Beat Streuli, a Swiss photographer who started working in the 1980s, has presented his works in cities around the globe. Presently based in Zurich and Brussels, he has been actively working all over Europe and in many other parts of the world. He first received attention for his series from the early 1990s; some of this work was photographed in Rome, Paris, and New York. Streuli takes photographs of local people in public places, often with a telephoto lens, focusing on them and their ordinary lives. He has begun to work more outside of Europe and the United States, in both Western and non-Western countries. Recently, his work has started to include more non-figurative, almost abstract elements. At the beginning of his career, Streuli produced and presented his works as small format and black and white photographs, but in the early 1990s, he developed new forms of presentation, working with floor to ceiling, multi-screen slide and video projections. He also started working with large scale images installed on the façades of public buildings in various cities, and with monumental billboard installations. For the past twenty years, Streuli's work has been frequently exhibited around the world; he has also realized many temporary and permanent projects in public spaces. -

PROGRAM ABSTRACTS FOR THE 15TH TRIENNIAL SYMPOSIUM ON AFRICAN ART Africa and Its Diasporas in the Market Place: Cultural Resources and the Global Economy The core theme of the 2011 ACASA symposium, proposed by Pamela Allara, examines the current status of Africa’s cultural resources and the influence—for good or ill—of market forces both inside and outside the continent. As nation states decline in influence and power, and corporations, private patrons and foundations increasingly determine the kinds of cultural production that will be supported, how is African art being reinterpreted and by whom? Are artists and scholars able to successfully articulate their own intellectual and cultural values in this climate? Is there anything we can do to address the situation? These overlaps have at times excluded contemporary African art from exhibitions and collections and, at other times, transformed its research and display into a contested terrain. At a moment when many museums with so‐called ethnographic collections are expanding their chronological reach by teasing out connections between traditional and contemporary artistic production, many museums of Euro‐American contemporary art are extending their geographic reach by globalizing their curatorial vision. -

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract This study examines the potential for contemporary visual art to reinvigorate democracy in 21st century Nairobi, Kenya, through an interdisciplinary investigation. The new millennium ushered in fresh hope for democratisation in the postcolonial East African country. In 2002, Daniel arap Moi’s 24 years of authoritarian rule ended. The opposition were victorious at the ballot box, instilling a belief amongst the electorate that formal political processes could bring change. However, the post-election violence of 2007/8 shattered such convictions. But, from this election result came a progressive Constitution and with it possibilities for creating change. These momentous events underscore Kenya’s topsy-turvy path towards democracy – a path whose trajectory is charted in the experience of ordinary Kenyans who believe in democracy’s value and their right to participate in politics and civil life. Artists, too, have been at the forefront of this ongoing struggle. This study draws on empirical research to demonstrate contemporary visual art’s capacity to expand ways of practising, experiencing and understanding democracy. -

Streuli has developed an impressive body of work in photography and video that documents the transient pedestrian activity of urban life. His images of people moving through and among one another blur the line between portraying anonymity and individuality. His art is fuelled by his interest in the movements of people in large cities around the world, in Asia, Europe, the U.S., Africa, and Australia. The dramatically slowed video images, which represent an ever-changing sea of pedestrians -- bodies and faces navigating through a given city -- offer a moving social portrait of contemporary society. "Streuli's images are typically suggestive and ambiguous, and precisely because they so often depict people in transition, they effectively conjure an entire rolling era marked by restlessness, wandering, speed, and displacement." -- Gregory Volk, independent curator and writer for "Art in America". Dossier de presse Exposition : 22.06 – 13.07.2016 Vernissage : mercredi 22 juin 2016, de 18h à 21h, en présence de l’artiste Michael von Graffenried, Changing Rio Nous sommes heureux de vous présenter Changing Rio la nouvelle série de Michael von Graffenried. Connu pour son travail sur la guerre civile en Algérie et au Soudan, ses installations en public sur la drogue en Suisse et sur la ville de Varanasi en Inde, et plus récemment sa série sur l’Oktoberfest à Munich (publiée sous le titre Bierfest aux Éditions Steidl), Michael von Graffenried avait voyagé dans le monde entier à l’exception de l’Amérique du Sud. Le photographe suisse a découvert récemment ce continent et ce portrait en images de Rio de Janeiro est le résultat de plusieurs séjours dans la mégapole pendant ces deux dernières années. Alors que Rio de Janeiro, deuxième ville du Brésil, et ses 12 millions d’habitants a hébergé la Coupe du Monde de Foot il y a deux ans et s’apprête à accueillir les Jeux olympiques cet été et alors que le pays souffre d’une crise politique autour d’un énorme scandale de corruption, le photographe dresse le portrait de la transformation de cette métropole et de sa population dans sa diversité. Ouvriers du bâtiment s’affairant à construire la cité olympique - mais aussi de nouvelles autoroutes et des lignes de métro - enfants jouant dans les favelas (où vit près d’un tiers de la population), policiers et soldats en intervention musclée ou cariocas profitant de la plage, comme à son habitude le photographe met l’humain au centre de ses photos.
