Strategiset suunnittelupelit: SimCity ja Civilization Pekka Hytinkoski HY, Ruralia-instituutti [email protected] Kaupunginrakennus- ja sivilisaatiosimulaatio (managerointipelit) Will Wright julkaisi vuonna 1989 SimCity-pelin, joka sekä aloitti menestyksekkään SimCity-pelisarjan (yli 18 miljoonaa myytyä peliä), loi käsitteen Sim-pelit (Sims, SimEarth, SimGolf, SimFarm, Spore jne.) että rohkaisi muita tulevia strategiapelien suunnittelijoita (Sid Meier: Civilization-pelisarjat; Peter Molyneux: Populous-, Black and White-, Dungeon Keeper -pelisarjat; Settlers- pelisarja, Age of Empires –pelisarja, ”Tycoon-pelit” – esim. Sarjan kehuttu neljäs osa ilmestyi 2005, seuraavan viidennen osan odotetaan ilmestyvän loppuvuonna 2010. SimCity On open-ended –tyylinen strategia/managerointi-peli, jossa pelaajan tehtävä on rakentaa alusta lähtien toimiva ja taloudellisesti, ekologisesti ja sosiaalisesti kestävä kaupunki. Peli perustuu MIT:n professori Jay Forresterin Urban dynamics (1969) teokseen ja tietokonesimulaatioihin. Pelityyppejä on useita, ja eräs pelityyppi on opetuspelit, jotka pyrkivät opettamaan pelaajaa se- koittamalla viihteellisen peliympäristön ja arvokkaan tiedon. Erilaisia opetuspelejä voidaan suunnitella käytettä- viksi esim. kouluissa, politiikassa tai terveydenhoidossa. Pelisuunnittelu on monivaiheinen prosessi, joka vaatii suunnittelijalta tietokonepelien hyvien ja huonojen puolien tutkimista, ja hyvää luomiskykyä. Pelisuunnitteluun kuuluvat mm. opetuspelien vaatimusten, tavoitteiden ja koh- deryhmän määrittäminen sekä tarinan ja pelimekaniikan suunnittelu. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli tutkia tietokonepelien opetusmahdollisuuksia ja hyötyjä pelaajalle, sekä kartoittaa opetuspelien historiaa ja nykytilannetta. Työssä tarkasteltiin myös pelisuunnittelun teoriaa ja suunnitteluprosessin eri vaiheita ja tavoitteita sekä pelien hyötyjä eri käyttöympäristöissä. Abstract Scientific culture is not popular because the essential nature of science – the models and practices that make it up – cannot be communicated via conventional media in a manner that is interesting to the average person. These models and practices might be communicated in an interesting manner using the new medium of the digital game, yet very few digital games based upon scientific simulations have been created and thus the potential of such games to facilitate scientific knowledge construction cannot be studied directly. Scientific simulations have, however, been much used by scientists to facilitate their own knowledge construction, and equally, both simulations and games have been used by science educators to facilitate knowledge construction on the part of their students. -
