Met o.a. • The White Possession of Detroit in Jim Jarmusch’S Only Lovers Left Alive Matthew J
1 ‘Your Wilderness’: The White Possession of Detroit in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive Matthew J. Irwin American Studies, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico ([email protected]) Abstract After a decade of accelerated disinvestment and depopulation, Detroit (re)appeared in the national imaginary as “urban frontier” open for (re)settlement by (mostly white) creative entrepreneurs. Recently, scholars have begun to address the ways in which this frontier rhetoric underscores a settler colonial discourse of erasure for the purpose of land acquisition and (re)development. The post-industrial landscape assumes a veil of wildness and abandon that arouses settler colonial desire for land through a narrative of white return that relies not just on a notion black criminality or ineptitude, but also more fundamentally on an assumption of deferred white possession. Though this work has productively described the settler colonial conditions of racialized (re)development in the Motor City, it has remained tied to a binary of black/white relations. It has ignored, therefore, white possession as a process that mythologizes and absorbs Indigenous history and delegitimizes Indigenous people. In this paper I read Jim Jarmusch’s 2014 vampire film Only Lovers Left Alive as a “landscape of monstrosity” that inadvertently and momentarily recovers Indigenous and African American presence in moments of erasure and absence. Where the film centers on a white vampire elite and suggests a “zombie” white working class, the Detroit landscape recovers African Americans through their invisibility (as ghosts) and Native Americans through savage or regressed nature (as werewolves). More broadly, I argue that Only Lovers Left Alive actively participates in an ideological process of (re)settlement that disguises land speculation (and its inherently disruptive cycles of uneven development) in a renewed frontier mythology.

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this paper is to focus on the unique and clear language of Jım Jarmusch who is an independent and minimalist director. It is possible to see unique, special kinds of music in most of his movies.

  • The Dead Don't Die Le Figaro

Roles followed in two one-off television dramas co-produced by HBO and the BBC. The first was Conspiracy (2001), a film surrounding the story of the Wannsee Conference in 1942 to consolidate the decision to exterminate the Jews of Europe. The film prompted Tom’s first encounter with Kenneth Branagh who took the lead role of Heydrich. The second project came in 2002 in the critically acclaimed and Emmy Award- winning biopic of Winston Churchill The Gathering Storm, starring Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave. Tom played the role of Randolph Churchill, Winston’s son, and cites that particular experience – working alongside Finney and Redgrave, as well as Ronnie Barker, Tom Wilkinson, and Jim Broadbent – as extraordinary; one that changed his perspective on the art, craft and life of an actor. Tom graduated from RADA in 2005, and within a few weeks was cast as Oakley in the British independent film Unrelated by first-time director Joanna Hogg. Unrelated tells the story of a woman in her mid-40s who arrives alone at the Italian holiday home of an extended bourgeois family.

Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2019 0 ABSTRACT This thesis employs popular culture texts (works of literature, film, and popular music) as companions to the understanding of contemporary America. It is about artworks that form a cultural resistance that enables the appreciation of social issues and cultural decline in the United States. The authors of these artworks are novelist Paul Auster, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, and musician Tom Waits. Born between the late 1940s and the early 1950s, in different parts of the United States, Auster, Jarmusch, and Waits have produced a series of works that share strong similarities. In their novels, films, and songs, they portray an imagined “Other America” that is in stark contrast with the idyllic vision of the American Dream. Their America does not coincide with conventional middle-class values and goals of success, money and social upward mobility. It is an open, tolerant, and egalitarian country inhabited by marginalized “other Americans” who never escape from poverty and failure.

  • Jim Jarmusch on Not Wasting Time
July 10, 2017 - Jim Jarmusch is an American film director, screenwriter, actor, producer, editor, and composer. In addition to directing over a dozen films over the past three decades, Jarmusch plays guitar in SQÜRL, a band he formed with frequent collaborators Carter Logan and Shane Stoneback. The band will release a new record, EP #260, this summer. In discussing his varied creative practice, Jarmusch explains what motivates him: "I consider myself a dilettante, not in a negative way, but because I have interests in a lot of different things and I want to try and do them. I'm not necessarily a master of anything." As told to T. Cole Rachel, 2315 words. Tags: Art, Music, Film, Process, Independence, Multi-tasking, Success, Inspiration, Focus. Jim Jarmusch on not wasting time You’re busy juggling a variety of projects, including working on a new film and playing in a band. Are you someone who thrives on being busy? I didn’t use to. I used to only do one thing at a time, but in the last 10 years I’ve really changed dramatically and now I do a lot of things at the same time. I don’t know, something changed in me. I guess I realized how fast life was going by. When I don’t have the pressure of a specific plan, I just do a lot of things. Whereas if I have a plan, sometimes it’s kind of daunting to take on other stuff. I’m also coming up on that dreaded period of time that involves me getting financing together for a new film.

(My script was partially inspired by the last book published by Mark Twain: The Diaries of Adam and Eve -- though no direct reference to the book is made other than the character’s names.) These two lovers are archetypal outsiders, classic bohemians, extremely intelligent and sophisticated -- yet still in full possession of their animal instincts.
