Abstract A detailed Middle and Late Pleistocene loess-palaeosol sequence is exposed at the Stari Slankamen section in the Vojvodina region (Serbia) con- sisting of seven loess layers intercalated by eight pedocomplexes. In this study we present results of luminescence dating of 12 samples collected from the upper part of the Stari Slankamen loess sequence in order to establish a more reliable chronological framework for this part of the sequence. 1. Introduction Loess-palaeosol sequences are sensitive indicators of 2006). Reliable numeric age estimates are still lacking for palaeoclimatic conditions and represent a potential archive most of the detailed loess successions, and hence, an to understand glacial-interglacial variability registered in appropriate interpretation of the terrestrial climate archives long continental records. Results of amino acid racemization geochronology confirmed middle- and late-Pleistocene ages of Ruma’s loess-paleosol sequences, and correlates with aminostratigraphic subdivisions at other Central European sites. Paleopedological analyses describe morphology, mineralogy, grain-size distribution and carbonate content of the sediments and paleosols. Five paleosol levels represent the environmental transition from humid forest environments to relatively dry steppe interglacial landscapes during the last about 350 ka. Especially interesting are thick pedogenic layers formed in distinct paleo-depressions, which were created during the last glacial cycle. These horizons provide proxy data useful in the detailed reconstruction of environmental conditions during marine oxygen-isotope stages 5 and 3. Key words: loess-paleosol sequences, paleopedology, Ruma section, Serbia. Project fact Sheet INĐIJA Water Treatment Plant in INđija and replacement of Well Pumps The municipality of Inđija is located in Serbia, Vojvodina province, the district of Srem. Water quality analysis of water in the existing water wells in Inđija indi- cated that some of chemical parameters fail to comply with the current Serbian potable water standards (primarily increased concentrations of iron, NH3 and NO3, but in some wells arsenic was also identified). The overall objective of the project was to provide potable water for the inhabitants and to contribute to the local economic development of the municipality. PROJECT GOALS TOTAL BUDGET: € 7.652.100 • To provide additional water sources capacity in order to ensure more reliable and stable water supply and enable connection of new EAR Grant: € 2.400.000 consumers (in Čortanovci, Ljukovo, Jarkovci); • Provision of the Water Distribution Network for villages Ljukovo and Municipal contribution: € 680.000 Jarkovci and connection to central water supply system in Inđia; Vojvodina Capital Investment Fund: € 2.737.100 • To improve overall water supply level of service and provide adequate potable water quality for all residents connected to the central water NIP: € 1.435.000 supply system in Inđija; Construction supervision, contingencies: € 400.000 • Transmission main Beška-Čortanovci to transfer potable water to settlement Čortanovci; • Construction of the 7 new wells: 4 in Inđija, one in Maradik, one in Beška and one in Novi Karlovci. PROJECT SUMMARY The specific objectives of the project were: • Provision of the potable water according to Serbian and international standards; • Increasing the attractiveness of the region as a location for investments, leading to increased volumes of investments in services and production; • Increasing levels of foreign trade activities based in region; • Increased tourism related income in the region.

Knowing and assessing the whole geodiversity of Serbia through study of individual phenomena is the starting point for their rational utilization and conservation. Considering the fact that criteria for geodiversity valuation are neither agreed upon nor acknowledged by regulations, basic principles for judging the significance of geodiversity are discussed and the main categories are proposed. Key words: Geoheritage, Serbia, procedures for evaluation, categories of non- -movable and movable geoheritage. INTRODUCTION “You cannot understand conservation without first having an appre- ciation of the value of the item to be conserved” (Cynthia Burek) Geodiversity is defined as the variety within the entire abiotic world, which encompasses the natural range (diversity) of geological (bedrock), 48 MARAN, A.: VALUING THE GEOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF SERBIA Fig. 1. - Map of protected natural monuments related to geoheritage till 1990 (source: Institute for nature protection of Serbia, modified). Living with a View of Carpathian Basin: Vinča-Belo Brdo, Serbia, in the Middle Bronze Age, AAC 52:39–63. The focus of the article is the Vatin culture settlement at the site of Vinča-Belo Brdo in Northern Serbia. The general idea is that this settlement, whose existence was relatively short in time, benefited from being established by the Danube — a great connective factor in the world of the Middle Bronze Age. It shares many characteristics with the contemporary settlements in the south- ernmost part of the Carpathian basin, starting from the position in the vicinity of the Danube, at the places which had already been settled in prehistory, prior to the Middle Bronze Age. Not only do they have pottery style in common, but the wider repertoire of finds illustrating the material culture. What’s more, comparison of the material remains from Vinča with the neighbouring sites from the left Danube bank enlightens how the Vatin culture was integrated into a wider space of the Bronze Age cultures of the Carpathian basin, influencing the Balkans hinterland, too.
