This special town in the Bavarian Alps plays host to the Passion Play only once every 10 years. This morning and afternoon are dedicated to the Passion Play. (B,D) First performed in 1634, the Oberammergau Passion Play was created from a vow made by the inhabitants of the village. The bubonic plague was wreaking havoc in the region and the villagers asked God if they were spared from the effects of the plague, they would perform a ‘passion play’ every 10 years. A man returning home for Christmas brought the plague with him and it began to spread through Oberammergau. Once the villagers made their vow, no other resident got the plague and all those suffering from it, returned to health. The play is performed in years ending in zero and involves over 2,000 actors, singers, technicians and instrumentalists that are all residents of Oberammergau. Day 6 | Obergammerau – Füssen After breakfast, we continue our tour along the Romantic Road to the Bavarian spa town of Füssen. This is the highlight of many a trip to Germany. We will visit and tour the fantasyland nearby the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. (B) The castle Neuschwanstein of Ludwig II is one of the most visited castles and fortresses in Europe. The architecture and interior furnishings reflect the historically and eclectically oriented ideals of the Bavarian ‘Fairytale King’. Bavaria & Austria featuring Oberammergau Your Itinerary (continued) Schloss Neuschwanstein has some interesting features: • It is built on a jagged cliff 6 feet above the valley floor. • Open to the public since 1886. • Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle is modeled after it Reference to Schwangau Castle dates from the 12th Century. That said, over the centuries, the castle had been badly damaged. The castle was acquired by Prince Maximillian in 1832 and restored to today’s Hohenschwangau Castle – a process taking 5 years to complete. Day 7 | Füssen - Innsbruck Füssen sits on amongst the Bavarian Alps enshrined by clear blue lakes. The town itself is a great visit and there are many trails in the area for those wishing to take a nice walk. There’s many reasons to linger in Füssen.
