SIR, THOUGH it is certainly a presumption in me to offer this Volume to your notice, yet the many years I have been in the habit of friendship with you, as= sures me, that you will receive it, not for the worth of it, but as a mark of my grateful respect and esteem, and the more so I hope, as to you I am indebted for my first rudiments of antiquarian learning. You, Sir, first taught me those rudiments, and to your kind auspices since, I owe all I have attained to in them; for your eminence in the republic of letters, so long iv established by your justly esteemed and learned pub= lications, is such, as few have equalled, and none have surpassed; your distinguished knowledge in the va= rious records of the History of this County, as well as of the diplomatique papers of the State, has justly entitled you, through his Majesty’s judicious choice, in preference to all others, to preside over the reposi= tories, where those archives are kept, which during the time you have been entrusted with them, you have filled to the universal benefit and satisfaction of every one.

DOI: 5 The Clergy at the Courts of George I and George II STEPHEN TAYLOR In the years between the Reformation and the revolution of 1688 the court lay at the very heart of English religious life. Court bishops played an important role as royal councillors in matters concerning both church and commonwealth. 1 Royal chaplaincies were sought after, both as important steps on the road of prefer- ment and as positions from which to influence religious policy.2 Printed court sermons were a prominent literary genre, providing not least an important forum for debate about the nature and character of the English Reformation.

  • Covington Family History As Pertains to Our Lineage, I Came Upon Eurie Coving- Ton White’S, Covington Cousinsa, Which Seemed to Be A
James L. (Lou) Poole 328 Forest Grove Drive, Richardson, TX Not For Publication [email protected] Book 3, Chapter 3 Covington Family (Revised & Expanded) The Covington family is connected to the McCown family through the marriage of Mar- tha Wall Covington to James J. Gathings [Chapter 2] on 5 April 1838.1 Their daughters, Mattie (Martha Wall Texanna) and Emma Davis Gathings, both married James McCown [Chapter 1]. COVINGTON NAME The following discussion of the Covington name was taken from Covington’s Covington and Kin, and is apparently the result of earlier research by Vaden Covington. “Covington originates from ‘Kolbin’ which the Norseman, Turgesin brought with him when the invaded Northern Ireland in 831 A.D. It was translated by the Irish as ‘Covan.’ In the migration to Scotland the name became ‘Cova.’ In the further migration to England the name became ‘Cov,’ ‘Ing’ meaning people, and ‘Ton’ meaning town. Thus town of Cov’s people or Covington.”2 From the above source, it is apparent that the name ‘Covington,’ or its derivative (or antecedent), is known in Ireland, Scotland and England. As with any theory of the origin of names, there are not surprisingly different versions of the origin, any or all of which (at least in part) may be true. Given the above theory that the name migrated from Norsemen to Irishmen to Scots to Englishmen, Mr. Covington provides us with a sampling of the name origin from each country. Ireland. “The name Covington originated from the old Norse name Kolbeinn. In Ireland, it translated as Columban and by some scribes Colban.

COTTON MATHER’S RELATIONSHIP TO SCIENCE by JAMES DANIEL HUDSON Under the Direction of Dr. Reiner Smolinski ABSTRACT The subject of this project is Cotton Mather’s relationship to science. As a minister, Mather’s desire to harmonize science with religion is an excellent medium for understanding the effects of the early Enlightenment upon traditional views of Scripture. Through “Biblia Americana” and The Christian Philosopher, I evaluate Mather’s effort to relate Newtonian science to the six creative days as recorded in Genesis 1. Chapter One evaluates Mather’s support for the scientific theories of Isaac Newton and his reception to natural philosophers who advocate Newton’s theories. Chapter Two highlights Mather’s treatment of the dominant cosmogonies preceding Isaac Newton. The Conclusion returns the reader to Mather’s principal occupation as a minister and the limits of science as informed by his theological mind. Through an exploration of Cotton Mather’s views on science, a more comprehensive understanding of this significant early American and the ideological assumptions shaping his place in American history is realized.

PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BY .•.• tht: PRINl'shop OF DIXON, ILLINOIS ' ' This little book is dedicated to those who have sensed the thrill of unraveling their family mystery stories and the quiet satisfaction that comes from traveling vicariously with generations of grandparents long unknown. It is hoped that, at least in Wisconsin, it may make their searching a little easier. ERRATA II p. 2, Line 31 should read: "Spelling was an imprecise art in times past, Line 38 should read: 11 Jorndt, while the other (Fern Smith, #1815 .... 11 p. 126, Lines 70, 71, & 72, the spouses in column 4 should be Ann Eliza Taylor, George J. Background of the Pioneer and Century Certificate Project Even before the impetus of the Bicentennial year and the appearance of Alex Haley's Roots, more and more people were becoming interested in genealogy. Fifty years ago, the word was apt to mean an exercise aimed at qualifying for membership in an exclusive society. Today, its meaning has broadened to acconnnodate an increased awareness of the value of family and national heritages. Realization has come, too, that in a time of great social change, the knowledge of these--placing the individual, as it were, in a context--can stabilize and illuminate the sense of self.

  • Parish Churches in the Diocese of Rochester, C. 1320-C. 1520
http://kentarchaeology.org.uk/research/archaeologia-cantiana/ Kent Archaeological Society is a registered charity number 223382 © 2017 Kent Archaeological Society PARISH CHURCHES IN THE DIOCESE OF ROCHESTER, c. 1320 - c. 1520 COLIN FLIGHT The core of this article is an alphabetical list of the parish churches belonging to the diocese of Rochester in the fifteenth century. Their distribution is shown by the accompanying map (Fig. 1). More precisely, the list as it stands describes the situation existing c. 1420; but information is also provided which will enable the reader to modify the list so that it describes the situation existing at any other chosen date between c. 1320 and c. 1520. Though many of the facts reported here may seem sufficiently well-known, the author is not aware of any previously published list which can claim to be both comprehensive in scope and accurate in detail. The information given below is all taken from primary sources, or, failing that, from secondary sources closely dependent on the primary sources. Where there is some uncertainty, this is stated. Apart from these admittedly doubtful points, the list is believed to be perfectly reliable. Readers who notice any errors or who can shed any further light on the areas of uncertainty should kindly inform the author. Before anything else, it needs to be understood that a large part of the diocese of Rochester did not come under the bishop's jurisdict- ion. More than thirty parishes, roughly one quarter of the total number, were subject to the archbishop of Canterbury. They constit- uted what was called the deanery of Shoreham.

IN the ensuing work, very frequent are the references to the Registrum Roffense, a book published by John Thorpe, esq.; from the accurate MSS. of his father Dr. Thorpe, who was no less eminent for his knowledge of antiquities, than for his skill in physic: it would be ungrateful in the editor to omit acknowledging, how much labour and expence he has saved, by having an opportu= nity of examining in print, this curious and valuable collection of ancient deeds. He is likewise obliged to the reverend Mr. Aus= ten of Rochester, for some very useful and entertaining articles of information; and it is not without regret that he finds himself not at liberty to insert the names of several other ingenious and learned gentlemen, who have contributed their assistance; and especially of one, whose name would do honour to any publication; and by whose friendly communications, the editor has been enabled to give a clearer and more circumstantial account of some part of the ecclesiastical history of this city, and the neighbouring district, than he could otherwise have done.

The proliferation of such studies has made. it ever more difficult to retain a sense of the particularity of the Enlightenment and a grasp of its synergy. The situation has been long in the making and is associated with the success of the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and of the Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth-Century. Some time ago John Lough in an illuminating article made a plea for a return to an older 'history of thought' pattern of study. For all its attractions that would hardly solve the problem of defining Enlightenment and locating it within eighteenth-century culture and society.
