THE All Rights Reserved, National Library Board, Singapore The Story of The Stylers During the early 60s, The Shadows were one of the most popular instrumental groups among Singapore teenagers. Anyone who was capable enough to pick up a guitar and strum some musical chords would like to emulate themselves as The Shadows. This was also a boom period for local music with The Crescendos leading the charge towards stardom, followed by The Quests and others. Among the thousands of enthusiastic young lads who chased the dream of The Shadows were four teenagers from the East Coast area – Rahman, Frankie Abdullah, Idros and Randy Lee Keng. They teamed up as a basic band with 3 guitarists and a drummer and named themselves as The Angels, managed by Randy’s Uncle. Rahman was on lead guitar, Frankie on bass, Randy on rhythm and Idros on drums. When Rahman left the group in 1962, John Teo was his replacement on lead guitar and when Idros left, Osman replaced him as the group’s drummer. By then the group’s name has changed to The Rhythm Strikers. Most of their early days’ practice sessions were held at Joo Chiat Terrace. While performing at one of the functions organized by The Cathay Organization, the establishment’s manager, a Caucasian, suggested that the group take on another name change to The Stylers, since they were performing with a lot of style, commitment and showmanship on stage. As the group gained more confidence over time with frequent practices and party gigs etc, they decided to participate in the Cliff Richard & The Shadows contest organized by Shaw Organization in late 1962. To their own surprise, the group emerged as Runners-Up with Apache, 2nd to the eventual winners, The Stompers. Surprised was the feeling because there were more established groups during that period. A group called The Trekkers came in 3rd. Following this success, the group was offered several contracts and gigs over the island and even landed up with a 2-year Tea Dance contract at the popular Celestial Room at Amber Mansion, Orchard Road. Over the years there were more changes to the group’s line-up. • 'Talk of the Town', And, Later in the Year, in Cabaret Wi
1966 The group appeared with Cliff for a six-week spell at London’s ‘Talk Of The Town’, and, later in the year, in cabaret without Cliff at Bournemouth and South Shields. But they were with him for three further major projects, the films ‘Finders Keepers’ and (as puppets) ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’; and also (in the flesh) the pantomime ‘Cinderella’ which opened at the London Palladium on 10 December 1966. For all three, the first two especially, they penned a number of finely crafted vocal and instrumental pieces, which resulted in eponymous releases, an LP (which made No.6), an EP (No.6 again), and another LP put out in January 1967 (a mere No.30 for Cinderella , a very uneven set, the first Cliff Album not to make the Top 20). The high points for Cliff and The Shadows in the Singles department were the outstanding ‘Time Drags By’ (No.10) and ‘In The Country’ (yet another No.6), both group compositions. The Shadows fared less well with their own Singles, the first and third of which were vocals: [138] I MET A GIRL (No.22), [154] A PLACE IN THE SUN (No.24), [156] THE DREAMS I DREAM (No.42). [138] I MET A GIRL was eminently hummable, if not in the league of “a Rubber Soul outtake”, to which one reviewer likened it; nobody appears to have stopped to reflect that the elegant [154] A PLACE IN THE SUN, released in July, might have been wholly out of line with current market trends, as a glance at the Top 20 for the beginning of August, say, will reveal; as it happened though, Hank Marvin’s [156] THE DREAMS I DREAM, the most commercial-sounding by far and a composition that compares favourably with his later favourite [203] THE DAY I MET MARIE, was the one that gave them their lowest chart placing to date; it would be recorded by Cliff Richard without The Shadows on the 1968 Album Established 1958 .

Paul and his guests Olivia, Helen Reddy, Rosalind Kind, and Seals & Crofts communicated a personal concept about the beauty of love a beauty that was tapped perhaps only through musical expression.

• Appendix 1 Further Shadows Titles
APPENDIX 1 FURTHER SHADOWS TITLES The main body of this book is concerned with tracks issued between 1959 and 2004 and marketed through regular retail channels on vinyl and/ or compact disc. To provide a fuller picture of the range of music attempted by the group over the years, here is a list of other titles The Shadows are known to have performed on tour/ on stage, together with numbers from radio and TV. It includes vocal renditions of titles put out (whether before or after a given performance) as instrumentals. Indeed, nearly all of this ‘extra’ material is vocal, which by its very nature demands less precision and presumably significantly less in the way of rehearsal time, particularly for the lead guitarist, who can and usually does improvise in the solos assigned to him. Many of the items listed have been made available over the years on bootlegs of variable quality emanating chiefly from Holland, Italy, France and the UK. Sometimes, in an effort to play down the element of illegality, the dissemination of such material is represented as the (harmless, unselfish) activity of dedicated fans passing on privately taped music from one to another. Nonetheless, whether a given number is copied on to a cassette or a CD-R in a domestic setting, or finds its way into the hands of individuals or outfits with access to high-quality CD pressing plants, is in the last resort immaterial, especially as in the latter case, and certainly very commonly if not invariably in the former case too, money changes hands.
