Published 1989 by FAMILY LINE PUBLICATIONS INTRODUCTION Every effort has been made to achieve accuracy in this project, but interpreting the enumerator's hand-written material has posed problems. As an aid to deciphering many poorly written and misspelled names, the "Wood's Baltimore City Directory, 1861" was consulted. When an entry was found in the Directory where the first name and occupation agreed with the Census listing and the surname appears to be similar, the City Directory spelling was added in brackets in the text and added to the index. The original enumeration at the National Archives was consulted for all proofreading. The enumerator took great liberties in the spelling of surnames. Sometimes when an entry for a household carried over from one page to another the enumerator changed the spelling of the surname. We have retained both spellings in this book. Surnames were occasionally spelled phonetically, e.g. the name written as Knobloch in the Baltimore City Directory appears as Noblock in the census. The user is cautioned to check the index for all possible variations. In some sections it is obvious that the information was transcribed from the original record column by column rather than across the page, line by line, with frequent misalignment of the data on a particular line. -

The Editors have the pleasure of issuing a second volume of Cornish Parish Registers , containing the marriages of 1 8 1 2 eight parishes complete to . These parishes have been selected from both the eastern and western parts of the county in the hope that thereby the interest in the work might be more widely diff used . This series represents the fi rst systematic attempt to supply all classes in Cornwall i with material for trac ng family history , and the Editors would especially emphasize the need there is for further support amongst Cornishmen to enable them to issue with suffi cient rapidity to complete all the parishes in the county - within a reasonable limit of time . Already twenty three parishes have been printed leaving about one hundred and no thirty eight yet to be done . There is reason why there should not be issued at least three volumes annually , meaning or . some thirty forty parishes , a year Then it would be possible to complete the whole county within three or four . s to years The boon that thi would be all Cornishmen , w ho are interested either in their family history , or in that of ‘ Cornwall generally , can easily be imagined . -

New South Wales Inquests, 1850; 24/03/08 SYD1850 MAITLAND MERCURY, 8/574, 02/01/1850 FATAL ACCIDENT. - On Friday an inquest was held before J.S. PARKER, Esq., coroner, on the body of Mr. JAMES MAW [MAN] , the well-known master of the Cygnet schooner, trading between Sydney and the Paterson River. It appeared from the evidence that Mr. Man was attending the Raymond Terrace races on Wednesday last, having ridden over from Lemon Grove, Paterson River, with Mr. THOMAS SWAN. Mr. Swan had a mare which he entered for the first race, and rode her himself; in the course of the race she stumbled and threw Mr. Swan over her head, and he was picked up insensible, but fortunately recovered. Towards evening Mr. Man made a match between the mare and another horse, to come off on the following morning, and although he knew she was a buck-jumper, he afterwards cantered her round the course, accompanied by Mr. WILLIAM FEARLEY, of Singleton. Observing that the mare looked skittish, Mr. Fearley called to Mr. Man to keep behind his horse, but the mare apparently got the better of Mr. Man, darted past Mr. Fearley’s horse, and almost immediately after buck-jumped with great violence, throwing Mr. Man over her head; he fell on his head and rolled over twice, and on Mr. Fearley dismounting he found Mr. Man insensible, and bleeding from the nose and mouth. After supporting Mr. Man a short time, and finding he did not recover, Mr. Fearley rode into Raymond Terrace for assistance, when Dr. -

WRIGHT PRINTER AND PUBLISHER 1 920 AUG 4 1 920 r*u 3 5?. i PREFACE J I NVESTIGATIONS in England as to the East Anglian Sher mans of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries made by the late Charles Atwood White, of New Haven, and the late Senator George Frisbie Hoar, suggested and inspired the work resulting in the compilation of the early genealogies in this volume. Begun with no intention of publication, it expanded to such extent as to seem worthy of reproduction in permanent form with the addition of the genealogies of later times. The great amount of information about some members of the family furnished by ancient English records is noteworthy and will perhaps lead to further discoveries. The absence of any com plete or satisfactory biography of Hon. Roger Sherman led to a more extended statement with regard to him than is custom ary in a genealogy. It is hoped that this will be appreciated by his numerous living descendants. Many of his descendants, those who have gone and those still living and other relatives mentioned, have attained distinction and honor in private life and public service. Errors and omissions occur in such a work in spite of every effort to be accurate and complete. -

R. B. PUGH Hampstead, October 1952 INTRODUCTION The Guild Stewards’ Book, sometimes described as the Burgus Book, is a large volume in the custody of the Town Clerk of Calne. The volume consists of 505 numbered folios of laid paper measuring 13.} by 1o inches, and is bound in what appears to be its original cover of limp vellum. It is made up of 32 sections each of 8 double pages which are sewn to 3 leather bands. The vellum cover, now much cracked and insecurely stitched, was originally attached by 3 similar bands tacketted to the outside; one of the bands is now missing. The cover has a wrap-over flap which was originally tied with a leather thong to secure the book when closed. -

The finding aid for West Florida was completed in 2013 and is available through the David Library’s website/blogsite (www.dlar.org). Now, the David Library makes available the second, complementary finding aid for East Florida. In addition to providing introductory information about East Florida and the East Florida microfilmed papers, these pages offer comparisons between the West Florida and East Florida British colonial experiences. Each introduction is important for the information it provides about its separate colony, but this one also contains certain comparative information. The information presented here is in summary form only, with the intent of guiding researchers toward interesting leads and directions for more complete investigating—including use of the West and East Florida Colonial Office papers. As with West Florida, the history of the British colony of East Florida represents a tiny microcosm of unique experience within the much larger history of the developing British Empire in the late 18th Century. As such, it provides for historians an interesting example of one small colony’s attempt to emulate the accepted model for imperial/colonial development—and its ultimate failure. -

English Book Owners in the Seventeenth Century: A Work in Progress Listing How much do we really know about patterns and impacts of book ownership in Britain in the seventeenth century? How well equipped are we to answer questions such as the following?: • What was a typical private library, in terms of size and content, in the seventeenth century? • How does the answer to that question vary according to occupation, social status, etc? • How does the answer vary over time? – how different are ownership patterns in the middle of the century from those of the beginning, and how different are they again at the end? Having sound answers to these questions will contribute significantly to our understanding of print culture and the history of the book more widely during this period. Our current state of knowledge is both imperfect, and fragmented. There is no directory or comprehensive reference source on seventeenth-century British book owners, although there are numerous studies of individual collectors. There are well-known names who are regularly cited in this context – Cotton, Dering, Pepys – and accepted wisdom as to collections which were particularly interesting or outstanding, but there is much in this area that deserves to be challenged. Private Libraries in Renaissance England and Books in Cambridge Inventories have developed a more comprehensive approach to a particular (academic) kind of owner, but they are largely focused on the sixteenth century. Sears Jayne, Library Catalogues of the English Renaissance, extends coverage to 1640, based on book lists found in a variety of manuscript sources. The recently-published Cambridge History of Libraries in Britain and Ireland (2006) contains much relevant information in this field, summarising existing scholarship, and references to this have been included in individual entries below where appropriate. -
