Therefore, an inclusive study on jellyfish was carried out from November 2016 to July 2019 for taxonomic identification of the species found in coastal waters. In this study, three species of cepheid mild stingers, Cephea cephea, Marivagia stellata, and Netrostoma setouchianum were reported for the first time in Sri Lankan waters. Moreover, the diagnostic description of the genus Marivagia is revised in this study due to the possessing of appendages on both oral arms and arm disc of Sri Lankan specimens, comparing with original notes and photographs of M. stellata. This Indo-Pacific jellyfish was observed in 2015 during a field work. The present note reports its details in the Lebanese waters. Keywords: Indo-Pacific jellyfish, Marivagia stellata, Lebanese waters Received: 29.05.2019, Accepted: 29.06.2019 The Mediterranean Sea is severely affected by alien species: 986 exotic species are recorded in this basin, representing 6% of the total number of species. Interestingly, 775 of them are established in the eastern basin, mostly (88.4 %) from the Indo-Pacific and tropical Atlantic, and 108 are considered as invasive (Zenetos et al. 2010; 2012). In particular, new invasions of jellyfish are increasingly reported in the Mediterranean Sea in recent years: 13 invasive species which represent 3% of the known jellyfish species in the Mediterranean Sea were reported (Brotz and Pauly 2012; Mizrahi et al. 2015; Oztürk et al. 2018; Mamish et al. 2019). Since the opening of the Suez Canal, the Lebanese waters have been colonized by many exotic species, especially from the Red Sea. Concerning jellyfish, two lessepsian species have been recorded in the Lebanese waters (Lakkis 2013): Rhopilema nomadica (Brotz and Pauly 2012) and Cassiopea andromeda (Forsskål, 1775). -

Reasons for the lack of resolution of scyphozoan familial relationships include a dearth of morphological characters that reliably distin- guish taxa and incomplete taxonomic sampling in molecular studies. Here, we address the latter issue by using maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships among all 19 currently valid scyphozoan families, using sequence data from two nuclear genes: 18S and 28S rDNA. -

E-mail: [email protected] Published behavioural, DNA sequence, and morphologic data on six populations of Mastigias, five from marine lakes and one from the lagoon, in Palau are summarized. Each marine lake popula- tion is distinguished from the lagoon population and from other lake populations by an unique suite of characteristics. Morphological differences among Mastigias populations in Palau are greater than those recorded between any previously described species of Mastigias, whereas molecular differences are far less (≤2.2% in COI and ITS1) than those found between medusae identified in the field as Mastigias papua (>6% in COI and ITS1). Thus, each marine lake population in Palau is described as a new subspecies of Mastigias cf. papua: remengesaui (in Uet era Ongael), nakamurai (in Goby Lake), etpisoni (in Ongeim’l Tketau), saliii (in Clear Lake), and remeliiki (in Uet era Ngermeuangel). Morphological characters identified it as a cepheid (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa, Rhizostomeae). However, the specimens showed remarkable differences from other cepheid genera; unlike Cephea and Netrostoma it lacks warts or knobs centrally on the exumbrella and filaments on oral disk and between mouths, and it differs from Cotylorhiza in its proximally loose anastomosed radial canals and in lacking stalked suckers and filaments on the moutharms. We thus describe it herein as Marivagia stellata gen. et sp. nov. We also present the results of molecular analyses based on mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and 28S ribosomal DNA, which support its placement among the Cepheidae and also provide its barcode signature. -

More recently, jellyfish fisheries have expanded to the Western Hemisphere, often driven by demand from buyers in Asia as well as collapses of more traditional local finfish and shellfish stocks. Despite this history and continued expansion, jellyfish fisheries are understudied, and relevant information is sparse and disaggregated. Catches of jellyfish are often not reported explicitly, with countries including them in fisheries statistics as “miscellaneous invertebrates” or not at all. Research and management of jellyfish fisheries is scant to nonexistent. Processing technologies for edible jellyfish have not advanced, and present major concerns for environmental and human health. Presented here is the first global assessment of jellyfish fisheries, including identification of countries that catch jellyfish, as well as which species are targeted. A global catch reconstruction is performed for jellyfish landings from 1950 to 2013, as well as an estimate of mean contemporary catches. Results reveal that all investigated aspects of jellyfish fisheries have been underestimated, including the number of fishing countries, the number of targeted species, and the magnitudes of catches. Contemporary global landings of jellyfish are at least 750,000 tonnes annually, more than double previous estimates.
