American Opera: Dreiser's Tragedy Transformed
Institute for Studies In American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York NEWSLETTER Volume XXXV, No. 2 Spring 2006 Staging the The cultural revolution of the Sixties was waiting to happen when Bob Dylan arrived in Greenwich Village in late January Folk: New 1961. In Chronicles: Volume One, he recalls that up and down MacDougal Street one could hear angst-ridden beat York City’s poets, modern jazzers, and subversive comedians. But it was Friends of Dylan’s passion for folk music that drew him to clubs and coffeehouses like the Café Wha?, the Gaslight, Gerdes Folk Old Time City, and the Village Gate that were overflowing with Music musicians eager to carve out a place in the burgeoning folk music revival. There Dylan could hear a wide range of styles by that at that time fell under the folk umbrella: the slick Ray Allen arrangements of the Journeymen and the Clancy Brothers; the edgy topical songs of Tom Paxton and Len Chandler; the old left pronouncements of Pete Seeger; the laments of transplanted bluesmen Sonny Terry and John Lee Hooker; and the old-time mountain music and bluegrass styles of the New Lost City Ramblers and the Greenbriar Boys.1 Dylan would soon leave his own indelible imprint on the revival, alloying traditional country and blues styles with social commentary and abstract poetry to produce a potent sound that would seduce the baby boom generation. But Dylan wasn’t the only new arrival in the Village during Inside the winter of 1961. In March the New York Times music critic Robert Shelton announced that “Five farmers from the Blue This Issue Ridge Mountains brought a ripe harvest of traditional music 2 Celebrating Randy to the city Saturday night.” The farmers turned out to be a Weston by Jeff group of unknown mountain musicians led by Tennessee Taylor and Hank banjoist Clarence Ashley and featuring the blind guitar Williams.................4 virtuoso Arthel “Doc” Watson. -

Tafler Introduction: Memory as Open Territory For a brief moment in time, film/videomakers may join with empowered spec- tators and open up the boundaries of the cinema machine. In a unique reflexive environment, film/videomakers and spectators can unravel their own memory/ history. Each, in their own way, may dredge the matrix of their home environ- ment—the country landscape, the urban grid, the tenement clusters, ethnic neighborhoods, farmhouses, barns, and the recorded ghosts of their occupation. The landscape models the intersections in their work, complex networks of intermittent movement, commerce, and ideas. The bonds stretch between the text and the spectator. Memory and technology become inseparable, the effects of each structuring the other. Prodding a living memory, the tools mediate the social experience and the social, political implications of the captured image. Efforts to explore the relationship between the social and the technical have taken many forms by many artists. Media artist Peter d’Agostino describes a childhood experience of flinching and ducking when the 3D objects came fly- ing out of the cinema screen in the nineteen-fifties. -

It contains lead sheets to her own and other people’s compositions and manuscript scores of many of her arrangements for Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Mary Lou Williams, among others. One extensive series contains numerous arrangements for Randy Weston, and her late computer scores for him are also present. PROCESSING INFORMATION The collection was processed, and a finding aid created, by Kristin McGee in 2000 and the finding aid was updated by Laurie Lee Moses in 2010 and Heidi Marshall in 2020. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Melba Liston was a jazz composer, arranger, and performer born in 1926. She was a trombonist during an era (1942–1985) when few women played brass instruments and even fewer toured with jazz bands. She played in the bands of several important jazz musicians, including Count Basie, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Randy Weston, and Quincy Jones. Liston had an active career as an arranger for important jazz composers as well as popular music record labels. She also worked with youth orchestras in the troubled neighborhood of Watts, California, leaving the United States to teach at the Jamaica Institute of Music for six years (1973–1979). -
