Ramayana-Tour Sri-Lanka.Pdf Day One: Bandaranaike International Airport / Anuradhapura (190km – 04 hours 30minutes approx.) A guide assigned by us will meet & greet you on arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport. Proceed in a very comfortable air conditioned bus to Anuradhapura. Have Lunch at a Restaurant. Proceed to Anuradhapura. En route visit Sri Munneswaram Devasthanam & Manavari Kovil. Munneswaram Temple - situated at the place where Lord Rama felt that the bramhaasthi dosham which was following him when he was returning to India in King Rawana's Vimana after the victorious battle with King Rawana who was a Brahmin- was no longer there - where he prayed God Shiva who in turn adviced him to install and prey four lingams at Manavari in Chilaw, Thirukoneswarm in Trincomalee, Thiruketheswaram in Mannar and Rameshwaram in India Visit the Manavari Temple - where the first lingam was installed in Sri Lanka by Lord Rama on the advice of God Shiva - still called Ramalinga Shivam Proceed to Heritage Hotel or similar hotel in Anuradhapura. http://www.heritagehotel.lk/ Dinner & Overnight at the hotel in Anuradhapura sharing double rooms. Day Two: Anuradhapura / Manner / Sigiriya (345km – 06 hours 40minutes approx.) Have early breakfast and leave for Sigiriya via Manner. Proceed to Thirukeshwaram & visit Thalaimannar the vicinity of Ram Sethu. Have lunch at a Restaurant. Dinner & Overnight at the hotel in Sigiriya sharing double rooms. Day Three: Sigiriya / Nuwara Eliya (165km – 04 hours 45minutes approx.) After breakfast visit the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The ancient city of Sigiriya was designated a cultural World Heritage Site in 1982. It is also proposed that the site should be named the eighth wonder of the world, indicating it is in the same league as other international wonders such as the Grand Canyon and Ancient Pyramids. Translated as ‘Lion Rock' into English, the name of the monument indicates the way in which visitors used to begin their final ascent to the top – through the open jaws and throat (‘giriya') of a lion (‘sinha'). Unfortunately, the only remains of this lion figure are the gigantic paws, sculpted into the side of the rock. The topography of the area is flat except for the massive rock outcrop of the fortress itself (which rises an incredible 600 ft up from the green scrub jungle). The unusual rock is particularly interesting due to its flat top (nearly 8 acres in size), that was used in its entirety to build King Kasyapa's fortress complex, still evident by the presence of the extensive ruins. Proceed to Nuwara Eliya. En route visit Dambulla. Have lunch at a restaurant Dambulla rock temple was built by King Walagambahu in the 1st century BC. And is a World heritage site. It is the most impressive of Sri Lanka’s cave temples. The complex f five caves with over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls and ceilings, is the largest area of paintings found in the world. It contains over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of the Buddha out of rock and spanning 14 meters. Day Four: Nuwara Eliya After early breakfast at the hotel visit the following. Visit the Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple which has Hanuman as the presiding deity where rituals are made on full moon days. This is thought to be the place where Hanuman was searching for Sita Devi Then visit the Gayathri Pedam , the first and foremost Temple devoted to Gayathri Amman in Sri Lanka built enshrining a lingam brought from River Narmada built at the place believed to be where Meghanath - King Rawana's son was blessed by God Shiva. Have lunch at a restaurant. Visit Divurumpola Temple - the place where Seetha performed the Agni Pareeksha to prove her innocence. Return to the hotel in Nuwara Eliya. Dinner & Overnight at the hotel in Nuwara ELiya sharing double rooms. Day Five: Nuwara Eliya / Ella / Adams Peak (180km – 06 hours approx.) After early breakfast leave for Kalutara. En route visit the following. Visit Ashok Vatika - the main place where Sita was kept in hiding and the Sita Amman Temple - which is dedicated to all major characters Sita , Rama , Lakshman and Hanuman where the differently sized foot marks prove the immense powers of Hanuman passing through Sita Eliya where she was allowed to live a free life. Visit Divurumpola Temple - the place where Seetha performed the Agni Pareeksha to prove her innocence. Proceed to Ella. Have lunch at a restaurant. Ravana Ella & Cave Situated in the massive Ella rock, the ‘Ravana’ is a beautiful wide waterfall which is ranked amongst the widest in the world. Spanning a width or approx ….feet the Ravana falls has become a spot of legendary importance because of its connection to the epic ‘Ramayana’. There is a cave associated with Ravana, the demon King of Lanka who imprisoned Rama’s wife Seeta as related in the Hindu epic. Excavations here have revealed some human skeletons belonging to Balangoda man (Homo Sapiens Balangodensis) and tools dating from 8000 – 2500 B.C. Proceed to Punsisi Rest or similar hotel in Adams Peak Have dinner at the hotel and rest. Late night begin climb at Adams Peak to reach the top in time to view the Sun rise. Day Six: Adams Peak / Kalutara (175km – 05 hours 30minutes approx.) After descending