You don’t want to miss this little known Disney Wall opportunity. Get your picture at the Jungle Cruise wall! This wall will be on the left when you exit the Jungle Cruise. You don’t need to ride Jungle Cruise to find it. In front of Pirates of the Caribbean, have your picture taken with the black mast/sails in the background. Bonus points if you can get Captain Jack in it! Treats and Eats Did you know you can order a whole, fried lionfish at Skipper Canteen? You have try it! Grab a turkey leg, short ribs, or hot dogs at Tortuga Tavern. Before you jet off from the Enchanted Tiki Room, stop by Aloha Isle for a Dole Whip or Dole Whip Float. They’re one of Disney’s most famous snacks! See if you can spot Orange Bird behind the counter at Sunshine Tree Terrace when you order your favorite swirl float. Unique Finds, Historical Tidbits, and More! Need cooling down? Visit the Misting Tiki’s between The Magic Carpets and Jungle Cruise. Pin traders seek out the secret treasure chest in Agrabah where mystery trades can be made. Ask a Cast Member in the Bazaar for details. See the golden camels standing outside of The Magic Carpets of Aladdin? Watch out, they spit! While Adventureland isn’t officially a spot for Peter Pan, keep an eye out. I’ve actually never seen him in his Neverland Meet and Greet area in Fantasyland, but always poking around near Pirates of the Caribbean looking for a codfish. While you’re around Pirates of the Caribbean, Meet Captain Jack at the stage across the plaza from the ride. Shops Til You Drop For your park day essentials like hats, cooling fans, sunblock, and trading pins, visit Bwana Bob’s Kiosk right over the bridge into Adventureland. You won’t have to worry about Street Rats picking your pockets at the Agrabah Bazaar. This marketplace is home to souvenirs of all kinds including plush, shirts, and even home goods like mugs and picture frames. Zanzibar Trading Company is part of the Agrabah Bazaar with unique souvenirs like African drums, safari hats, and beaded jewelry. When you need some shades from the desert sun of Agrabah, Island Supply by Sunglass Hut can hook you up. Find the latest and greatest or most shiny treasure in the world at Plaza Del Sol Caribe. Outside of Plaza Del Sol Caribe is a Swarovski Crystal Cart where you can find all kinds of Disney favorites in their crystal form. Before you start, decide if you want to split up into teams, work as individuals, or stick together to complete. Prizes can be determined by you. Whether you want to compete for a particular Disney Snack, over the decision of which ride to go on first, or simply bragging rights, it’s up to you. Starting from and returning to Tortuga Tavern, check all items off the list below and be the first to return to your group with appropriate evidence (photographic, fill in the blank, drag a witness back with you, anything to prove you completed the tasks below) to win. For a quicker version, set yourself 45 minutes to complete as many tasks as possible, the team with the most points wins. Scavenger Hunt Tasks: 1. Get your picture, individually or as a group, beneath the Adventureland Sign (2 Points) 2. Get a video of yourself singing along with the birds in The Enchanted Tiki Room (3 Points) 3.     How Theme Park Rides Adapted the Shooting Gallery Bobby Schweizer Texas Tech University Lubbock, Texas United States [email protected] Keywords Shooting galleries, theme parks, midways, arcades, media archeology EXTENDED ABSTRACT In 1998, Walt Disney Imagineering unveiled a new ride for Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom park in Orlando, Florida—one that introduced a new form of interactivity previously unseen in their parks. Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin was a hybrid attraction: part dark ride, part shooting gallery. Riders boarded Omnimover vehicles armed with two blaster guns mounted to the dashboard that could be aimed with a limited range of motion to defeat the Emperor Zurg. An LCD screen tallied the score as passengers spun their vehicles to position themselves to shoot at “Z” marked targets throughout the blacklight neon ride. With the creation of this attraction and, most recently the opening of the Star Wars Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, the dark ride has seemingly adopted the values of videogame interactivity. Yet, while a comparison to videogames seems obvious, this transition did not happen overnight and was, in fact, part of a long tradition of target shooting forms of play. The shooting gallery has always been a perennial entertainment form seen in fairs, carnivals, and amusement parks across the globe (Adams 1991). Emerging out of military and marksmanship traditions, these games emulate the practice of real target shooting in which a marksman stands at one end of a booth or range while shooting pellets at stationary or moving targets (Tucker and Tucker 2014). Played for prizes or bragging right, the simple act of aiming and pulling a trigger has undergone technological adaptations to automate the process, place it into new venues, and create new feedback loops that construct new player experiences intended for social interaction.

    “Disney-fying” Mother Nature in the Atomic Era: How Disneyland’s Portrayals of Nature Reflected Post-War Ideals of Family, Child-Rearing, and the Home, 1955-1966 Angela Hawk Abstract From Tom Sawyer’s Island to the world-famous Jungle Cruise, attractions at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California have long used ideal- ized images of nature to delight visitors. My research explores how these images reflected popular ideals of family at the height of Cold War politics and culture in America. Using a variety of primary and secondary sources, including archived Disney films, newsreel footage, magazine and journal articles, park brochures, employee manuals, and photographs, I have stud- ied Disneyland from its disastrous grand opening in 1955 up to the death of its namesake in 1966. I have discovered that nature was indeed a vital part of the Disneyland presentation and was, moreover, essential to its popularity among American families. Every natural element, from the park’s all-en- compassing earthen berm to the impeccably manicured trees of Main Street U.S.A., served to promote a sense of fantasy and safety that was both psy- chologically comforting to parents with “atomic anxiety” and appropriately stimulating for children raised on the principles of Dr. Benjamin Spock. So potent was this “Disney version” of nature, in fact, that most contempo- raries, rather than criticizing Walt Disney for his dramatic, anthropomor- phic treatments, lauded him for his conservationist attitude. Examining the appeal of the theme park from this perspective provides insight into precise- ly how and why Disneyland became one of the foremost cultural influences of the twentieth century.
