Crossroads Film and Television Program List This resource list will help expand your programmatic options for the Crossroads exhibition. Work with your local library, schools, and daycare centers to introduce age-appropriate books that focus on themes featured in the exhibition. Help libraries and bookstores to host book clubs, discussion programs or other learning opportunities, or develop a display with books on the subject. This list is not exhaustive or even all encompassing – it will simply get you started. Rural themes appeared in feature-length films from the beginning of silent movies. The subject matter appealed to audiences, many of whom had relatives or direct experience with life in rural America. Historian Hal Barron explores rural melodrama in “Rural America on the Silent Screen,” Agricultural History 80 (Fall 2006), pp. 383-410. Over the decades, film and television series dramatized, romanticized, sensationalized, and even trivialized rural life, landscapes and experiences. Audiences remained loyal, tuning in to series syndicated on non-network channels. Rural themes still appear in films and series, and treatments of the subject matter range from realistic to sensational. Thousand Oaks Library American Radio Archives Bill Dana Collection Bill Dana (1924- ), a comedian and actor, may be best known as "José Jiménez" a popular character he created on The Steve Allen Show in the 1950s and continued to perform throughout his career, but he is also a successful screenwriter, author, cartoonist, producer, director, recording artist, inventor and stand-up comedian. While Dana's own papers are at the American Comedy Archives at Emerson College (Boston, MA), a collection of TV scripts from the Aaron Spelling production company and a smaller number of radio scripts were transferred to the American Radio Archives. FINAL SALUTE Each year we note the passing of influential creators, performers, and institutions. These passings occurred between SoonerCon 28 and the original date for SoonerCon 29. American actress and singer Peggy Lipton passed away May 11, 2019. Her best-known acting role was as undercover cop Julie Barnes on The Mod Squad, 1968-1973. She won a new generation of fans when she ran the Double R Diner as Norma Jennings, in Twin Peaks. Doris Day was a big-band singer, TV and film actress, and talk-show host. She won several awards for comedy and popularity. She was also an activist for animal welfare, lending her star power to several organizations bearing her name. She died May 13, 2019. Domestic cat Tardar Sauce was better known as the meme she unwittingly founded: Grumpy Cat. Dwarfism contributed to her scowling face, which graced ads for Friskies and General Mills Honey Nut Cheerios. The frowning feline cashed in her lives on May 14, 2019. The career of the inspired Tim Conway began in 1962 and lasted through TV, movies, voice-overs, and video games. Among his noted appearances were the goofy Dorf; four years on McHale ‘s Navy; eleven years on The Carol Burnett Show; several solo TV shows; and as Barnacle Boy, 1999-2012, on SpongeBob SquarePants. Conway took his final bow on May 14, 2019. Born in China, I.M. Pei moved to America in 1935 and in 1948 became a professional architect. He designed the John F. Kennedy Library, which took until 1979 to complete. In 1962 he was selected by OKC’s Urban Renewal Authority to redesign our downtown.

WHAT IT IS: The Animated Series Fox Force 5 is an R-Rated mock-serious parody of 70s Cop Shows like Charlie’s Angels, set in a Blaxploitation-movie version of 1970s New York City, USA. The series stars a racially diverse team of female undercover agents (and one transgender agent) led by their employer, Marcus Slade. Together, they take on the kind of cases that the police can’t - or won’t - handle, in their ongoing efforts to stick it to The Man. WHERE IT’S AT: World Setting Fox Force 5 is set in a semi-fictionalized version of urban America in the 1970s, as it was depicted in the movies and films of the day - a world run by corrupt politicians, greedy corporations, crooked cops, and criminals who - unbeknownst to the average citizen - are all part of a secret conspiracy controlled by a shadowy figure known only as The Man, and financed by untold millions of dollars (in 70s money) in corporate kick-backs, secret government contracts, high-level bribes, and all sorts of criminal activities . The only people who are hip to what's really going on are individuals who are willing to Fight the Power, like Marcus Slade, the Foxes, and - a running joke - pretty much everyone in the non-White/non-“square” world such as pimps, prostitutes, Jazz musicians, artists, and the entire urban Black community.