have breakfast at the hotel and leave for Kalutara. Have lunch at a restaurant. Proceed to Coco Royal Beach Resort or similar hotel in Kalutara. http://www.cocoroyalbeach.com/ Rest & Leisure at the hotel in Kalutara. Dinner & Overnight at the hotel in Kalutara. Day Seven: Kalutara / Galle / Kalutara (160km – 02 hours 30minutes approx.) Have early breakfast at the hotel and commence excursion to Galle. Visit Rumassala Hill by foot or by Tuk Tuk Rumassala, known to colonialists as Buona Vista, is the subject of many legends. It features in the Ramayana, as the home of the beautiful queen Sita, hidden in the jungle nearby. Hanuman who was sent to fetch a medicinal plant for a wounded soldier, was unable to find it and brought the Himalayan Mountains on which it was said to grow. He dropped a chunk of the mountain in Unawatuna ('here it fell'- this is how the name Unawatuna came to be ) to form the present mountain, where many medicinal plants still grow. There is a major magnetic anomaly near Unawatuna, which Arthur C. Clarke attributes to a meteorite strike and it is said that satellites lose their orbits with unusual frequency overhead. Visit Devinuwara Have lunch at a restaurant. Return to Hotel in Kalutara. En route visit Seenigama maha devalaya Dinner & Overnight at the hotel in Kalutara sharing double rooms. Day Eight: Kalutara / Colombo (45km – 01 hours approx.) Have breakfast at the hotel and embark on a Colombo city tour. Colombo is a modern city which blends the beauty of the old world charm and modern day development. The busy Bazaar, Fort & Pettah area, Old Dutch church, Kovil, Temple in Gangaramaya, Town Hall, Independence square and other areas in Colombo could be explored whilst on tour apart from the bargain shopping at popular stores What was once a swamp adjoining the famous Beira Lake, a landmark in the capital city, is today a vibrant complex comprising the Gangaramaya temple, the ‘seema malaka’ – an assembly hall for monks - in the picturesque Beira Lake and a vocational training institute. The temple has been in existence for over 120 years having being established by one of the most famous scholar monks, Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumanagala Nayaka Thera, founder of the Vidyodaya Pirivena, originally an institute of oriental learning for monks, now a State University – Sri Jayewardenapura University. Day Nine: Colombo / Airport (35km – 45 minutes approx.) After breakfast at the hotel rest & Leisure at the hotel. Jayasena & Kim Spijker PGIAR, Colombo, February, 2005 1. Introduction On December 26, 2004 an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered a tsunami. Within a few hours its sea waves hit the coastal regions of several countries in the Indian Ocean area. Sri Lanka’s eastern, south and southwestern coastal areas were severely affected. The devastation and loss of life was unprecedented. On December 29, ICOMOS, Sri Lanka issued a statement in which it expressed its grief, but also looked forward to the coming process of rebuilding. In this process, appropriate cultural heritage management is required to ensure that vital parts of local landscapes, such as familiar buildings, will not be lost forever. 2. Survey of cultural heritage sites To make an assessment of the damaged cultural property in the tsunami-affected areas, seven universities were sent out to carry out a survey in January 2005. On February 2, at an ICOMOS meeting at the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology (PGIAR) in Colombo it was decided that additional information on the post-tsunami situation in Galle was required. Consequently, on the request of ICOMOS, Sri Lanka and the Urban Development Authority, the authors conducted a photographic survey in the Municipality of Galle, involving the coastal area from Gintota to Unawatuna.

    Sri Lanka Island Tour (19 Days / 18 Nights) AIRPORT - NEGOMBO DAY 01 Arrival at the Bandaranayake International Airport, meet your driver/guide and transfer to the first hotel in Negombo by a luxury car. Visits: Colonial Dutch Fort Close to the seafront near the lagoon mouth are the ruins of the old Dutch fort, which has a fine gateway inscribed with the date 1678. Also there is a green, called the Esplanade, where cricket matches are a big attraction. As the fort grounds are now occupied by the town’s prison, the only way you’ll get a peek inside is by committing a serious crime. You’d need to be very interested in old Dutch architecture to go to such lengths. Dutch Canal The boat ride/safari that takes you along the colonial Dutch canal which runs through Waikkal, gives you snap shots of bird life, essentially comprising waders, stunning kingfishers, rare pied kingfishers, bee-eaters, Brahminy kites, etc. Water monitors, bearing an uncanny resemblance to crocodiles, are also bound to make an appearance, so keep your eye out for a glimpse! You can prolong your boat journey by following the canal onto the sea, where you can continue onwards to Negombo where you can stop at the town, do some shopping and return via boat to Waikkal. 2nd biggest Fish Market in Sri Lanka The Negombo Fishing Village, also known as the Lellama by the locals, is located across the lagoon bridge, near the Old Dutch Gate. The large open air fish market is the second largest in the country.
