This will be a big win for sports fan as although they can access live and on-demand NBC and NBCSN content through a live TV provider’s app on Android TV devices, the dedicated app is a different proposition altogether. The app not only provides a central place to find all the NBC-related sports content but it also offers more content than you’ll find going through a traditional live TV provider’s app. This also goes for greater access to more live TV content in general. Possibly more importantly, the app also populates NBC Sports Gold content as well. NBC Sports Gold is different to typical NBC content as it requires a standalone subscription. Therefore although you can access NBC content through your live TV service on Android TV, that’s not the same as accessing NBC Sports Gold content. In addition to the NBC-branded channels, you’ll also get access to the Golf Channel , Olympic Channel , and Telemundo Deportes from within the new app. This app will essentially now service all of your NBC sports needs without device owners having to switch from app to app. It is a true one-stop solution for the network’s sports content and that’s big news for sports fans in the U.S. Not only is the one-stop nature interesting as it offers fuller access to all the sports content, but equally, the same app caters to different subscribers. If you don’t subscribe to the standalone NBC Sports Gold service, or any of its related passes, nor have access to NBC content in general, then this app is unlikely to hold much weight for you. There is some content that’s accessible without the need for either an NBC or Sports Gold subscription, but it is largely short clip-based highlights. To download the NBC Sports app, either search for it in the Google Play Store app on the Android TV device or send the app directly to your device from the web version of the Google Play Store (link).     SEPTEMBER 2019 KEY CONSUMER TECH TRENDS FOR ENTERTAINMENT INTRODUCTION The Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, producers of CES®, recently updated its semi-annual U.S. Consumer Sales and Forecasts Report, projecting trends into 2020. Variety Intelligence Platform, a new division of Variety, has highlighted key areas within the report that we think are the most relevant for the entertainment industry as it gears up to enter the next decade. Entertainment finds itself in the midst of digital disruption, which will be amplified once 5G internet begins to hit the mainstream. The trends included here illustrate shifts that are not only changing the consumption of entertainment, but also creating new distribution channels and devices to engage with content. Older systems are being replaced by younger ones more suited to the new environment, but some previous generation systems are still surviving, even if on the decline. Others, like video games, have reinvented themselves and are generating more revenue than ever before. Sports over-the-top (OTT) provisions have seen to be a profitable area to be a player in with OTT media revenue expected to reach 158.84 billion dollars by 2024, more than double the $67.8 billion generated in 2018. OTT growth is second only to virtual reality in the media industry. However, it is not without its challenges - whilst there are many opportunities arising in this arena, especially due to the current pandemic and the increase in content consumption this has led to, there is the overhanging question of whether this market is a positive one to be part of or if it is the offering too broad with too many subscriptions for the consumer? Will this lead to a consolidation in the market much like the cable industry of yesteryear? OTT platforms have shown positive traits, Caelum Shove said as an example on Medium ‘NBC Sports Gold… focus on functional benefits relevant only to niche sports fans. Not only is this a messaging shift, but also an organizational one. In many cases, subscription sports streaming is the first time these networks have moved into the direct-to-consumer world, forcing the firms to shift priorities, hire new departments, and build new organizational muscles’. This suggests that OTT platforms are not only delivering that extra content for fans but are also providing a boost to the economy through new jobs and revenue streams. Despite this, the proliferation of OTT platforms creates a sports battle for audiences with lead runners being the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Hulu, DAZN, NBC, Discovery and Eleven Sports.
