Nitrogen Content in Riparian Arthropods Is Most Dependent on Allometry and Order
Wiesenborn: Nitrogen Contents in Riparian Arthropods 71 NITROGEN CONTENT IN RIPARIAN ARTHROPODS IS MOST DEPENDENT ON ALLOMETRY AND ORDER WILLIAM D. WIESENBORN U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Lower Colorado Regional Office, P.O. Box 61470, Boulder City, NV 89006 ABSTRACT I investigated the contributions of body mass, order, family, and trophic level to nitrogen (N) content in riparian spiders and insects collected near the Colorado River in western Arizona. Most variation (97.2%) in N mass among arthropods was associated with the allometric effects of body mass. Nitrogen mass increased exponentially as body dry-mass increased. Significant variation (20.7%) in N mass adjusted for body mass was explained by arthropod order. Ad- justed N mass was highest in Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, Araneae, and Odonata and lowest in Coleoptera. Classifying arthropods by family compared with order did not explain signifi- cantly more variation (22.1%) in N content. Herbivore, predator, and detritivore trophic-levels across orders explained little variation (4.3%) in N mass adjusted for body mass. Within or- ders, N content differed only among trophic levels of Diptera. Adjusted N mass was highest in predaceous flies, intermediate in detritivorous flies, and lowest in phytophagous flies. Nitro- gen content in riparian spiders and insects is most dependent on allometry and order and least dependent on trophic level. I suggest the effects of allometry and order are due to exoskeleton thickness and composition. Foraging by vertebrate predators, such as insectivorous birds, may be affected by variation in N content among riparian arthropods. Cannibalism, the act of eating an individual of the same species has been little studied in omnivorous insect predators. Dicyphus errans (Wolff) (Hemiptera: Miridae) is a generalist omnivorous predator that commonly occurs in tomato greenhouses and fi eld crops in the Mediterranean basin. In this work cannibalism among same-aged neonate nymphs of D. errans was studied when 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 individuals were placed in a Petri dish along with or without heterospecifi c prey. Although nymphs were un- able to complete their development in the absence of prey they survived longer when there were initially 2 individuals per dish than in any other treatment including a single individual. This may indicate that cannibalism in this predator has positive effect on nymphal survival, which however was not the case at higher densities. The presence of heterospecifi c prey increased nymphal survival and individuals were as equally successful in completing their development as when kept singly. -

Simple Summary: Biological control (BC) is an effective way to regulate pest populations in hor- ticultural crops, allowing the decrease of pesticide usage. On tomato, predatory insects like plant bugs or mirids provide BC services against several insect pests. Native predators are adapted to local conditions of climate and ecology and therefore may be well suited to provide BC services. Dicyphus cerastii is a predatory mirid that is present in the Mediterranean region and occurs in tomato greenhouses in Portugal. However, little is known about its contribution to BC in this crop. In this study, we evaluated how prey consumption is affected by increasing prey abundance on four different prey, in laboratory conditions. We found that the predator can increase its predation rate until a maximum is reached and that prey characteristics like size and mobility can affect predation. -

More than500 taxa below the family level wereinventoried, and each listing includes relative frequency of encounter, life stages collected, and dominant role in the greenleaf manzanita community. Specific host relationships are included for some predators and parasitoids. Herbivores, predators, and parasitoids comprised the majority (80 percent) of identified insects and related taxa. Cured Tobacco to Promote the Predator Jalysus Wickhami Van Duzee (Hemiptera: Berytidae)
ABSTRACT NELSON, PETER NICHOLAS. Conservation Biological Control in North Carolina Flue- cured Tobacco to Promote the Predator Jalysus wickhami Van Duzee (Hemiptera: Berytidae). (Under the direction of Drs. Hannah Burrack and Clyde Sorenson). Flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) is the most valuable crop produced in North Carolina (NC). Insecticide applications for arthropod pest control represent a significant cost for producers and can reduce the abundance or activity of predatory and parasitic arthropods. Conservation biological control is an approach to promoting the activity of such natural enemies within integrated pest management programs, utilizing a variety of approaches to employ this natural control for pest management. Jalysus wickhami Van Duzee (Hemiptera: Berytidae) is the most abundant predatory arthropod in NC flue-cured tobacco, consuming the tobacco-feeding Lepidopteran pests Heliothis virescens (Fabricis, 1777) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Manduca spp. (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae): Manduca sexta (Linnaeus, 1763) and Manduca quinquemaculata (Haworth, 1803). The goal of my dissertation research was to conserve J. wickhami and promote the biological control it provides by assessing the influence of insecticide use and evaluating arthropod-plant interactions that may benefit the predators and reduce plant damage. Imidacloprid is widely used in NC flue-cured tobacco production and is applied as a plants systemic prophylactic against early season pests. J. wickhami are obligate plant feeders, and plant feeding may be a route of exposure to the xylem-mobile imidacloprid which could reduce biological control by J. wickhami. In the first chapter of my dissertation, I determined in laboratory experiments that exposure to tobacco tissues treated with imidacloprid via systemic or foliar applications was equally toxic to J. -

The material collected contained a total number of 65 specimens of Berytinidae divided into 3 genera and 3 species: Pronotacantha armata Stusak, from Curaçao; Aknisus multispinus Ashmead, from Bonaire, Aruba and Curaçao; Jalysus reductus Barber, from Saba, St. Eustatius and Curaçao. Pronotacantha armata and Aknisus multispinus had not yet been recorded from the Antilles. Jalysus reductus is already known from the region studied; however, it is recorded here for the first time from the Lesser Antilles. Three additional species are known from the Antilles from the literature: Protacanthus decorus Uhler, Jalysus sobrinus Stil and Jalysus reversus V. Duz. Protacanthus decorus Uhler, 1893, was described from St. Vincent and subsequently recorded from Grenada (UHLER, 1894), Jamaica 64 (as Metacanthus decorus, VAN DUZEE, 1907), and Haiti (STUSAK, 1970); it also occurs in Venezuela, Costa Rica (STUSAK, 1970), Colombia, Texas (HARRIS, 1941) and South Florida (MC ATEE, 1919). Jalysus sobrinus Stal, 1860, is distributed, as far as is known in described Brasil South and Central America. -

Moreover, the survival duration of the predator was studied in response to different nutritional sources. In multi-choice trials all developmental stages of the predator tested, namely N3, N5, and adult female, showed a clear preference for Aphis gossypii Glover over other prey species offered. Nonetheless, a considerable number of Tetranychus urticae Koch, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), and Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) were also consumed. Myzus persicae (Sulzer) was the least preferred by all the predatory stages tested. In a separate experiment, D. tamaninii was able to complete its development from N1 to adult stage in an average of 21 days, with 20% mortality, when offered only T. urticae as prey.As testing all of the potential interactions with other beneficial arthropods is not practical, the present study focused on 3 natural enemies most likely to be disrupted by a possible release of D.
