LONDON JOHN MURRAY, ALBEMARLE STREET 1880 All rights are reserved [v] PREFACE. In the year 1860, shortly before leaving England for a long continental tour, the late Mr. William Longman requested me to make for him some sketches of the great Alpine peaks. At this time I had only a literary acquaintance with mountaineering, and had even not seen—much less set foot upon—a mountain. Amongst the peaks which were upon my list was Mont Pelvoux, in Dauphiné. The sketches that were required of it were to celebrate the triumph of some Englishmen who intended to make its ascent. They came—they saw—but they did not conquer. By a mere chance I fell in with a very agreeable Frenchman who accompanied this party, and was pressed by him to return to the assault. -

Over the last 150 years the general retreat of glaciers is consistent world-wide. Due to their proximity to melting conditions, glaciers are especially sensi- tive to small changes in climatic conditions, causing the observed, often kilometer-long glacier retreat and extensive volume loss that is well visible and even physically under- standable to everybody. Considering scenarios of future climate change, glaciers will further continue to retreat and lose mass with increasing temperatures. The observed shrinkage and even disappearance of glaciers in high-mountain regions can have strong environmental impacts at local, regional and even continental scales. In this regard, changes in seasonal water supply, potentially hazardous situations due to formation of new lakes or hydropower production are important aspects for the people living in the Alps and downstream of glaciers. -
From the Zinal Glacier to the Swiss Jura Mountains: Exploring the High Alps on Snowshoes Exploring the High Alps on Snowshoes
From the Zinal Glacier to the Swiss Jura Mountains: Exploring the High Alps on Snowshoes By Ian Spare itting here in Switzerland in the summer, the winter seems a long time ago. It's more than 30 degrees Celsius (that's 86 degrees Fahrenheit if you're in North America) and it's only 9 a.m. S So, a great way to cool down is to look back at some trips around Switzerland and let the snowy landscapes cool the room. I once made a comment on a Nordic skiing online forum about following a raquette track on skis for a short while. I got a confused reply telling me that raquette was French-Canadian for snowshoes, which the writer didn't think were used much outside North America. It turns out that raquettes is just a French word and one used here in the French speaking part of Switzerland. About 20 percent of the country would call snowshoes “la raquette à neige” (French). About 65 percent would say “Schneeschuhe” (German), while some 7 percent call them “racchette da neve” (Italian). I have no idea what the Romansh-speaking Swiss would say, and Google can't help me. When going snowshoeing in Switzerland, the country can be divided into regions. We have the Swiss Plateau, which is around 30 percent of the country and between 400 and 700 meters (1,300- 2,300 feet) high. Snow is scarce in this area. Although, it's possible to make the occasional trip, it’s better to look at higher ranges. The best known area is the Alps, of course: With a high point of 4810m (15,782 ft.) on Mont Blanc (France) and 82 peaks more than 4,000m (13,123 ft.) high. -

Weisshorn-2015” by Aldo Maldonato
Comitato per l’Educazione Terapeutica organizzazione non lucrativa di utilità sociale 4th DAM Meeting, “Weisshorn-2015” by Aldo Maldonato Here we go again! The group of mountaineers with type 1 diabetes that has already climbed in 2012 Gran Paradiso (4061 m) and Tresenta (3609 m), in 2013 Castore (4228 m), Liskamm Nose (4272 m) and top of Mt Blanc (4810 m), and last year the Mischabel Dom (4545 m), this year spent a week around 4000 m, again in the Valais, Switzerland, making base in the village of Zinal, Val d'Anniviers. The mountaineering moments were alternated with meetings of Therapeutic Education, both with AM who took charge of organizing this new adventure, and with Jean Philippe Assal – the European father of therapeutic education – and with his wife Tiziana who for some years has collaborated with him enthusiastically. The suggestion has come as usual from Marco Peruffo, who for many years now keeps sharing his exceptional experience of diabetic mountaineer “in altitude” with common humans – affected or not by type 1 diabetes. His proposal arrived in January and found me in a delicate moment, because had just made a “coupon” that had put me back into shape, but had a little cracked my securities. Marco's stimulus served to remove doubts... and I started with the organization. The first answers were even too enthusiastic... so much to make me wonder if it was not the case to close the enrollments. Then, after reaching numbers that threatened to blow up the meager budget of the Comet, there were several waivers: most of them were timely due to family or work reasons, and two at the last minute due to slight indispositions. -

PEAKS and GLACIERS 2013 JOHN MITCHELL FINE PAINTINGS LONDON 2013 Marks the Centenary of Gabriel Loppé’S Death in Paris
PEAKS AND GLACIERS 2013 JOHN MITCHELL FINE PAINTINGS LONDON 2013 marks the centenary of Gabriel Loppé’s death in Paris. It is therefore a happy coincidence that, for the first time, we can offer for sale one of the large panoramas which he is known to have brought for exhibition here in London in the 1870s ( see page 7 ). The more we research Loppé’s life, his travels and his many paintings, the more we are intrigued by a story of innovation, determination and ceaseless activity. A comprehensive retrospective exhibition of his life’s work is long overdue: the principal achievement would surely be to re-unite the huge four-metre canvases still in Chamonix with the best of his plein-air oil sketches and pioneering photographs. Loppé’s chalet in Chamonix. Gabriel Loppé 1825-1913. PEAKS AND GLACIERS 2013 On view 17th January to 1st March 2013 All paintings and drawings are for sale unless otherwise stated.
