Oshkosh Scholar Page 43 Studying Complex Star-Forming Fields: Rosette Nebula and Monoceros Loop Chris Hathaway and Anthony Kuchera, co-authors Dr. Nadia Kaltcheva, Physics and Astronomy, faculty adviser Christopher Hathaway obtained a B.S. in physics in 2007 and is currently pursuing his masters in physics education at UW Oshkosh. He collaborated with Dr. Nadia Kaltcheva on his senior research project and presented their findings at theAmerican Astronomical Society meeting (2008), the Celebration of Scholarship at UW Oshkosh (2009), and the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in La Crosse, Wisconsin (2009). Anthony Kuchera graduated from UW Oshkosh in May 2008 with a B.S. in physics. He collaborated with Dr. Kaltcheva from fall 2006 through graduation. He presented his astronomy-related research at Posters in the Rotunda (2007 and 2008), the Wisconsin Space Conference (2007), the UW System Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2007 and 2008), and the American Astronomical Society’s 211th meeting (2008). In December 2009 he earned an M.S. in physics from Florida State University where he is currently working toward a Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics. Dr. Nadia Kaltcheva is a professor of physics and astronomy. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Sofia in Bulgaria. She joined the UW Oshkosh Physics and Astronomy Department in 2001. Her research interests are in the field of stellar photometry and its application to the study of Galactic star-forming fields and the spiral structure of the Milky Way. Abstract An investigation that presents a new analysis of the structure of the Northern Monoceros field was recently completed at the Department of Physics andAstronomy at UW Oshkosh. -

Next Meeting: March 26th Prelude to a Night of Observing by Sam Pitts and Jerry Oltion At our March meeting Sam Pitts will talk about the things a person should consider when getting ready for a night’s observing. He’ll also cover how to find what you’re looking for in the sky, and since March is the Messier month (when all 110 Messier objects are visible to dedicated all-nighters) he’ll discuss the best strategy for observing those as well. Since Jerry couldn’t make it to the February meeting, he will do his collimation and mirror cleaning demonstrations at the March meeting. We’ll also have a “What’s up” program on what else besides the Messier objects are visible in the March sky, and Jacob Strandlien will present the news in astronomy covering the last few months. And as always, we encourage the sharing of astronomy-related questions, news, or projects with other members of the club. The Young Cluster and Star Forming Region NGC 2264
Handbook of Star Forming Regions Vol. I Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2008 Bo Reipurth, ed. The Young Cluster and Star Forming Region NGC 2264 S. E. Dahm Department of Astronomy, California Institute of Technology, MS 105-24, Pasadena, CA 91125, USA Abstract. NGC2264 is a young Galactic cluster and the dominant component of the Mon OB1 association lying approximately 760 pc distant within the local spiral arm. The cluster is hierarchically structured, with subclusters of suspected members spread across several parsecs. Associated with the cluster is an extensive molecular cloud complex spanning more than two degrees on the sky. The combined mass of the remaining molecular cloud cores upon which the cluster is superposed is estimated to 4 be at least ∼3.7×10 M⊙. Star formation is ongoing within the region as evidenced by the presence of numerous embedded clusters of protostars, molecular outflows, and Herbig-Haro objects. The stellar population of NGC2264 is dominated by the O7 V multiple star, S Mon, and several dozen B-type zero-age main sequence stars. X-ray imaging surveys, Hα emission surveys, and photometric variability studies have iden- tified more than 600 intermediate and low-mass members distributed throughout the molecular cloud complex, but concentrated within two densely populated areas between S Mon and the Cone Nebula. Estimates for the total stellar population of the cluster range as high as 1000 members and limited deep photometric surveys have identified ∼230 substellar mass candidates. The median age of NGC2264 is estimated to be ∼3 Myr by fitting various pre-main sequence isochrones to the low-mass stellar population, but an apparent age dispersion of at least ∼5 Myr can be inferred from the broadened sequence of suspected members. -

Tim writes, “There’s a lot going on in this narrowband image of the famous Cone Nebula region. The forces of star formation have created a rich and complex tapestry of textures that seem almost fluid in the way they flow and swirl. The Cone Nebula itself was an object I recall seeing in images from Palomar Observatory when I was young. I wondered what that could possibly be, with it’s almost uncannily straight sides and deep, dark nebulosity that seemed to defy understanding. -

Carina (the Keel) Notes: Central Coast Astronomy CentralCoastAstronomy.org Page 1 Monoceros (the Unicorn) Monoceros, (the unicorn), meaning “one horn” from the Greek. This is a modern constellation in the northern sky created by Petrus Plancius in 1612. Rosette Nebula is an open cluster plus the surrounding emission nebula. The open cluster is actually denoted NGC 2244, while the surrounding nebulosity was discovered piecemeal by several astronomers and given multiple NGC numbers. This is an area where a cluster of young stars about 3 million years old have blown a hole in the gas and dust where they were born. Hard ultraviolet light from these young stars have excited the gases in the surrounding nebulosity, giving the red wreath-like appearance in photographs. NGC 2244 is in the center of this roughly round nebula. This cluster has a visual magnitude of 4.8 and a distance of about 4900 light years. It was discovered by William Herschel on January 24, 1784. NGC 2244 is about 24’ across and contains about 100 stars. -
