At the foot of the mountains the small town of Berlevaag looks like a child’s toy‐town of little wooden pieces painted gray, yellow, pink and many other colors. Sixty‐five years ago two elderly ladies lived in one of the yellow houses. Other ladies at that time wore a bustle, and the two sisters might have worn it as gracefully as any of them, for they were tall and willowy. But they had never possessed any article of fashion; they had dressed demurely in gray or black all their lives. They were christened Martine and Philippa, after Martin Luther and his friend Philip Melanchton. Their father had been a Dean and a prophet, the founder of a pious ecclesiastic party or sect, which was known and looked up to in all the country of Norway. Its members renounced the pleasures of [2] this world, for the earth and all that it held to them was but a kind of illusion, and the true reality was the New Jerusalem toward which they were longing. They swore not at all, but their communication was yea yea and nay nay, and they called one another Brother and Sister. The Dean had married late in life and by now had long been dead. -

It seems barely an exaggeration to say that Arab and Muslim Americans are constantly talked about but almost never heard from. The problem is not that they lack representations but that they have too many. And these are all abstractions. Arabs and Muslims have become a foreign-policy issue, an argument on the domestic agenda, a law-enforcement priority, and a point of well-meaning concern. They appear as shadowy characters on terror television shows, have become objects of sociological inquiry, and get paraded around as puppets for public diplomacy…They are floating everywhere in the virtual landscape of the national imagination, as either villains of Islam or victims of Arab culture. — Moustafa Bayoumi, How Does it Feel to be a Problem1 36 Waleed F. INTRODUCTION Popular culture in the United States functions through sensational and rating based entertainment. It also promotes a hegemonic frame of reference for cultural citizenship and national belonging in the life of "cultural citizens.'" It serves as an ideological state apparatus, to echo French philosopher Louis Althusser, guiding citizens through an acculturation process that homogenizes their own subjectivity.' In this sense, this article defines cultural citizenship as a tool to sUbjectify minorities through the mediation of popular culture.4 In his scholarly reviews of Hollywood's history, Lary May emphasizes the cinema's role in enunciating cultural citizenship. Hollywood, he argues, has been a site of fury for debates around "good citizenship" because of its connection to "political power, cultural authority, and the very meaning of national identity."5 For decades, Hollywood has played a major role in Circulating a popular sense of American collective imagination and manufacturing sensational conceptions of cultural Otherness. -

The novel’s reincarnations in various cultural forms consistently privilege the Anna-Vronskii story line over the parallel narrative of Kitty and Levin, thus “liberating” the adultery myth from its novelistic shackles. This remarkable diffusion and myth-oriented interpretation of Anna Karenina largely stems from the cinema’s fascination with the novel. The freedom with which filmmakers handle the allegedly well-known novel reveals the discrepancy between the literary text and its idea in the collective unconscious. This freedom also indicates that in popular awareness visual embodiments of Anna Karenina have become more authoritative than the novel itself. While shedding light on dramatic changes that have occurred in the “collective” idea of Tolstoi’s novel, cinema—as a medium aiming at a mass audience—also manifests its essential connection with a myth of love that is stronger than death.
