Happy Creepy Halloween Start your Halloween celebration early with special Halloween-themed activities. Pumpkins will fly during this annual outdoor event featuring our friends from UC Berkeley’s Pioneers in Engineering (PiE) program. Watch as a giant trebuchet sends pumpkins flying across the sky and learn about the engineering behind this fun and messy 10/27, 11am - 3pm demonstration. Green Tour of the EcoCenter at Heron’s Head Park

EXPLORER TOUR Come explore the EcoCenter at Heron’s Head Park and learn how solar panels, a living roof, and other green technologies make this facility a functioning example of sustainable solutions. Precision Physics in Search of the Dark Sector The so-called “fine-structure constant” is a deeply important number in nature. It describes the strength of the electromagnetic force between fundamental particles. My Journey to Science UCSF professor Saul Villeda will share his path to science – from growing up in Southern CA the son of Guatemalan immigrants to his current research. His lab studies how the effects of aging can be reversed and uses a technique that surgically connects young and old mice to ask: is there something in young blood that can reverse aging? Is there something in old blood that can promote aging? Participants will also learn about Dr. Villeda’s research through hands-on activities led by UCSF volunteers. Searching for Dark Matter What is dark matter? For decades, firm astronomical evidence from observations of stars and galaxies has indicated that most of the matter in the universe cannot be seen directly with telescopes.
