PaxsonI know it's a good biography of a star or director when I want to watch their movies after having just read about them. This was the case with Scott O' Brien's new biography of actress Ann Harding, who worked primarily at RKO in the 1930s. He tells about how the films came to be made, brief synopses, period reviews, and when available - anecdotes or behind-the-scenes stories of people who worked on them. Harding's personal life and her stage and television career are well covered in an interesting narrative, tying together countless bits of information gathered from newspapers and other period print material, as well as interviews with people who knew Miss Harding. There's one particularly riveting scene about a vacation-gone-bad as exciting as anything a good novelist could have written. Even in the final chapter, after Harding has passed away, O'Brien throws a surprise at you having to do with some research detective work. Lots of gorgeous photos of every stage of her life. If you are interested in Hollywood history, you'll enjoy this book whether you are already familiar with Ann Harding or not.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Reasons why Ann Harding was one of the highest paid actresses.By Krin AdamsThis book is a must have for anyone interested in the life and times of Ann Harding. Ann survived difficult times and was able to continue to act into her maturity. Anyone that wants to gain insight into this talented woman should have this book. The book is well written and does an excellent job of giving us information about early Hollywood. In her early stage career, she was playing the part of Shakespeare's Mac Duff and lost her voice while imitating a man's voice. During the play, she had to eat Vaseline to restore her voice. How many others had that kind of commitment? In all the years Hollywood has been producing movies, the sound of Ann's voice was one of a kind. The extensive training that Ann had and her ability to translate roles to her acting style is nothing short of genius and the reason she was one of the highest paid actresses. Ann's talent was truly unique allowing her to have a significant impact from stage to film to television. Thanks to Mr. O'Brien for bringing to our attention this story of such historical significance.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. long overdueBy Jane H. Otoolei've always been mad about ann harding, who was so uncommonly beautiful and serene onscreen at a time when the average actress was anything but. it's even hard to believe she was given a chance, but her talent was undeniable, and she did afterall have a notable stage career at a time when hollywood needed actors who knew how to speak! i recently saw her with in "condemned"--just fantastic. two such sublime actors bringing out the best in each other, even though the film itself is a little creaky! i love having a book about an actress i admire so much and one whom the world seems to have forgotten. well, it's their loss! now, if only someone would release "east lynne", i could die happy!

Ann Harding. Laurence Oliver, who starred with her in Westward Passage (1932), referred to her as an "angel." Director Henry Hathaway, who directed her and in Peter Ibbetson (1935), claimed she was a "bitch." Critics hailed her as the finest actress to venture from Broadway to Hollywood. The Ann Harding story follows her from humble beginnings as the daughter of a career army office who moved around constantly, to her youth settling in New York. After spending a year attending Bryn Mawr college, she found work as a clerk and freelance script reader with a film company. Then, she made her stage debut in 1921, and eight years later, she made her film debut in an early talkie, , opposite . She was the Gallant Lady (1933), an unwed mother, who gives up baby for adoption and hopes to get it back when the adoptive mother dies. Her unique, natural screen presence in Holiday (1930) earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. From 1929-1936, she reigned as cinema's "Gallant Lady." Her co-stars included Ronald Coleman, Mary Astor, Conrad Nagel, , Melvyn Douglas, , and , among many others. Ann's ethereal quality belied a passionate nature. Her affairs with three remarkably talented and very married men associated with the film industry could have easily outraged fans and quashed her career. Theater visionary-director Jasper Deeter, Ann's life-long mentor, remarked that Ann was a master at hiding her childish, stubborn temperament. Friends of Ann's daughter, Jane Otto, claim that despite Ann's highly publicized custody battles, she was a detached mother. In the 1950s and 1960s, she appeared extensively on American television in series such as The Defenders (1961), Dr. Kildare (1961), Ben Casey (1961), Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1961), and Burkersquo;s Law (1963). Scott Orsquo;Brienrsquo;s richly researched and illustrated biography draws heavily from Annrsquo;s family, friends, and personal papers. The book includes behind-the-scenes anecdotes, contemporary reviews, and synopses of Annrsquo;s films. He pays tribute to her career and unveils a complex portrait of one of stage and cinemarsquo;s most remarkable talents.

"Scott O'Brien has managed to come up with a thick, fact-filled, smart and very readable biography of this enormous talent.nbsp; Harding deserves to be known, and the public deserves to know her." Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Gate"Ann Harding-Cinema's Gallant Lady was well-researched and is nicely interspersed with photographs.nbsp; This book will make interesting reading for fans of Hollywood's Golden Age and theater buffs alike."
