Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2019 0 ABSTRACT This thesis employs popular culture texts (works of literature, film, and popular music) as companions to the understanding of contemporary America. It is about artworks that form a cultural resistance that enables the appreciation of social issues and cultural decline in the United States. The authors of these artworks are novelist Paul Auster, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, and musician Tom Waits. Born between the late 1940s and the early 1950s, in different parts of the United States, Auster, Jarmusch, and Waits have produced a series of works that share strong similarities. In their novels, films, and songs, they portray an imagined “Other America” that is in stark contrast with the idyllic vision of the American Dream. Their America does not coincide with conventional middle-class values and goals of success, money and social upward mobility. It is an open, tolerant, and egalitarian country inhabited by marginalized “other Americans” who never escape from poverty and failure. -

Jim Jarmusch's vampire story unfolds around the medium of the record, dealing with old stories from Stoker to Frankenstein to Friedrich Kittler's Dracula's Legacy. Focusing on seven verbs in Jarmusch's story as key words, this essay examines the record as a medium through the lens of cultural techniques. It understands records as practiced objects that only work in a network, where they assemble (technical) objects, figures, and operations that are dynamically linked. With Kittler, one must finally ask: what do (cinema) love stories have to do with records? 23 januari 2014 Jim Jarmusch Special Jozef van Wissem in Concert - Only Lovers Left Alive Ter gelegenheid van de première van de nieuwe film van Jim Jarmusch: Only Lovers Left Alive, organiseert Filmhuis Den Haag op 7, 8 en 9 februari een speciaal programma rondom deze regisseur. Met twee van zijn eerdere films, plus een bijzonder concert van de componist van de soundtrack van Only Lovers Left Alive: Jozef van Wissem. Concert Jozef van Wissem Op vrijdag 7 februari geeft componist en luitist Jozef van Wissem een concert voorafgaand aan de vertoning van Only Lovers Left Alive. Jozef van Wissem (een in Brooklyn wonende Nederlander) componeerde de soundtrack van deze film en won hiervoor een Gouden Palm op het Filmfestival van Cannes. Van Wissem bracht samen met Jim Jarmusch twee albums uit: Concerning the Entrance into Eternity en The Mystery of Heaven. Hij speelde live met Tilda Swinton en met Zola Jesus, voor wie hij een compositie schreef die in de film te horen is. Tom Hiddleston, de acteur die de rol van Adam speelt, zegt zijn personage voor een deel op Van Wissem gebaseerd te hebben. De muziek van Van Wissem, gespeeld op een zwarte, speciaal voor hem ontworpen barokluit, is intens en bezwerend. Friday sees the opening of the new h-bar for postgraduates and staff TECHNOLOGY Matthew Allinson Reporter Joseph Letts Editor-in-Chief new postgraduate student and staff drinking and social venue on the South Say Hello to the Kensington campus isA set to open this Friday. In keeping Google Nexus 5 27 with the Union’s trend of naming its drinking establishments with incredibly nerdy puns, the new space will be called ħ (pronounced h-bar), named after the reduced NEWS Planck constant, which is the smallest quantum of angular momentum (with a value of 6.582 x 10-16 eV s). There have been some criticisms of the new name, however according to the Union the name was chosen out of a shortlist of names submitted by staff members and postgraduate students. The ħ will be a multi-function space, with a ‘café’ area and a ‘bar’ area. The bar will be run by the Union, whilst food is provided by College’s Boris Johnson under Campus Services division. The bar will be staffed by students with questions 4 previous bar experience, similar to the Old Holland Club and will have several student shift leaders, one of whom will be Stefan Nubert, former Deputy President Finance & Services MUSIC and current Imperial postgraduate JOSEPH LETTS student. Abstract The goal of this thesis is to approach the music that is used by Jim Jarmusch in The Limits of Control (2009), a film he scripted and directed. On the basis of close listening and viewing, selected songs from the soundtrack were read as minoritarian music. Minoritarian music is a term newly introduced in this thesis, and it serves to conceptualise the particular musical expression either created or insterted by Jarmusch into his film. It is an attempt to (re)theorize musical noise and timbre. During the course of the research, significant correlations with the idea of the minor by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari were observed.
