30th Annual NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA EMMY AWARDS
The 30th Annual Northern California Area EMMY Awards were presented tonight at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
The Best Newscast Large Market went to KXTV, Sacramento and the Best Newscast Small Market went to KFSN, Fresno.
There were 56 Emmys awarded in 48 categories. KTVU received 8 followed by TechTV 7, KPIX 5, and KGO, KQED, KRON and KSNO each with 4. The ballots were tallied by accounting firm of Spalding & Company, San Francisco.
The program “Inside Corcoran: Where Hell Begins” received Emmys for Documentary, Audio/Sound, Editing Program and Musical Composition. KTVU Editor Steve Shlisky was the only person to take home three statues. 125 individual statues were awarded during the ceremony.
The EMMY is awarded by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. San Francisco/Northern California is one of the eighteen chapters awarding local Emmys. Northern California is composed of television and cable stations from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries were aired during the 2000 calendar year.
The highest honor the local chapter presents is the Governors’ Award which went to KTVU Univision 14’s news anchor Luis Echegoyen. Governors’ Service Medallions were awarded to KGO editor, Lynn R Friedman and KTVU design director Deanne Moenster.
Three $2,000 scholarships were awarded to Catherine Harris, San Francisco State University (Writing), Daniel McKinney, University of California, Berkeley (Production) and Brodie Brazil, San Jose State University (Videography).
The event was hosted by Brian Sussman, former weathercaster at KPIX, and Janelle Marie, weathercaster at KSBW, Salinas and new morning traffic reporter for KRON. The evening continued with dinner and dancing at the Exploratorium. The entire event was webcast live at www.emmys2001.tv and will be broadcast on KCSM-TV channel 60 on Wednesday, May 16th at 10 p.m.
