Following a sell-out run in 2017, Albion returns to the Almeida for four weeks only. Joining the previously announced Victoria Hamilton (awarded Best Actress at 2018 Critics’ Circle Awards for this role) and reprising their roles are Nigel Betts, Edyta Budnik, Wil Coban, Margot Leicester, Nicholas Rowe and Helen Schlesinger. They will be joined by Angel Coulby, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Dónal Finn and Geoffrey Freshwater. Mike Bartlett’s plays for the Almeida include his adaptation of Maxim Gorky’s Vassa, Game and the multi-award winning King Charles III (Olivier Award for Best New Play) which premiered at the Almeida before West End and Broadway transfers, a UK and international tour. His television adaptation of the play was broadcast on BBC Two in 2017. Born in his grandfather's rectory in Columbus, Mississippi, Williams and his family later moved to St. Louis. There Williams endured many bad years caused by her father's abuse and her own anguish over her introverted sister, who was later permanently institutionalized. Williams attended the University of Missouri, and, after time working for a footwear company and for his own mental breakdown, also attended Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Iowa, from which he graduated in 1938. Williams began writing plays in 1935. During 1943 he spent six months as a contract screenwriter for MGM, but only produced one script, The Gentleman Caller. When MGM rejected it, Williams made it his first major hit, The Glass Menagerie (1945). In this intensely autobiographical play, Williams dramatizes the story of Amanda, who dreams of restoring her lost past by finding a calling knight for her daughter, and Amanda's son, Tom, who yearns to escape the responsibility of supporting her mother and sister. After The Glass Menagerie, Williams wrote his masterpiece, A Streetcar Named Desire, (1947), along with a steady stream of other works, including major works such as Summer and Smoke (1948), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1954), and Suddenly Last Summer (1958). His works celebrate the fugitive type, the sensitive marginalized who seized the status of outsider allows them to perceive the horror of the world and often give additional testimony to this horror by becoming their victims. -

It is by imagination that we can form any conception of what are his sensations.1 —Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments The Vices and Virtues are written in a language the World cannot construe; it reads them in a vile translation, and the translators are FAILURE and SUCCESSl2 —Alfred Evelyn, Money, (V, III) Theatre students are frequently instructed that the vigorous and energetic theatrical world of the nineteenth century produced little drama of lasting significance prior to Henrik Ibsen's social problem plays. Most Victorian theatre was overly sentimental and melodramatic, as the cliche goes; quaint and colorful perhaps, but finally too simplistic and flatly-dimensioned for sophisticated audiences at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The era, it seems, applied its repressions too fiercely for dramatists to delve below the surface of human experience, hindering serious questioning of prevailing values. The naive moralizing and stereotypical characters of this period made for a barren dramatic age. The condescension directed at nineteenth century drama also results from another presumed hindrance. These supposedly unwatchable plays are often multi- scene works requiring large casts and are, as such, too daunting in scope for even the most adventurous of directors and producing organizations. Published scripts of many nineteenth century plays can be difficult (if not impossible) to locate; James Fisher, Professor of Theater at Wabash College, has authored five books, including The Theater of Tony Kushner: Living Past Hope (NY: Routledge, 2001), and has published articles and reviews in numerous periodicals. -

Biography JACK DAVENPORT - Steve Although he comes from a family steeped in acting - his mother is the acclaimed actress Maria Aitken, his father Nigel Davenport - Jack decided to study Film and English at the University of East Anglia. He acted professionally, briefly, before he went to University, with Theatre Clwyd. “I dithered about whether to carry on or go to University and do something else for a while.” On graduating he was given a tiny part in FIERCE CREATURES, “which quite frankly a potato could have done just as well” and then he was offered the role of ‘Miles’ in two series of the cult television drama THIS LIFE. He was in the feature film THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY opposite Hollywood heavy-weights Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Philip Seymour Hoffman, which opened in cinemas across the UK as the first series of COUPLING was in production. Other television credits include: THE ASYLUM; THE WYVERN MYSTERY (BBC); ULTRAVIOLET (C4); THE MOTH (Tyne Tees) and Michael Bogdanov’s MACBETH (Granada).
