These are her words. We married in 2011 and our lives seemed perfect. Just weeks later, I suffered debilitating back pain and loss of sensation in “my legs. We were shocked when scans showed a large tumour on my spine, a malignant high grade osteosarcoma – a rare DQGGLIÀFXOWWRWUHDWFDQFHU I had surgery almost immediately but the tumour returned and was now inoperable. The little hope that I’d had evaporated DQGE\-XQH,ZDVFRQÀQHGWRDZKHHOFKDLUDQGGRFWRUV said I might only have months to live. $W ÀUVW , WKRXJKW VXFK D OLIH ZDV QRW ZRUWK OLYLQJ +RZHYHU memories of all the happy times kept me going. When the hospice told me about Willow, I was excited. My paralysis meant getting out was a struggle and our wish was simply to be able to have a date in a nice restaurant. We chose to go to the world famous Fat Duck and it was the most romantic and memorable meal in years. :KDWPDGH\RXU6SHFLDO'D\6SDUNOH" The experience left me with wonderful memories. But the greatest gift? After starting his career as a trainee in 1997, Sam rose up the Beeb’s news division and is now responsible for commissioning and innovation, establishing new forms of real time online reporting, and a strategy for younger audiences. As executive editor, he has led the BBC’s coverage of the EU referendum, the election of President Donald Trump, and international terror. Sam, thank you for joining me. Nice to see you. So, Sam, executive editor for BBC News Channel and News at One. What does the job involve? Are you basically the guy who runs News Channel? I suppose that’s right, yes. My joB has been through several variations in the five years or so I’ve been doing some of it, and then other things, and it’s changed around, as you do with these things, but I started off as what was called the controller of the BBC News Channel at the time. That sounds pretty good! Yes. And I think this joB is Basically the same as the executive editor. So we’ve regrouped it a few times, changed things around a little bit as we’ve looked at how we integrate with digital, but yes, Basically I look after News Channel both on the day editorial, and also the strategy and the programming that we run every day.
