News | Q1 | 2021 1 World Sailing News | Q1 | 2021 Presidential Welcome It is an honour to introduce you to the first edition of World Sailing News. Upon my election last November, I outlined my intention for World Sailing to communicate better with its Member National Authorities, Regional Associations, Class Associations, Committee members, and the hard-working volunteers that make our sport work, from the grassroots to the peak of performance. I hope that the introduction of these quarterly newsletters will help to achieve that. Open communication within our sport has always been important, but given the current climate, it is more crucial now than it has ever been. It is important that World Sailing takes the lead by sharing best practice, forming new ideas and creating inspiring content that touches all aspects of our sport. It is also vital that this material is well distributed across our community. It is a pity that we have not been able to meet face to face for so long, but I have enjoyed meeting and engaging with you directly and via our Regional Meetings. It is important that our dialogue works two ways so we can work together to grow the beautiful sport we all love. World Class Yachting Ropes Core Braiding Technology STS Ocean 5000 Core Fibre: SK78, heat stretched, 12-strand This core technology is a must for all high performance applications such as backstays and halyards aboard race yachts. Developed by the experts at Robline, a special heat stretch process, which includes a defined cooldown phase after the heating process, lends this rope its defined structure. This makes it possible to achieve an enormous increase in breaking strength coupled with minimal elongation (less than 0.5 % at working load). Ocean 7000 Core Fibre: Dyneema® SK99 Braiding: 12-strand This core lends itself ideally to applications with high breaking loads, and at the same time for all those applications that require a product that is easy to splice. Typical uses are those where it is necessary to expand the attributes of Ocean 3000 XG. Ocean 3000 XG Core Fibre: Dyneema® SK78 Braiding: 12-strand This high-performance fibre is the basis for various applications in sailing. For strains of up to 20% of the breaking load, a stretch of roughly just 1% can be achieved. XG stands for Next Generation, which refers to Robline’s enhanced coating for this fibre. It provi- des good UV stability and improves the fibre’s resistance to abrasion. Turluck Every year the LMSRF Grants-in-Aid Fund is assigned monies from the LMSRF Endowment Fund for distribution to LMSRF Individual Members and LMSRF Member sailing organizations to improve skills and competition of sailors in the Lake Michigan area by its Grants-in-Aid Committee. In 2017, $20,278.57 was assigned; to date $12,790.00 has been pledged or distributed. Funds that remain after December 31 are returned to the LMSRF Endowment Fund. We have funded individuals and teams to US and International Championships, individuals and teams to clinics, and Sailing Instructor scholarships. Applying for a grant is easy! First review the requirements: http://lmsrf.org/grants-in-aid/grants-requirements. Second, download, fill in our application, save and email it to the LMSRF Grants-in-Aid Committee Chair and the Office as described on the form: http://www.lmsrf.org/images/stories/docs/lmsrf_grants_in_aid_application.doc.
