bo and pass me another crabcake, please. Was the town’s biggest attraction “The Block”, a sailor’s paradise of seedy burlesque bars? Probably not, but the idea of Baltimore as an east coast tourist attraction second only to Disney World would have seemed as remote as sending men to Mars. There was beauty to be found, but you had to look for it. Most travelers, driving into the city, or arriving by train were treated to the most depressing of vistas…. row after row of attached houses, huddling low to the ground, in a gray and brown sprawl of urban decay, interspersed with tracts of industrial wasteland climaxing in a waterfront that seemed to cry out for a small tactical nuclear weapon to clean the mess up. Few would ever see the rolling horse farms of Worthington Valley, the vibrant night life of Pennsylvania Avenue, the immaculate ethnic neighborhoods, and the hundreds of touches of beauty and vitality that dotted the urban landscape, just beyond the view of the casual tourist.

Controversy abounded over whether “colored” players had both the ability to play and the ability to be “colored gentlemen.” The rhetoric of race was sometimes based on principle, other times spoken to cover up one’s own questionable actions. The League’s early demise was only partially due to the rampant racial controversy. Finances and contract jumping also played a part. THE LAST SEASON THE LIFE AND DEMOLITION OF BALTIMORE’S MEMORIAL STADIUM A DOCUMENTARY BY CHARLES COHEN & JOSEPH MATHEW WWW.MEMORIALSTADIUM.ORG The Last Season-The Life and Demolition of SYNOPSIS Memorial Stadium, demonstrates the power that one building had over the people of Baltimore. As major sports stadiums disappear from Ameri- ca’s landscape, cities are losing much more than struc- tures that stand for their teams’ glory years. Vanishing are the emotional centers for a working class culture that thrived in the United States during the mid-20th Century. Nowhere was a stadium more vibrant than Memorial Stadium. The Last Season explores the emotional ties and the family history that evolved in these stands for al- most fifty years; and how a generation marked its mor- tality with the passing of its landmark. Built in 1954, Memorial Stadium was the home to the Baltimore Colts, one of the founding dynasties of the National Football League and The Baltimore Ori- oles, a home-grown powerhouse baseball team of the 1960s and ’70s. Despite lacking the architectural cache of a Wrig- ley Field or Fenway Park, Memorial Stadium endeared themselves to Baltimoreans much the same way Brook- lyn once embraced their “bums” the rest of the world called, The Dodgers. But with the advent of Camden Yards, which set the standard for the current trend of new-old ball parks, and the coming of the Ravens football team, Me- morial Stadium was doomed. And yet, although people accepted the stadium’s demise, thousands came back for municipal sales to buy old wooden seats and con- template, the passing of “The World’s Largest Outdoor Insane Asylum.” From the beginning, filmmakers Charles Cohen, a free-lance reporter, and Joseph Mathew, a free-lance photographer, were not interested in putting together a sports nostalgia piece.

  • Rules That Catchers and Plate Umpires Need to Know…
Rules that Catchers and Plate Umpires Need to Know… Know how to Make a Legal Tag The definition of a tag under Pro and NCAA rules is essentially the same. The Pro language reads, "A Tag is the action of a fielder in touching a base with his body while holding the ball securely and firmly in his hand or glove; or touching a runner with the ball, or with his hand or glove holding the ball, while holding the ball securely and firmly in his hand or glove." Sometimes a fielder will tag a runner with an empty glove while holding the ball in his hand. This is not a legal tag. Perhaps the most controversial tag play in World Series history took place in the opening game of the 1970 Fall Classic played between the Orioles and Reds when Baltimore catcher Elrod Hendricks attempted to tag out Bernie Carbo in the sixth inning after Ty Cline hit a chopper in front of the plate. Hendricks collided with umpire Ken Burkhart while "tagging" Carbo with his mitt and holding the ball in his bare hand. The bowled-over Burkhart couldn't see the play and called Carbo out. There have been various interpretations of the tag rule over the years. MLB doesn't have a formal interpretation, only what is covered in the Official Baseball Rules in the definition of terms under "Tag" as outlined at the top of this section. But there are unofficial interpretations. Former ML umpire Joe Brinkman in his 1985 book titled, The Umpires Handbook, accents the duration of the play assessing if a legal tag was made.
