  • Parish Churches in the Diocese of Rochester, C. 1320-C. 1520
http://kentarchaeology.org.uk/research/archaeologia-cantiana/ Kent Archaeological Society is a registered charity number 223382 © 2017 Kent Archaeological Society PARISH CHURCHES IN THE DIOCESE OF ROCHESTER, c. 1320 - c. 1520 COLIN FLIGHT The core of this article is an alphabetical list of the parish churches belonging to the diocese of Rochester in the fifteenth century. Their distribution is shown by the accompanying map (Fig. 1). More precisely, the list as it stands describes the situation existing c. 1420; but information is also provided which will enable the reader to modify the list so that it describes the situation existing at any other chosen date between c. 1320 and c. 1520. Though many of the facts reported here may seem sufficiently well-known, the author is not aware of any previously published list which can claim to be both comprehensive in scope and accurate in detail. The information given below is all taken from primary sources, or, failing that, from secondary sources closely dependent on the primary sources. Where there is some uncertainty, this is stated. Apart from these admittedly doubtful points, the list is believed to be perfectly reliable. Readers who notice any errors or who can shed any further light on the areas of uncertainty should kindly inform the author. Before anything else, it needs to be understood that a large part of the diocese of Rochester did not come under the bishop's jurisdict- ion. More than thirty parishes, roughly one quarter of the total number, were subject to the archbishop of Canterbury. They constit- uted what was called the deanery of Shoreham.

  • Leaving Certificate History Case Study
LEAVING CERTIFICATE HISTORY CASE STUDY Meiler Magrath’s Clerical Career EARLY MODERN IRELAND: TOPIC 2 REBELLION AND CONQUEST IN ELIZABETHAN IRELAND, 1558-1603 A resource for teachers of Leaving Certificate History, developed by the National Library of Ireland in association with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment Written by: Dr Brian Kirby Steering Committee: Dr Ciaran Brady, Mr John Dredge, Dr Noel Kissane, Mr Gerry Lyne Contents Introduction 3 Biographical Notes 6 Glossary 9 List of abbreviations 11 Chronology of Meiler Magrath's life 12 Documents used in case study 14 Documents 16 2 Introduction Meiler Magrath was one of the most prominent and controversial figures of Elizabethan Ireland. He was born into a Gaelic ecclesiastical family in Fermanagh. His kin held the territory of *Termon Magrath which included St. Patrick’s Purgatory on Lough Derg. Meiler became a Franciscan friar and in October 1565 he was appointed bishop of Down and Connor by the Pope. Soon afterwards, however, he was captured by the English, took the oath of supremacy and conformed to Protestantism. Even though the exact circumstances of his conversion remain unknown, it is clear that Queen Elizabeth had enough faith in Magrath to appoint him bishop of Clogher in 1570 and promote him to the archbishopric of Cashel five months later. During his long clerical career he also received appointments to the bishoprics of Waterford and Lismore and Killala and Achonry. However, this brief sketch of Magrath’s life does little justice to a man who became an extremely influential political figure in the latter years of Elizabeth’s reign.

  • Hugh O'neill & Faith and Fatherland
FAITH AND FATHERLAND OR QUEEN AND COUNTRY? AN UNPUBLISHED EXCHANGE BETWEEN O'NEILL AND THE STATE AT THE HEIGHT OF THE NINE YEARS WAR Hiram Morgan Dúiche Néill: Journal of the O¹Neill country historical society, 1994. The four documents published here have been undeservedly neglected. O’Neill’s proclamation and two abortive government replies represent a unique debate in the history of sixteenth-century Ireland. The proclamation and the related twenty-two articles show O’Neill to have been a politician advancing a remarkably sophisticated ideology rather than simply a Gaelic warlord. Taken collectively these documents provide a glimpse of the real issues of sovereignty and religion at stake in the Tudor conquest, engendered as they were by a critical moment in its final and most decisive phase, the Nine Years War fought between 1594 and 1603. The objects of O’Neill’s propaganda and English counter- propaganda were the anglophone Catholics of Ireland. This group known to historians of the late middle ages as the Anglo-Irish and to early modernists as the Old English were of pivotal importance in Irish politics. In the following introduction I have attempted to situate the documents in their immediate context and to flesh out the main lines of argument developed in them. On 7 September 1599 the earl of Essex met O’Neill at the ford of Bellaclinthe. A week later he concluded a truce with the Ulster lord and on the 24th he suddenly left his Irish command without royal permission in a vain attempt to bolster his flagging reputation at Court.

Fisher in 1772. IN the ensuing work, very frequent are the references to the Registrum Roffense, a book published by John Thorpe, esq.; from the accurate MSS. of his father Dr. Thorpe, who was no less eminent for his knowledge of antiquities, than for his skill in physic: it would be ungrateful in the editor to omit acknowledging, how much labour and expence he has saved, by having an opportu= nity of examining in print, this curious and valuable collection of ancient deeds. He is likewise obliged to the reverend Mr. Aus= ten of Rochester, for some very useful and entertaining articles of information; and it is not without regret that he finds himself not at liberty to insert the names of several other ingenious and learned gentlemen, who have contributed their assistance; and especially of one, whose name would do honour to any publication; and by whose friendly communications, the editor has been enabled to give a clearer and more circumstantial account of some part of the ecclesiastical history of this city, and the neighbouring district, than he could otherwise have done.
