This section evaluates potential hazardous materials and health and safety impacts, including the potential for hazardous materials to be encountered during project construction, for hazardous materials and/or hazardous wastes to be released into the environment during project construction and operation, and for project implementation to result in increased hazards related to wildland fires. The potential for project operations to interfere with ongoing remediation activities is addressed in Section 4.4, Groundwater Resources. The term “hazardous materials” refers to both hazardous substances and hazardous wastes. Under federal and state laws, certain materials, including wastes, may be considered hazardous if they are specifically listed by statute as such or if they are poisonous (toxicity); can be ignited by open flame (ignitability); corrode other materials (corrosivity); or react violently, explode, or generate vapors when mixed with water (reactivity).
