In Galicia, Spain (1860-1936)
Finisterra, XXXIII, 65, 1998, pp. 117-128 SUBSTATE NATION-BUILDING AND GEOGRAPHICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF ‘THE OTHER’ IN GALICIA, SPAIN (1860-1936) JACOBO GARCÍA -ÁLVAREZ 1 Abstract: The ‘social construction’ of otherness and, broadly speaking, the ideological-political use of ‘external’ socio-spatial referents have become important topics in contemporary studies on territorial identities, nationalisms and nation-building processes, geography included. After some brief, introductory theoretical reflections, this paper examines the contribution of geographical discourses, arguments and images, sensu lato , in the definition of the external socio-spatial identity referents of Galician nationalism in Spain, during the period 1860-1936. In this discourse Castile was typically represented as ‘the other’ (the negative, opposition referent), against which Galician identity was mobilised, whereas Portugal, on the one hand, together with Ireland and the so-called ‘Atlantic-Celtic nationalities’, on the other hand, were positively constructed as integrative and emulation referents. Key-words : Nationalism, nation-building, socio-spatial identities, external territorial referents, otherness, Spain, Galicia, Risco, Otero Pedrayo, Portugal, Atlantism, pan-Celtism.
Changing Environments During the Middle-Upper
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Changing environments during the Middle-Upper Palaeolithic transition in the eastern Cantabrian Received: 12 June 2018 Accepted: 10 September 2018 Region (Spain): direct evidence Published: xx xx xxxx from stable isotope studies on ungulate bones Jennifer R. Jones 1,2, Michael P. Richards 3, Lawrence G. Straus4, Hazel Reade5, Jesús Altuna6, Koro Mariezkurrena6 & Ana B. Marín-Arroyo 1,7 Environmental change has been proposed as a factor that contributed to the extinction of the Neanderthals in Europe during MIS3. Currently, the diferent local environmental conditions experienced at the time when Anatomically Modern Humans (AMH) met Neanderthals are not well known. In the Western Pyrenees, particularly, in the eastern end of the Cantabrian coast of the Iberian Peninsula, extensive evidence of Neanderthal and subsequent AMH activity exists, making it an ideal area in which to explore the palaeoenvironments experienced and resources exploited by both human species during the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition. Red deer and horse were analysed using bone collagen stable isotope analysis to reconstruct environmental conditions across the transition. A shift in the ecological niche of horses after the Mousterian demonstrates a change in environment, towards more open vegetation, linked to wider climatic change. In the Mousterian, Aurignacian and Gravettian, high inter-individual nitrogen ranges were observed in both herbivores. This could indicate that these individuals were procured from areas isotopically diferent in nitrogen. Diferences in sulphur values between sites suggest some variability in the hunting locations exploited, refecting the human use of diferent parts of the landscape. An alternative and complementary explanation proposed is that there were climatic fuctuations within the time of formation of these archaeological levels, as observed in pollen, marine and ice cores. -

The Life-Span of a Small High Mountain Lake, the Vordere Blaue Gumpe in the Bavarian Alps
Sediment Dynamics and the Hydromorphology of Fluvial Systems (Proceedings of a symposium held in 72 Dundee, UK, July 2006). IAHS Publ. 306, 2006. The life-span of a small high mountain lake, the Vordere Blaue Gumpe in the Bavarian Alps DAVID MORCHE1, CHRISTIAN KATTERFELD2, SEBASTIAN FUCHS1 & KARL-HEINZ SCHMIDT1 1 Department of Geography, Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, D-06099 Halle, Germany [email protected] 2 Department of Geography, University of Basel, Klingelbergstrasse 27, CH-4056 Basel, Switzerland Abstract The Reintal valley in the Wetterstein Mountains in Upper Bavaria has been dammed by large rockslide deposits in some localities. Behind one of the dams a small lake, the Vordere Blaue Gumpe, was still in existence until 23 August 2005. The lake was a natural sediment sink, decoupling an area of about 1.6 km2 from fluvial sediment export out of the sediment cascade of the Reintal valley. The bergsturz event occurred about 200 years ago. It was dated by evaluating historical maps, paintings, photographs and sketches. Present research is focused on multi-temporal changes of the alluvial deposits of the delta by analysis of aerial photos and geodetic surveying. Volume loss of the lake is closely related to bed load input during extreme events and shows the geomorphic coupling of hillslope and channel systems. From regression analyses of the annual volumetric change of the lake volume, the life-expectancy of the lake was estimated to be about 15 years, before an extreme high magnitude event in August 2005 filled the lake completely with sediment. Now, after the filling of the lake, with the coupling of the catchment area of the Vordere Blaue Gumpe to downstream fluvial sediment export, higher solid load transport is expected in the lower reaches with possible negative effects on infrastructure. -
