LABOUR and TECHNOLOGY in the CAR INDUSTRY. Ford Strategies in Britain and Brazil
LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY. Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil Elizabeth Bortolaia Silva Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD, Imperial College of Science and Technology University of London May 1988 LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil ABSTRACT This thesis looks at aspects of recent changes in international competition in the car industry. It examines the implications of the changes for the relationship between technology and work and it considers how strategies of multinational corporations interact with different national contexts. It is based on a case-study of the Ford Motor Company in its two largest factories in Britain and Brazil, Dagenham and São Bernardo. Chapter 1 describes existing theoretical approaches to comparative studies of technology and work, criticizes technological and cultural determinist approaches and argues for a method that draws on a 'historical regulation' approach. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 describe the long-term background and recent shifts in the pattern of international competition in the motor industry. In particular they look at important shifts in the late 1970s and 1980s and at Ford's changes in management structure and product strategy designed to meet these challenges. Chapter 5 considers recent debates on international productivity comparisons and presents a fieldwork-based comparison of the production process at Dagenham and São Bernardo. The description shows the importance of issues other than technology in determining the flexibility and quality of production. In different national contexts, 2 different mixes of technology and labour can produce comparable results. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 look at the national and local contexts of industrial relations in the two countries to throw light on the different patterns of change observed in the factories. -

Cross-Country Comparison of Substitution Patterns in the European Car Market
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Research Papers in Economics Cross-country comparison of substitution patterns in the European car market Paper submitted to obtain the degree of Master of Advanced Studies in Economics Faculty of Business and Economics K.U. Leuven, Belgium Supervisor: Frank Verboven. Discussant: Patrick Van Cayseele Candidate: Victoria Oliinik January 2007 Abstract AIMS. Using recent data on sales, prices and product characteris- tics of new passenger vehicles sold in Europe’s seven largest markets during years 2000 through 2005, I estimate a demand function us- ing two approaches to the differentiated product demand estimation: the Logit and the Nested Logit. For the Nested Logit model, I use nests that roughly correspond to segmentation used in the automo- bile industry. I then compare substitution patterns resulting from Logit and Nested Logit specifications across countries and segments. FINDINGS. Regression outcomes demonstrate strong evidence of seg- mentation. Consumer preferences are strongly correlated for the most basic as well as for the luxury and sports segments, whereas core seg- ments display more heterogeneity. While car size preference varies across countries, Europeans typically like high and wide cars and dis- like long cars. Engine performance appreciation appears to have a curved shape: consumers are willing to pay for a fast car but at a de- creasing rate. Compared to their neighbors, Germans shop the most for premium brands yet display strongest price sensitivity, whereas most concerned about fuel consumption are the Brits. Aside from a few exceptions, all elasticities are within expected range, substitu- tion patterns vary mainly across segments but follow a similar pattern across countries. -
Shades of Green Which Low-Carbon Cars Are the Most Eco-Friendly?
Shades of Green Which low-carbon cars are the most eco-friendly? Luca Lytton May 2011 i Foreword The Royal Automobile Club’s RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge was unique. It showcased scores of the most advanced green vehicles in front of hundreds of thousands of eager spectators – the very people who must buy the cars on display if there is to be a green transport revolution. If the event achieved only one thing, it was to demonstrate that determining how drivers can realistically do their bit to save the planet is a complex matter. There is no simple answer, in part because we have yet to adequately define the question. Is the most eco-friendly car the one which uses the least energy, or the one generating fewest CO2 emissions? Should environmental impact be considered solely in relation to each journey a vehicle makes? What about the manufacture and distribution of fuel? This report graphically illustrates how the green credentials of cars alter significantly depending on which angle you view them from. For all of us who run a car this is not an academic exercise. Over the coming decades the make-up of the vehicle parc will change dramatically as manufacturers encourage us to buy their latest electric, hybrid or hydrogen-powered cars on the basis of their environmental performance. Since the beginning of this year the Government has been offering grants of up to £5,000 for those early adopters who are ready to take the plunge and commit to buying an ultra-green car – that which produces 75 gCO2/km or less. -
